Martin Freeman, 52, Addresses Backlash Over Sex Scene With Jenna Ortega, 21, In 'Miller's Girl'

There's 31-year age gap between Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega.

Martin Freeman, 52, has responded to the backlash his latest film, 'Miller's Girl', received over his 31-year age gap with his co-star Jenna Ortega, 21. In the movie, which was released in cinemas earlier this year, Jenna Ortega as an 18-year-old student develops an inappropriate relationship with her writing teacher, played by Martin Freeman. The film received criticism before and after its release over one particular scene, which saw the two stars engaging in a sexual act. At the time, social media users expressed disgust over the actors' stark 31-year age gap and called the lead actors' relationship in the movie "disturbing".

Now, months later, Martin Freeman has responded to the strong online reaction. In an interview with The Times, the 52-year-old called the movie "grown-up and nuanced", noting that any discomfort derived from the 31-year age gap between the two was entirely the point. "It's not saying, 'Isn't this great?'" the actor explained, adding that it's "a shame" how stories about complex dynamics can often be misunderstood.

In the interview, 'The Hobbit' actor also brought up actor Liam Neeson in Steven Spielberg's Holocaust drama 'Schindler's List' as an example of how an actor can play a role without co-signing the film's topic. "Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?" he questioned.

Meanwhile, after its release, the movie's intimacy coordinator Kristina Arjona said that 52-year-old and 21-year-old were never placed in unsafe situations while filming film. According to The Independent, Ms Arjona assured viewers that Ortega was "comfortable" and "very sure" of her sex scenes.

"There [were] many, many people throughout this [filming] process, engaging with [Jenna] to make sure that it was consistent with what she was comfortable with, and she was very determined and very sure of what she wanted to do," she said.

"Part of my job too is supporting her decisions," she continued. "I adapt to whatever is the comfort level of my actors, especially on a production like this where there is a large age gap between the actors," Ms Arjona added.

According to the film's synopsis, Miller's Girl follows the story of "a talented young writer (Jenna Ortega) who embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Martin Freeman) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As lines blur and their lives intertwine, Professor and protege must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear".

Victoria Justice Talks About Her First Sex Scene - Yahoo Entertainment

Victoria Justice won’t forget her first day on the job.

The former Victorious star talked about shooting her first sex scene in the upcoming crime drama Depravity while visiting SiriusXM Hits 1 LA with Tony Fly and Symon. She was visiting the show to promote her new single, RAW.

More from Deadline

“My first day on set though, I had my first ever sex scene, which was like, I’m like, ‘Really guys? We’re gonna schedule this for the first day? Cool. Thanks for that,’” Justice recalled.

Justice said the scene was not a pleasant experience. “It is uncomfortable,” she said. “I was really nervous. I was actually very, very nervous about it, and totally anxious about the entire situation and I was like, ‘Did I make the wrong choice? I don’t know if I should do this.’”

Justice said a talk with the director eased her worries.

”I had a lot of faith and trust in our director, Paul Tamasy, and he made me feel very comfortable about it and he was like, ‘Listen, I’ll show it to you beforehand. If you don’t like it, we’ll change it, whatever,’” she said. “I think sometimes people think like filming sex scenes or anything like an intimate scene that it’s like really sexy… [but] there’s a bunch of random dudes in the room breathing and watching you.”

The actress added that her scene partner also helped minimize any discomfort. “The actor I was working with, we were friends and well, friends as much as we could be,” she said. “We barely knew each other because it was the first day of filming. But he was a super nice guy and made me feel very safe and was very polite and respectful, so it went well and it’s very tasteful, and yeah. It’s good.”

Victoria Justice Says Shooting First Sex Scene Was 'Uncomfortable' - PEOPLE

Victoria Justice is opening up about her experience filming a sex scene for the first time in her career.

On a recent episode of SiriusXM’s Hits 1 LA with Tony Fly and Symon, the former Nickelodeon star, 31, revealed that she shot her "first ever sex scene" on day one of filming Depravity, which is screenwriter Paul Tamasy's directorial debut.

"I'm like, 'Really guys, we're going to schedule this for the first day? Cool. Thanks for that,' " Justice recalled of her reaction to learning that the intimate scene would be one of the first scenes shot for the movie.

Asked about the realities of filming an intimate scene, the Victorious alum admitted: "It is uncomfortable. I was really nervous. I was actually very nervous about it and totally anxious about the entire situation. And I was like, 'Did I make the wrong choice? I don't know if I should do this.' "

Ultimately, Justice said she had "faith and trust" in Tamasy, 60, who put her at ease. He showed her what he was thinking for the scene, making it clear that they could make changes if she didn't like the plan.

"I think sometimes people think filming sex scenes or like an intimate scene — that it's like really sexy," she continued. "It's really not. It's uncomfortable honestly. And there's like a bunch of random dudes in the room like breathing and watching you."

She didn't name the actor she filmed the sex scene with, but said they were "friends" as much as two actors who "barely knew each other" could be on day one of filming the movie.

"He was a super nice guy and made me feel very safe and was very polite and respectful," Justice said, adding that the filming process "went well" and the scene is "tasteful."

Tamasy — who is known for penning scripts of David O. Russell films like 2010's The Fighter starring Amy Adams, Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale — also wrote the script for Depravity.

Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney are two of Justice's costars in the upcoming crime drama, which centers on a group of tenants who think their neighbor is a serial killer and become involved in a heist when they begin an investigation, per Variety.

AR-15 rifle recovered from scene where 4 law enforcement officers killed in Charlotte: Police - ABC News

Authorities recovered an AR-15 rifle and .40-caliber handgun from the scene where four law enforcement officers were fatally shot while attempting to serve warrants at a residence in Charlotte, North Carolina, police said.

Additional magazines and ammunition for both firearms were also recovered from the scene, where there are believed to have been more than 100 projectiles and casings, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings.

"I can't tell you how much I'm grateful for these officers and their heroic act," Jennings said during a press briefing on Tuesday. "To me that's truly heroic -- when you hear the gunshots and the rapid fire and they're running directly into it because they know that there are people that need help."

The law enforcement officials were shot and killed as they attempted to serve two warrants in Charlotte on Monday, city officials said. Four other officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident.

A man, later identified by authorities as Terry Clark Hughes Jr., 39, allegedly began firing at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, striking multiple officers, police said. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force had been serving active felony warrants for possession of a firearm by a felon and felony flee to elude.

The responding officers were "immediately met with gunfire," Jennings said. The shooter was firing from an upper level in the residence and had an "advantage" over them, Jennings said.

Investigators are looking into how Hughes acquired the guns and whether other shooters were involved, Jennings said Tuesday. A teenager and a woman who were in the home at the time are cooperating in the investigation, he said.

"We feel like we have everyone involved that was at the house that we need to speak with," Jennings said.

Twelve Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers fired their service weapon during the incident and have been placed on administrative leave, per protocol, amid an investigation into the shooting, the chief said.

The four law enforcement personnel killed in the incident were identified as Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks Jr., 48; North Carolina Department of Adult Correction veterans Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott; and CMPD officer Joshua Eyer.

"It's very tough to know that there are families that are hurting right now," Jennings said Tuesday, crying. "We'll get through it though."

The four CMPD officers who were also injured in the incident were identified Tuesday as Christopher Tolley, Michael Giglio and Jack Blowers, who were shot, and Justin Campbell, who suffered a broken foot, police said. Tolley remains hospitalized in stable condition and the others have since been released, police said.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper thanked the officers who responded for their "bravery and courage."

"The investigation into this tragic, brutal, deadly attack will result in more answers that we don't know today," North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said at Tuesday's press briefing. "I expect it to find those answers and to help bring to justice people for these needless deaths of these brave officers."

Mayor Vi Lyles acknowledged the health care providers who "did all that was possible."

"To the four families who gave that ultimate sacrifice -- we see you," she said at Tuesday's briefing. "Today we say our prayers as we get through this difficult time."

George Dunlap, chairman of the county commissioners board, issued a statement calling the shooting a "senseless and preventable" tragedy.

The community feels "the shock and the pain" of Monday's shooting, added Dena Diorio, Mecklenburg's county manager.

"We stand ready to support our law enforcement colleagues and their families in any way we can as we all work through this heartbreaking situation," she said on social media.

Dr. Raynard Washington, the county's health director, said he was "praying and sending light & support to the families trying to make sense of this disaster" in a statement on social media.

"We should all be tired of our guns in the wrong hands problem. Here's to hope," he said.

Martin Freeman addresses controversial x-rated scene with Jenna Ortega after backlash for age-gap movie - UNILAD

Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega star in Miller's Girl but the film got backlash for their age-gap

Martin Freeman has spoken out on his recent movie, Miller's Girl, addressing the controversial age gap which riled some fans.

The film ruffled feathers when its first trailer dropped at the back end of last year, with fans seeing a very different side to Wednesday star, Jenna Ortega, 21.

In the movie - which landed on Netflix last week - Ortega stars as 18-year-old student Cairo Sweet, with The Hobbit favorite Martin Freeman starring at her college teacher, Jonathan Miller.

It's short and simple synopsis reads: "A creative writing assignment yields complex results between a teacher and his talented student."

As you can imagine, the R-rated movie is pretty steamy - something which caused a bit of a stir in light of there being a 31-year age gap between Ortega and Freeman, 52.

While only 21, Ortega has been in a series of movies and TV shows already, so she's no stranger to how the film industry works - something which was backed up by the intimacy coordinator on set of Miller's Girl.

In fact, Kristina Arjona said that Ortega was 'very determined and very sure of what she wanted to do' in the film's sex scenes.

In the wake of the movie not going down too well with critics, with some of the negativity coming down to them feeling uncomfortable about Ortega and Freeman's age gap, Freeman has now defended the film.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, the 52-year-old described Miller's Girl as 'grown-up and nuanced'.

Noting his age gap with his co-star, Freeman went on: "It's not saying, 'Isn't this great?' Are we going to have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?"

At the time of writing, Miller's Girl has just 29 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer.

One reviewer labelled Ortega and Freeman as being 'ill-matched'.

"The hot-for-teacher drama backfires as it gets icky rather quickly when the repartee turns farcical," they wrote. "Good cast, and beautifully shot, but never able to rise above the ill-matched Freeman-Ortega combo."

Other viewers have echoed similar sentiments.

“NO, NO, NO, NO, NO! Jenny Ortega, how dare you act such a scene. That's it, You are grounded, grounded, grounded, grounded, grounded, grounded, grounded until the next season of Netflix Wednesday Series,” one frustrated fan wrote.

Another commented: "An erotic thriller starring Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega lol like what were people expecting."

Good or bad, Miller's Girl has sure got people talking.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Deleted Scene Features Critical Secret Invasion Easter Egg - IGN

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Marvel's Secret Invasion series.

Don Cheadle's Col. James Rhodes is certainly in a very interesting place following the events of 2023's Secret Invasion. The final episode revealed that Rhodes, who had traded in his armor for a new position as Secretary of Defense, was replaced by a Skrull impostor. Based on a new deleted scene from 2021's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it would seem Marvel was laying the groundwork for that twist even earlier in Phase 4.

IGN can exclusively reveal this deleted scene from the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is titled "Flight Lesson" and will be featured as one of the exclusive extras on the series' 4K UHD and Blu-ray release. You can see it embedded below or in the video player above:

Reuniting The Falcon and War Machine

This scene takes place early in Episode 1, shortly after Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson gives his speech at a ceremony where Captain America's shield is being put on display at a museum. At this stage, Sam is still very dubious about Steve Rogers' request that he take up the Captain America mantle.

While it's not hard to understand why Marvel might have cut this scene for pacing concerns, it does offer a valuable glimpse at the warm but slightly awkward friendship between the two former Avengers. Sam and Rhdoey found themselves on opposite sides of the conflict in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. And there's the little matter of Sam being partly responsible for Rhodey's paralyzing injury during the film's airport battle.

We can see from this scene that Rhodey doesn't harbor any ill will toward Sam for that incident. Moreover, he seems to have more or less fully recovered, referencing a new procedure that healed his shattered spine and restored his ability to walk. There's just one problem here - based on how Secret Invasion ends, we know this isn't the real Rhodey.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: 10 Comics Stories You Should Read

When Was Rhodey Replaced?

In Secret Invasion, we learn that Gravik's faction of Skrulls has been kidnapping key political and military figures and replacing them with Skrull sleeper agents. Rhodey turns out to be the most significant Skrull impostor (that we know about), one who nearly succeeds in triggering Gravik's plan of wiping out humanity in a nuclear holocaust and leaving Earth ripe for a Skrull takeover.

The real Rhodey is rescued from captivity at the end of the series. As he's escorted to safety, we can see that this Rhodey is still struggling to walk under his own power, a clue that he's been a prisoner of the Skrulls for quite a while. We know that he was taken at some point between the airport battle in 2016 and when he was supposedly healed after the events of Avengers: Endgame in 2023.

This deleted scene suggests that the Skrull Rhodey has been in play since at least the beginning of Phase 4. It would seem that there was never any procedure that fixed Rhodey's spine. Instead, it was merely a cover story to explain why his impostor didn't need to rely on the Tony Stark-designed leg braces. At a minimum, this means Rhodey was a Skrull prisoner for at least two years.

We still don't know exactly when Rhodey was replaced, however. Which version of the character were we seeing in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame? Did the Skrulls use the chaos of Thanos' Snap as a smokescreen to secretly kidnap Rhodey? Was it a Skrull who helped defend the planet from Thanos' final attack in Endgame? Was the real Rhodey robbed of his chance to say goodbye to Tony?

If we're ever going to get hard answers to those questions, we assume it'll come in the upcoming Armor Wars movie, which deals with Rhodey resuming active duty as War Machine and fighting to prevent Tony's weapons from falling into the wrong hands. Armor Wars was originally announced as a Disney+ series, but in 2022 we learned it's being reworked to become a theatrical film. The movie may be as much about Rhodey's struggle to reintegrate into a post-Blip MCU as it is the war over Stark Tech.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Season 1 is available on 4K UHD and Blu-ray now.

For more on the current state of the MCU, find out why Hugh Jackman's Wolverine may be the new Loki and brush up on every Marvel movie and series in development.
