Giants' Jihad Ward miffed by 'Hard Knocks' portrayal of Aaron Rodgers interaction - ESPN - ESPN

New York Giants defensive end Jihad Ward did not like the way his interaction with New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was portrayed on "Hard Knocks," saying his actions stemmed from disgust with an illegal block by Jets wide receiver Randall Cobb that left Giants safety Bobby McCain concussed, and the Jets' overall reaction to the situation.

"Hard Knocks" showed the Jets players laughing in the huddle after Rodgers called out Cobb for the blindside block.

"Everybody going to get pissed off at that. The whole team was pissed off, you know what I'm saying?" Ward said. "It's preseason and all that stuff and you're going to do some reaction like that?

"It's cool, though. That's how they roll. I think we play them soon, it is what it is."

This sets the stage for the crosstown rivalry to heat up once again. It hasn't been the same since Rex Ryan and the Jets tried to seize the city more than a decade ago.

The Giants and Jets meet again on Oct. 29 at MetLife Stadium. It's the team with all the preseason hype, the Jets, playing against the team that made the playoffs last season but has somehow flown under the local radar this summer.

"They know what they did. I know what [Cobb] did, coaches know what he did, my teammates know what he did," Ward said. "I'm the only one sticking up for [McCain]."

McCain was in the concussion protocol this week.

Ward waited to speak until Wednesday afternoon after practice. Following Friday night's preseason game, he politely declined to get into specifics about his interactions with Rodgers.

He wanted to see what Rodgers said first.

"I kind of bumped him, too. Wait for 'Hard Knocks,'" Rodgers said after the game. "Some good content."

Ward gave Rodgers a light push at the end of a play in the first quarter on the drive after the Cobb block. The two could be seen chirping face-to-face. After Rodgers threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson on the very next play, the two had words once again.

"Hard Knocks" on Tuesday night showed clips of Rodgers telling Ward that he didn't even know who he was. After Rodgers' touchdown pass they showed him yelling, among other things, "Don't poke the bear!"

Ward is entering his eighth professional season and played significant snaps last season when the Giants beat Rodgers and his former team, the Green Bay Packers, in London. He didn't seem to appreciate the way the scene was cut for the TV show.

"See, the thing is, they're going to entertain. They're going to show his part -- HBO, whatever stuff is going on, 'Hard Knocks.' They're going to show his part. They weren't even in the whole scenario of what really went down. They're going to show his side of the story. ... It's all about Aaron Rodgers at the [end] of the day. They sign him, it is what it is. They're going to show his part and make me look like a sucker. But I ain't going for that."

What's Ward's side of the story?

"My side of the story is I'm not going to let none of my teammates be backed down like that," he said. "I'm going to ride for my teammates."

Rodgers was seen on "Hard Knocks" getting on Cobb for the illegal block, which sent McClain flying and earned the Jets a 15-yard penalty. He immediately knew it wasn't good.

"I couldn't believe it. I've been around Randall Cobb forever. We talk about smart players and doing smart things on the field. I don't know what was in that. I was watching that in slow motion going, 'No, no, no Cobby, what are you doing?'" Rodgers said after the game. "We were laughing because that wasn't a penalty when we started playing. It has been a penalty for a while. So, not the smartest play.

"I said, 'Bro, you've got a third kid on the way. You just took money out of your pocket. You're going to have to buy [your wife] Aiyda something nice for that.'"

Cobb's wife Aiyda was shown on "Hard Knocks" telling her two young children that daddy was likely to get fined for his actions on the play. It's expected that Cobb finds out later in the week the amount of the fine.

A night in Worcester: Once a scene with clubs, now it's bars and baseball - GBH News

What’s your go-to late night activity? Do you like meeting up with friends at a bar and playing pool? Or dancing at a club? Maybe both?

This summer, we’ve been reporting on nightlife in collaboration with Axios Boston. We’ve asked bar-hoppers and dancers what they look for in a night scene and what could be better.

For this story, we’re taking those questions to New England’s second largest city: Worcester. It continues to grow and become a more attractive place for people looking to escape the high costs of housing in Boston. But is its night scene up to snuff?

Several Worcester State University students think so.

“I don’t think Worcester lacks anything. It has everything I need,” Sydney Vautour said as she and some friends bar-hopped and sang karaoke around the city’s Canal District.

Related Stories

“There’s always people out, especially when all the colleges are [in session],” Meghan Walsh added.

Nearby, several bars and restaurants were full of folks drinking, eating and listening to live music. Thousands more people were down the street singing “Sweet Caroline” at a Worcester Red Sox — or “WooSox” — game at Polar Park, the new minor league baseball stadium in the area.

As they left the game, Grace Graham and Andy Schutzman — a couple — noted they live in Berlin and Lowell, respectively. They said Worcester is a fun place for them to meet.

“When we come out here, we’ll go to dinner, get drinks, go to the game. And then if you want to go out afterwards, you can,” Graham said.

Still, not everyone agrees that Worcester suits both dancers and bar-lovers.

Tommy Lee has owned Mai Tai Sushi and Bar for 11 years. He loves the Canal District but says several years ago, the area used to be even busier. Nightlife boomed every week from Thursday to Sunday, he said.

Then during the pandemic, as Lee struggled to keep Mai Tai afloat, a lot of places around him closed permanently, including some of the city’s only nightclubs. Although business in the neighborhood has picked up since then, Lee says the baseball stadium and new luxury housing complexes nearby have made real estate around the Canal District more valuable.

Artist Bruja The Villain has lived in Worcester for decades. All of the clubs Bruja used to love have closed.

As a result, commercial rents have increased, which has made it harder for nightclubs to come back. Without more clubs, there are few opportunities to dance.

“So a lot of regulars that come [to my restaurant], they’ll have some food and some drinks, and they'll go down to Boston to a club, or they'll go down to Providence for a club,” Lee said, noting they'll rely on designated drivers or the commuter rail as transportation options. “A lot of people like to dance.”

That includes local artist Bruja The Villain, who’s lived in Worcester for decades and remembers dressing up and dancing at different clubs with friends.

“[There was] Sh-Booms, Clubland, the Royale,” Bruja said. “Everybody would squeeze their bodies into the Royale. The Royale was dope.”

Bruja joked that they and their friends were the cool girls “everyone wanted to know.” So they’d often arrive at clubs at around 1 a.m. and dance for just a half-hour to make their presence felt before heading home.

A man smiles at the camera

“We used to have so much fun,” Bruja said.

The clubs may be gone now, but there are people trying to fill the void. Bruja brought me to an all-white party at a music lounge, bumping with hip-hop. Paul Hernandez — a real estate agent by day, entertainer at night — hosts these types of events open to anyone once a month.

His goal? Bring a little Miami to Worcester.

“I just really like people having a good time and making sure that they feel the vibe,” Hernandez said. “For me, nightlife is dancing.”

Other people don’t mind the absence of nightclubs as much. They say they’re happy bar-hopping and attending baseball games in the Canal District. They note that new bars have been able to afford opening in the area, including Femme — one of only 29 lesbian bars across the U.S. and the only one in Massachusetts, according to the Lesbian Bar Project.

For me, I like to dance, but my moves aren’t very good. So maybe the lack of bars in Worcester is a good thing? There’s less of a chance I’ll embarrass myself trying to dance.

Braves' Ronald Acuña Jr knocked over in wild scene at Coors Field as security wrestles fans wanting hug - Fox News

Two fans rushed the outfield at Coors Field on Monday night to hug Atlanta Braves star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr, which resulted in the All-Star falling to the grass after security tried to break things up.

It was a wild scene when one fan made his way to Acuña, who didn’t seem to be too alarmed at the situation.

While the fan had his phone out, presumably trying to take a picture with Acuña, a security guard rushed in and grabbed the fan, who wouldn’t let go of the outfielder.

Another security guard tried to help by bending down to grab the fan’s legs, but the fan simply would not let go of Acuña.

That’s when another fan ran onto the field to do the exact same, and things went awry.

The second fan’s arrival caused more security guards to get involved, which ultimately led to Acuña hitting the deck after tripping over one of the security guards on the ground behind him.

Luckily, the star player was not injured in the incident.

The Braves’ bullpen catcher and other players on the field ran over to check on their teammate as security apprehended the fans.

While they were being detained, Acuña appeared to speak to one of them, but it's not clear if he was angry or not.

The second fan was also barking something at the outfielder and he was putting up a fight as multiple security guards wrestled him off the field.

Acuña had himself quite the game at Coors Field in the 14-4 win against the Colorado Rockies. He finished 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run, four runs scored and five RBIs – three of which came on a bases-loaded double in the top of the ninth inning.

Acuña is on an MVP tear this season, hitting .335 with a .990 OPS, 30 homers and 81 RBIs. The Braves, who hold the best record in the MLB, entered Monday's game against the Rockies 84-45 with a 12-game lead in the NL East.

After national acclaim over the past decade, where is Pittsburgh's food scene headed? - TribLIVE

The attention the Pittsburgh food scene received several years ago might have been a mirage.

Starting in 2013, national food publications started to notice the Steel City and included Pittsburgh in several rankings for top “foodie” cities. By 2015, nationally renowned restaurant ranker Zagat named Pittsburgh the best food city in the nation.

While the region’s food scene had made leaps and bounds from its economic nadir following the collapse of the steel industry, part of the reason Zagat chose Pittsburgh was that it was poised “for even more exciting things in 2016.”

Instead, the scene settled in from there. Some restaurants made a splash and are still wowing diners, while others didn’t have much staying power.

Bon Appetit magazine made 11 recommendations about Pittsburgh in 2013. Six of them closed, and most before the pandemic. Most of Zagat’s 2015 recommended restaurants remain, but Chaz & Odette closed in 2017 and Whitfield at the Ace Hotel — described as “perhaps the most robust symbol of Pittsburgh’s ascent” — never returned after the pandemic.

Most notably, controversial chef Kevin Sousa repeatedly started new endeavors during this era, receiving headlines and praise claiming his food could revive struggling towns like Braddock. But all of Sousa’s well-publicized restaurants closed and then Sousa decamped for New Mexico.

To some local chefs, like Jamilka Borges, it showed that the Pittsburgh food scene had improved, which deserved some attention — just maybe not as much as was being advertised.

Local restaurants started to offer more inventive menus, deliver more ethnic food options and use mostly local ingredients, but Pittsburgh was still far away from competing with food city goliaths such as Los Angeles and New York City.

“I have always said that all that attention in 2013 was definitely a little premature,” said Borges, who is opening a new restaurant called Lilith in Shadyside soon. “It feels like every freaking year there is a small city that gets the same attention. Media plays a bit of a role — it is cool to have a small city and a good story to tell.”

But 10 years on, is Pittsburgh’s food scene still in the same place?

Borges said the scene is finally coming into its own. She said organic demand for inventive, high-quality food is showing up at pop-ups that are packed with people, and those pop-ups are growing into full-service restaurants.

The industry also is adjusting as it comes out of the pandemic, with persistent staff shortages and demand for take-away meals, but local restaurateurs say the desire for gourmet to-go meals is still there.

And while the 2010s saw some foodie false starts, the current food scene has experienced a true explosion of authentic Asian restaurants that doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

“We have a lot of places that are doing a great job. I feel excited,” Borges said. “We are never gonna be New York or San Francisco, and that is OK. We don’t need to compare ourselves to them.”

Executive chef Jamilka Borges (left) and pastry chef Dianne DeStefano are preparing to open their restaurant, Lilith, on Spahr Street in Shadyside.

Evolving tastes

Popular regional chains are still king in the Pittsburgh food scene. Even through all the national accolades for independent Pittsburgh restaurants, it’s still the chains that are winning readers’ choice awards and filling seats.

The growth of locations for restaurants like Condado and Burgatory are testament to that, Borges said. She also noted the pandemic shifted priorities for diners, and that chains with their consistent menus and quick service took priority over full-service dining. She cited the closing of upscale pizzeria Dinette in East Liberty, which was replaced in 2021 by fast-casual chain Piada Italian Street Food.

That doesn’t mean chains should be looked down upon, said Borges, especially during an era when indoor dining came with risks of catching covid. And even though Borges wants diners to come to smaller, independent restaurants that she has worked in, she recognizes the appeal of the successful chain.

“Regional concepts and chains, they are doing something consistent — the majority of people are going to love that,” she said. “I completely understand.”

But Borges said a growing culinary scene is competing with popular chains as the city emerges from the pandemic, and it’s building a self-sustaining clientele that might finally be living up to the hype Pittsburgh received several years ago.

She said young chefs are holding pop-up dinners at restaurants when they are closed on Mondays, and these events typically are packed with patrons.

Some of these pop-ups have become so successful that chefs have been able to leverage them into full-fledged restaurants of their own, like Scandinavian-inspired fet-fisk, which plans to open in Bloomfield at the former Lombardozzi space.

She mentioned that Dish Osteria, the popular Italian restaurant in the South Side, returned from a pandemic-era absence and has been met with much fanfare.

“The places that are doing full service in a somewhat upscale, somewhat casual atmosphere, like Dish Osteria, are packed every night,” Borges said.

Borges also notes that some critically acclaimed mainstays born in the 2010s, like Justin Severino’s Morcilla and Kate Lasky and Tomasz Skowronski’s Apteka, continue to earn national award nominations and are pushing the food scene forward.

She said a difference between the food scene now and 10 years ago is the clientele: Ten years ago, the city didn’t quite have the population of foodies to sustain the growth in restaurants it was seeing. Now, with the growth in the tech industry and locals’ evolving tastes, Borges feels differently.

For her own restaurant, Lilith, which is taking over the former Cafe Zinho location in Shadyside, Borges said she believes diners are ready to embrace the burgeoning food scene more robustly this go-round.

Borges hails from Puerto Rico and is partnering with Dianne DeStefano to open Lilith. She said the farm-to-table restaurant will combine Puerto Rican fare with Sicilian flavors and will have a strong focus on full service.

“We want to go back to a place that you feel taken care of 100%, without being pretentious or fine dining,” Borges said.

Pandemic shifts

Like every city in the nation, the pandemic took a wrecking ball to Pittsburgh’s food scene. Trends changed, chefs adjusted and a lot of restaurants closed, never to return. Food and drinking establishments in the Pittsburgh region lost more than 31,000 jobs between October 2019 and October 2020, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

One of those casualties was Spoon, owned and operated by chef Brian Pekarcik. He opened Spoon in 2010, joining a wave of upscale yet casual restaurants like Cure in Lawrenceville and Meat & Potatoes in Downtown.

He got a one-year extension on his 10-year lease just as the pandemic hit, and Pekarcik said he and his wife started to make prepared foods and deliver meals to stay afloat. A federal small-business loan helped for a bit, but it wasn’t enough.

“The pandemic hit, and everything changed,” Pekarcik said.

But hardship spurred innovation — and the growth of a different food-service market.

6463039_web1_ptr-pghfoodscene2-081623

Massoud Hossaini | Tribune-Review

Owner Brian Pekarcik at Local Provisions in Fox Chapel Plaza.

Pekarcik said he started to see the upside of prepared foods and delivery. He said he saw the demand for chef-inspired meals was still there, just not necessarily at full-service restaurants.

That’s when he decided to open Local Provisions, a combination market/cafe/caterer in Fox Chapel Plaza in O’Hara Township. Local Provisions opened in October, and the cafe menu includes items such as Southwest Shrimp Salad, Parm + Asiago Crusted Grilled Cheese and a Spoon Burger.

Pekarcik said his market is filled with products from local producers, including meatballs from DiAnoia’s in the Strip District, baked goods from Driftwood Pizza in Lawrenceville and pita bread from Pitaland in Brookline. He said there is demand to increase access to Pittsburgh’s foodie treasures.

“Why can’t we get a lot of these local great products that are made here in Pittsburgh and bring them in?” he said.

The limited-service food scene, like Local Provisions and other casual establishments, has grown in Pittsburgh coming out of the pandemic. Full-service restaurants are rebounding, but many restaurateurs are still lamenting staff shortages. But that doesn’t appear to be a problem for limited-service establishments.

June employment in full-service restaurants was still 2,000 jobs below its January 2020 total, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. For limited-service establishments, June employment was 2,500 jobs higher than in January 2020.

Pekarcik said this shift was two-pronged: Customer demand for take-away meals grew during the pandemic and was sustained in a new, remote-work era, and restaurant operators like himself wanted to find a better work-life balance.

He said when running Spoon, the restaurant often wouldn’t close until 11:30 each night. Now with Local Provisions, he is home by 9:30 p.m.

Pekarcik said limited service, but with gastronomically created food, is leading a part of Pittsburgh’s food scene growth. He said it shows customers are demanding creative meals but in different outlets than before.

“People appreciate the food you put your heart and soul behind, regardless of location,” he said.

Asian acceleration

One part of the Pittsburgh food scene that appears to be living up to the hype is its Asian restaurants. In 2015, Saveur magazine declared “America’s Next Great Chinatown” was taking root in Pittsburgh.

Mike Chen has been running Asian restaurants in Pittsburgh for 35 years, and he is seeing the growth. He said there are now 50 Asian businesses in Squirrel Hill. And they are continuing to grow in the neighborhood, with a Korean BBQ buffet slated to take over the former Eat’n Park location on Murray Avenue.

He said for many years, when Pittsburgh diners talked about Chinese food, the list started with egg rolls and ended with General Tso’s chicken, but that is changing.

6463039_web1_ptr-pghfoodscene3-7-081623

Massoud Hossaini | Tribune-Review

A dumpling at Everyday Noodles in Squirrel Hill.

Chen opened Everyday Noodles in Squirrel Hill 10 years ago. It was one of the first restaurants in the area to offer authentic Chinese dishes like soup dumplings, and it regularly has lines out the door of diners waiting for a table.

And that’s in addition to the growing number of joints in Oakland serving Korean fried chicken, Taiwanese boba tea and other specialties from East Asia — not to mention the packed tables at establishments such as Korean restaurant Soju in Garfield, sushi specialist Mola in East Liberty and the consistent popularity of Squirrel Hill’s Szechuan staple Chengdu Gourmet, which recently opened a second location in the North Hills.

Saveur noted the region’s fast-growing Asian population, driven by a boom of international college students, was leading the charge. Allegheny County’s Asian population increased by more than 71% between 2010 and 2020, according to census figures.

But Chen notes it is not just Asian students demanding authentic flavors from back home. It is native Pittsburghers, too.

“When we first started Everyday Noodles, over 70% of our customers were Asian. Now it is over 70% American,” Chen said.

Chen said he believes people are traveling more and trying authentic Asian food around the globe and falling in love with the flavors. He also believes an influx of young adults to Pittsburgh are hungry for Asian cuisine that goes beyond broccoli beef.

To fill that demand, Chen is partnering with Mola owner Alex Tang and bringing Pittsburgh its first Asian food hall. Called Novo, the concept will be in the Terminal in the Strip District and include a Korean bakery, a bubble tea cafe, a stand serving Cantonese roast meat and others.

Asian food halls like Urban Hawker in New York City and Pike Kitchen outside Washington, D.C., have become popular foodie destinations.

Chen said the concept fits perfectly with Pittsburgh’s evolving food scene.

“The change is now. They are ready to try something new, that is a bit different than before,” he said. “But they don’t want it too fancy or complicated. They want it to be simple.”

If you’ve been even passively paying attention to Baldur’s Gate 3, the latest, perhaps greatest, fantasy RPG from Larian Studios, you know there’s a lot of sex in it. Some would argue too much, while others might say it’s exactly the amount you tend to see when hot people get thrown into a high-stakes situation. Got mere days to live? You’re probably spending some of it horizontal.

But with all that sex comes the natural urge to draw comparisons between each characters’ scenes. So we’re going to rank them from worst to best. Who comes out on top (or bottom, depending on their preference)? Read on and find out.

Spoilers ahead!

Wyll is shown in a forest area.

I feel so bad for Wyll. I pursued him in Baldur’s Gate 3’s Early Access and had every intention of being a sexy Warlock couple in the final game. But Larian did some major rewrites to his character for the end product and gone is the roguish king I once knew. Instead he’s kinda vanilla, and his sex scene, or lack thereof, feels in line with that.

To its credit, the Wyll sex scene is super sweet because he proposes to you with an acorn (it makes sense in the lore) and then tells you to join him down on one knee. Then y’all start rolling around on the filthy ground in an act of passion. It’s cute, but it’s totally for the “wait until marriage” girlies, and while I respect your decision, I do feel sorry that you have to wait until near the end of the game to get the tamest scene of all.

At the very least, I felt more affirmed in my decision to not pursue Wyll in the main game. R.I.P. to Early Access Wyll, we could’ve had it all.

Minthara is shown glaring at something like she wants to kill it.

Props to Minthara’s sex scene for just going for it. Woo-ing the Drow secret companion is a path paved in blood, and I respect Larian for being like, “okay, you did a lot of reprehensible things to get here so you deserve a little treat,” and that treat is Minthara making the most of her Paladin oath.

But we’re ranking it so low because I just can’t condone the acts it takes to get here. So let me be very clear: If you get this scene, I’m judging you. I bet you’re someone who thinks you can fix her. But you can’t. She’s a genocidal murderer and you helped her do that and pissed off all your party members. Was it worth it? Don’t answer that. I already know what you’re going to say.

Astarion is shown standing on a beach under a blue sky.

Honestly, given that the pale elf vampire is one of the most overtly sexual characters in Baldur’s Gate 3, his sex scene is actually kind of tame, all things considered. Sure, it’s hot, as he grabs you by the throat and does his vampire thing of sucking your blood (willingly), but it’s also one of the scenes that fades to black to leave the outcome up to interpretation. That man came out swinging with aggressive flirting, so I was expecting aggressive sex. It just happened off-screen. A shame.

Shadowheart is shown distressed in a dark area.

Several of the Baldur’s Gate 3 sex scenes are elevated by the emotional beats surrounding them, but Shadowheart’s is pretty much just emotional beats. This girl’s been going through it in her personal storyline, and her trust is shaken after learning some not-so-fun truths about her religious background. That’s what makes your relationship with her so affecting, in that it’s one of the most solid foundations of trust she’s ever had. It culminates in a sweet skinny dipping scene in the ocean that’s adorable, but compared to others, it’s a bit, er, anticlimactic.

Raphael's incubus is shown laying on a bed with its wings spread.

Honestly, I love the absurdity of having sex with an Incubus who’s changed his form to look like the fiendish devil Raphael, in Raphael’s own bed, when Raphael’s not home. Stumbling upon this guy and him telling you Raphael only wants to have sex with himself is an incredible character development bomb on its own. But then the Incubus saying the price for its help is sex is such a wild, off-the-rails tabletop role-playing direction for this scene to go that I can’t help but respect it.

The best part is that, in order to avoid dying due to soul suckage, you have to either fight the Incubus, or allow it to take on your form in its future sexual escapades…and every time they use your form you’re gonna feel it like a magical, remote-controlled vibrator. It’s so silly. I love it.

Karlach is shown standing at her tent at the party's camp.

For Baldur’s Gate 3’s Tiefling Barbarian party member, sex is a big deal. Karlach has an infernal engine in her chest, and that means that she’s hot to the touch, which makes sex an entire ordeal for her. After you bring some Infernal Irons to Dammon, he’s able to help her cool her engine to actually allow person-to-person contact. That’s what makes Karlach’s romance scene cathartic, showcasing an intimacy the two of you thought you might never share. It’s sweet, steamy, and even ties into her larger story. And they say sex scenes can’t move a plot forward.

Lae'zel is shown with her sword drawn preparing to strike.

My favorite part of the Lae’zel sex scene is that it incorporates Baldur’s Gate 3’s dice rolls to give you a true D&D experience when you’re solidifying the relationship. Lae’zel is one of the first characters to proposition you, and our Githyanki queen knows what she wants. She tells you to submit to her whims, but if you’re not feeling like getting on the bottom bunk, you can do a stat check to reverse the roles, and your domineering attitude intrigues her. The divergent scenes aren’t that different, but I’ve gotta give props for Larian’s commitment to the bit.

The Emperor is shown laid back on the ground with a temple in the background.

“Can we fuck a Mind Flayer” is the kind of thing fans joke about in the years before a game like Baldur’s Gate 3, and it turns out that yes, you can. Romancing the Emperor is a loaded (sorry), perhaps absurd path to go down, and the actual culmination of your relationship acknowledges the alien nature of your partner more than others. You have a whole History dice roll about whether or not you know where a Mind Flayer’s mouth is, and if you pass it, you remember that you once saw diagrams of this species that tell you they’re underneath the tentacles protruding from its face. Then, floating in the astral plane, you stroke and kiss his tentacles until The Emperor wraps them around you and gets down to business.

It’s clear Baldur’s Gate 3 gets how wild this is, because it chooses to double down on it by showing that your teammates, through your telepathic connection, saw the whole thing. It took Dragon Age: Inquisition’s “getting walked in on” scene with Iron Bull and cranked it up to 11. You can also choose to ask the Emperor to change back into the Guardian form it used for most of the game—the one you designed in the character creator—but the game fades to black before it shows any such relations.

Larian is brave enough to let my character fondle the tentacles of an alien species but won’t let him fuck the Tiefling daddy of my own creation? Lame.

Mizora is shown casting a fire spell from her hands.

The Mizora sex scene sticks out to me because it’s one of the more unorthodox approaches to sex in a game that already has Mind Flayer sex. Having relations with Wyll’s handler is one part, well, having sex with a devil, and another part magical, hellish BDSM. She uses her magic to pluck away at your senses, allowing you to choose between different pains and pleasures from the Nine Hells, all of which she conjures from a distance with no physical contact.

While I find the thought of someone pursuing a character who tried to have Karlach (the most innocent and good character in this game) killed detestable, I have to say, I admire her technique, and how well Baldur’s Gate 3 handles the intersection of world-building and sexual conquest. That’s actually why my top three sex scenes here rank as highly as they do, because they feel so wonderfully tailored to the game’s setting.

Halsin is shown talking to a Dragonborn.

You knew Halsin, the Druid who turns into a bear during sex, was going to rank high. The “bear scene” is infamous now, even outside of the Baldur’s Gate 3 community. It is a perfect encapsulation of a tabletop RPG escalation of a DM and a player “yes-anding” a situation into its most ridiculous conclusion. The laugh-out-loud absurdity is perfectly punctuated by a poor, traumatized squirrel, dropping its acorn and running away just before the fade-out.

Even if Halsin doesn’t maintain his bear form during the deed, that man is a dedicated service top who is there for your pleasure. He also, even after taking great care of you, is willing to open up the relationship if that’s your jam. He is a giver, whether he’s on two feet or four.

Gale is shown looking up at something in a church.

I consulted several Baldur’s Gate 3 players about their number-one picks. As a Gale romancer myself, I wanted to be sure that ranking my Wizard boy toy at the top wasn’t just a matter of bias toward a character whom I kissed a lot. If Gale only had the one sex scene in which he materializes a bed in the middle of a forest for you to have at it, he wouldn’t rank very high at all. But the divergent scene, which looks like it ate up a majority of Baldur’s Gate 3’s cinematic budget, propels Gale of Waterdeep to the very top of the fantasy sex hierarchy.

Gale, believing his days to be numbered because of the magical bomb in his chest, wants to create the “perfect” night for you. He creates a magical replica of his Waterdeep study, where you sit together on the balcony overlooking the ocean. But he wants to bond with you in the way gods do, with your souls intertwined and not retrained by the limits of earthly forms. So this cheeky fucker astral projects you both into a space-like void where your spirits entangle while he expands and multiplies his own body to instigate a floating, spiritual foursome as your bodies spin through the void. It is so extra, it is so tinged with melancholy, but goddamn, it is one of the most memorable scenes in a game already full of them.

Sex is a big part of Baldur’s Gate 3, and every sex scene has its own layers and nuances that tie back into each relationship. Not everyone is a wizard who has experience fucking a god, nor does everyone have to be in order to both give you a good time and expand upon your tender relationship. But as a climactic moment that builds upon the (potentially) tragic romance, the magical Dungeons & Dragons setting, and is just a visual splendor to behold, Gale comes out on top, multiple times, all at once.
