Emerald Fennell, Barry Keoghan unzip erotic cemetery scene in 'Saltburn' - Entertainment Weekly News

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Saltburn.

When it came time to shoot this eye-popping Saltburn scene (below), something was bothering writer-director Emerald Fennell. Initially, the script only called for Barry Keoghan’s Oliver to finger and kiss the freshly dug grave of his beloved Felix (Jacob Elordi). But on the day of filming, Fennell changed her mind. “I spoke to Barry in the morning, and I just said, ‘I don’t know, Barry. I think that he would...unzip,’” she recalls with a devilish smirk. “And Barry just said, ‘Yup.’”

“She plants seeds, Emerald, you know what I mean?” Keoghan says of his director. “She knows that they're going to grow, these seeds, especially when she plants them with me. But it is a testament to Emerald and having that idea and me meeting it with, to be honest, no questions. I was totally on board for it.”

Armed with Keoghan’s gung ho spirit and a rain machine, they shut down the set. Just Fennell, Keoghan, cinematographer Linus Sandgren, and script supervisor Sam Donovan were permitted to watch the star shtup dirt… Not that the shtupping was the point, says Keoghan.

“For me, it wasn't about fecking the grave, it was more about I don't know what to do with this obsession; it’s making me confused and making me unhuman in a way,” the Irish actor says. “It was a total discovery for him, I think. And it was sad. It was very, very sad.”

Fennell admits that though the resulting scene is at once “shocking and darkly funny and uncomfortable,” at its heart, it “had to be a moment of profound despair — an almost relatable moment of grief over this completely forever unrequited love.” As such, the shot lingers and lingers (and lingers) on Keoghan and his, ahem, mounting despair.

Though Fennell contends that “the awful length of it is what makes it so powerful,” there was some early pearl-clutching behind the scenes. “People said, ‘Oh, we know what’s going to happen. Why do we have to watch it?’ And I said, ‘Watching it is the point! Not cutting away is the point. You have to sit in your discomfort — you can only understand it if you sit with it.’”

Plus, there’s the fact that her star knocked it out of the cemetery. “There’s no way it couldn’t be in the film. There’s no way I could see a performance of that dedication — an expression of grief and love as intense as that — and not show it,” she says. “It was the most extraordinary thing I’d ever seen.”

The scene also had a lasting impact on its star… for better or for worse. “I can't look at graves anymore the same way. Do you know what I mean?” he says, joking, “They won't allow me into graveyards actually. They'll see me coming. They'll be like, ‘Nah, nah.’ Especially if I arrive with no clothes on.”

Saltburn is in theaters now.

Nashville's startup scene is booming. Here's why investors and founders are moving to 'Music City' - CNBC

On a flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Nashville, Tennessee, earlier this month, 36-year-old Robin Shah settled into his seat and prepared to crank out some work for his health tech startup, Thyme Care.

Founded in 2020, Thyme Care helps cancer patients manage their disease by connecting them with the personalized care and resources they need. Shah, the co-founder and CEO, sports a purple Thyme Care sticker on his water bottle, and it caught the eye of the venture capitalist sitting next to him on the plane.

The VC recognized Shah's company – an occurrence that is hardly unusual for him anymore. As more investors and founders are flocking to explore Nashville's booming health care and technology scene, Shah said he gets recognized regularly. Sometimes people know his first and last names.

"It happens probably every two or three flights," Shah told CNBC in an interview.

Nashville is home to more than 680,000 people, including Shah, who love the city for its southern charm and small-town vibe. But while the community might feel quaint, Nashville is a titan of the health-care industry. The city supports more than 900 health-care companies that generate a total of $97 billion in revenue each year, according to the Nashville Health Care Council.

As a result, the city is bursting with opportunities for founders like Shah who are looking for ways to disrupt the industry and redefine the patient experience.

CNBC spoke with a dozen founders, investors and executives in Nashville who described a tight-knit, supportive health tech community that's growing larger by the day.

"Great companies are being born here," Shah said.

Nicknamed "Music City," Nashville is chock-full of country singers and perpetually buzzing with live music. It has also become a popular destination for bachelorette parties, so groups of women, often donning pink or bedazzled cowboy hats, can be seen wandering in and out of bars on the popular street called Broadway.

But just minutes away from the party vibe on Broadway lies Nashville's vibrant network of health systems, startups and investment firms.

The city's reputation as a health-care hub was catalyzed when HCA Healthcare, one of the first for-profit hospital companies in the U.S., was founded there in 1968. HCA operates more than 180 hospitals across 20 states and facilitates more than 37 million patient encounters each year, according to its website.

The company has helped attract troves of health-care professionals to Nashville, and other organizations quickly followed suit.

Community Health Systems, which operates 74 acute care hospitals, Brookdale Senior Living, which runs more than 670 senior living communities, and Acadia Healthcare, which operates more than 250 behavioral health facilities, are all headquartered in the greater Nashville area.

Prominent higher education institutions like Vanderbilt University, including the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Belmont University, and Meharry Medical College are also based in Nashville.

"Fundamentally, Nashville is sort of the healthcare capital of the world. That's how we describe ourselves often," Kyle Cooksey, chief experience officer at Monogram Health, told CNBC.

Monogram Health, headquartered in a Nashville suburb, offers digital tools that can help patients with conditions like chronic kidney disease manage their care from home. The company closed a $375 million growth funding round in January, and former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist serves as chairman of the board.

Cooksey said the Nashville startup ecosystem is "incredibly supportive" and mission-driven, and now so entrenched in the city that it's hard to miss.

"You can't literally go a block here without stumbling across a health-care company," he said.

As a result, health-care talent and expertise is plentiful in Nashville, which is a substantial perk for founders building companies there.

John Bass, a Nashville native and the CEO of a venture studio called Hashed Health, said the city is such a "highly concentrated" environment of health-care professionals that it can be hard to leave. He founded Hashed Health, which aims to de-risk and spin out health-care startups, in 2016.

Bass said VCs in Nashville tend to take a pragmatic and conservative approach to investing, which reflects the challenging reality of building solutions for the traditionally technology-averse health care industry. He said innovation in this space requires a careful understanding of regulations and constraints.

Bass has considered trading in Music City for the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, but he said he is glad he stayed.

"Moving to a different city would be fun, but I don't think any other town has that same level of concentrated talent that Nashville has," Bass told CNBC in an interview. "It still feels like it's the right size, it hasn't grown so big that it's too diluted."

Ellen Herlacher, a partner at the health-care VC firm LRVHealth, grew up in Nashville and lives in Boston. She said Boston is a strong city for both academic and clinical innovation in health care, but Nashville is the center of health-care business.

Herlacher travels to Nashville every six to eight weeks to meet with portfolio companies and co-investors. Sometimes she makes the trip two weeks in a row.

Luke Benda, co-founder and CEO of the Nashville-based medical robotics company Healing Innovations, said the city gives founders easy access to the "heavy hitters" of hospital operations, which can be difficult to reach, let alone hire, from elsewhere.

However, he said startups also need traditional technologists like software developers and engineers, which can be harder to find in Nashville.

The broader tech talent pool has improved in recent years as tech companies like Amazon and Oracle have established hubs in Nashville, but Bass said it's still not always easy to find true technologists.

Amazon announced it would build an expansive new office space in Nashville in 2018 and promised to bring more than 5,000 corporate and technology jobs to the city. Oracle, which completed a deal to buy the electronic medical records company Cerner last year, is building its second U.S. headquarters in Nashville for $1.2 billion, according to The Tennessean

"It's still the reality that you're probably not going to find everything you need here," Bass said.

Support for Nashville entrepreneurs

Nashville's health tech startup scene has also benefited from significant investment from local organizers and government officials.

In November, the Greater Nashville Venture Capital Association (GNVCA) officially launched. The organization is membership-based and aims to make capital and talent more widely available to investors in the region by attracting new VCs, organizing networking events and sourcing investment opportunities.

Vanderbilt provided a grant to support the GNVCA's initial operations, according to a blog post

The GNVCA was able to launch partly because a "critical mass" of VC firms have now set up shop in Nashville, said Marcus Whitney, a member of GNVCA's board and a co-founder and partner of the firm Jumpstart Health Investors.

Whitney has lived in Nashville for more than two decades, but he said the VC and startup ecosystem has changed "drastically" in the last five years. He said the city is attracting new residents from business hubs on both coasts, including founders, VCs and investment bankers.

"We look a lot more like a tech and innovation hub than we did 10 years ago, that's for sure," he told CNBC in an interview.

Nashville is also home to the Nashville Entrepreneur Center, which helps connect startups with the resources and support they need. The center opened its flagship facility in 2010 after the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce commissioned a 75-person "Entrepreneurship Task Force" back in 2007. It has worked with more than 10,000 entrepreneurs since 2010, according to its website.

Benda said the Entrepreneur Center is an "amazing hub" full of mentors that want to help founders, even if they don't know what they are doing. Landon Gibbs, managing partner at Nashville-based Altitude Ventures, said that the center is the "front door" for entrepreneurship in the city.

"The community is really behind that," Gibbs said.

Eligible Nashville entrepreneurs can also become members of the Greater Nashville Technology Council and the Nashville Health Care Council. The Nashville Health Care Council is made up of more than 300 companies, including HCA Healthcare, and it offers networking opportunities and educational events.

Raelyn Wilson, co-founder and CEO of Nashville-based Peer Supply, said there are "constant" social events for the startup community in Nashville, including many that are very casual. Peer Supply, a platform that helps to improve health-care supply chains, is Wilson's first venture as a founder.

"I can't tell you how often people want to grab coffee or grab a glass of wine or something just to talk about the industry and share lessons learned," Wilson told CNBC in an interview.

A strong community feel

Beyond the practical business advantages, many health tech founders and investors have found that Nashville is simply a fun place to live and raise a family.

Live music is ubiquitous in the city, and Tennessee has no state income tax, which Whitney said is attractive to many residents. Whitney helped bring professional soccer to Nashville, and Tennessee is home to professional football, hockey and basketball teams as well.

"We have, I think, all the things that you would want from a city, but probably a little bit more community than maybe some of the more aggressive tier-one cities have," he said.

However, Whitney said there is still "a lot of work to do" to improve the education system in Nashville. Tennessee ranks 33rd in education in the U.S., according to U.S. News & World Report. He added that infrastructure will also have to keep pace with the city as it grows, as he is already noticing more traffic.

Herlacher of LRVHealth said Nashville is still relatively accessible and easy to navigate, adding that there is much less traffic compared to cities like Boston and San Francisco.

"It's not hard to leave work, drive 15 minutes, quickly grab a drink with somebody and then be at home for dinner at 6:30 p.m.," she said.

Herlacher said Nashville is almost "unrecognizable" from when she grew up there. But despite all the change, she says diversity is still a challenge. She said it is less common to find women in entrepreneurship there, for instance.

Rachel Soper Sanders, co-founder and CEO of the personalized supplement company Rootine, has observed this disparity firsthand. Sanders attended Vanderbilt and moved back to Nashville when she decided to build Rootine. She said it is still unusual to find female founders, and especially venture-backed female founders, in the city.

Even so, she said she has found a close-knit, supportive startup ecosystem in Nashville that has continued to blossom as it grows.

"There's this new feeling, excitement, energy, where Nashville is not just Nashville anymore, it's not just the southeast, but it's connected to everywhere else," she told CNBC in an interview.

Thyme Care's Shah said Nashville is very welcoming to newcomers, and he found that the health tech community embraced him immediately. It was surprisingly easy for him to adjust after moving from New York more than five years ago.

The week he arrived in Nashville, Shah met an entrepreneur in the industry who introduced him to 30 health-care executives in 24 hours.

"Within two months, I went and met all these people, and everyone was so welcoming to me," he said. "There's so much opportunity to learn from each other."

Bass of Hashed Health said there is a "strong community feel" among entrepreneurs and VCs in Nashville. It's not uncommon to run into peers and colleagues at restaurants, cafes or back-to-school nights.

"I just came from my neighborhood coffee shop, and I probably saw three people I knew that live in the neighborhood, and they're in health care, or tech or venture capital," Bass said. "It's almost a daily thing."

In some cases, Nashville's health tech community can be supportive to a fault.

Chase Spurlock, co-founder and CEO of Decode Health, said people can experience a phenomenon known as the "Nashville no," where they are told "maybe" indefinitely. He said it is a reflection of the city's southern roots and desire not to be too negative.

Decode Health is a data platform that is designed to help pharmaceutical, diagnostic and technology companies identify new biomarkers and build new clinical decision support tools. Spurlock, a Tennessee native, founded the company in Nashville in 2019.

Spurlock said he is "proud" that he has been able to stay in the area. He said there is a genuine desire to see entrepreneurs and technology succeed in Nashville, and that the community is committed to paying it forward.

"I have never needed help and not received help in the Nashville community," Spurlock told CNBC. "That's, I think, what really makes us special."

Lifetime stuffs viewers' stockings with Christmas movie sex scene - Entertainment Weekly News

Lifetime is inviting its viewers to join the naughty list.

Though most holiday television movies which air on the likes of Hallmark, Lifetime, Netflix, and more are fairly chaste, Lifetime is taking a new position and including a sex scene in forthcoming A Cowboy Christmas Romance. It marks the first ever sex scene in their annual holiday movie series, It's a Wonderful Lifetime — and we all know that there's nothing like your first time.

Jana Kramer in 'A Cowboy Christmas Romance'. Lifetime

The movie, which premieres on the network on Dec. 9, follows real estate agent Lexie Crenshaw (Jana Kramer), a real estate agent who returns home to Arizona to reclaim land belonging to rancher Coby Mason (Adam Senn). But the land isn't the only thing Lexie wants to claim after meeting Coby and feeling a spark of attraction.

Sarah Drew (Grey's Anatomy) wrote the movie, and she and Kramer discussed the scene on Kramer's podcast Whine Down on Monday. "It's the first Christmas movie that has a sex scene," Kramer said. "I read it and I was like, 'Well, this is going to be interesting...Spoiler alert — he lays me down on some hay, and then we, you know. Obviously, it’s still Lifetime, it’s still family. But it was pushing limits there, too. They didn’t cut anything. I was so happy that they really left it all in there.”

Drew also commented, noting how pleased she is that Lifetime was game for leaving the scene in the film because to her it was a crucial part of the movie. "It all came out so beautifully, but especially the scene in the kitchen. I had written into the stage directions, ‘He pulls her up onto the counter, he shoves things off the table,’” Drew said. “I put it all in there, so I was like, ‘Don’t take the steam and the sex away from me. I wrote it on purpose, I want it in there.' How sad would that have been if that scene just got cut?"

Tia Maggini, SVP of scripted content at Lifetime, also addressed the spicy first for the network. "We think that there’s an audience out there that’s hungry for grown-up romance, and we’re looking forward to adding some smolder to the usual holiday sugar and spice,” she told Variety. “We love trying new things, and we’re excited about this new ‘first’ for us for a holiday movie.”

Hagerstown driver remained at scene of Frederick County deputy crash - Herald-Mail Media

Maryland State Police said Wednesday that the driver of a Mazda — involved in an incident this week in which a Frederick County deputy cruiser crashed along Interstate 70 — remained at the scene.

The deputy was taken to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown on Tuesday for treatment of minor injuries, Todd Wivell, spokesperson for the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, has said.

That deputy was identified by state police on Wednesday afternoon as Deputy First Class Kevin Lewis.

According to a preliminary investigation, state police said the Mazda and the deputy were both traveling east on Interstate 70 on Tuesday morning when the Mazda tried to make a lane change, subsequently causing the deputy to swerve to avoid the crash.

Lewis' marked cruiser ended up off the side of the interstate south of Hagerstown in a gully by the tree line with the cruiser's airbag deployed, a Washington County 911 supervisor has said.

Maryland State Police released this photo of the Frederick County Sheriff's Department vehicle that was involved in a crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 70 south of Hagerstown.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday along eastbound I-70, just west of Md. 65 (Sharpsburg Pike), according to state police.

The Mazda driver, Annalisa Munn, 43, of the Hagerstown area, was issued a citation for an unsafe lane change, a state police spokesperson said Wednesday in an email.

State police said Munn was not taken to the hospital for injuries. She did not have any passengers in the Mazda.

According to the online docket for Munn's traffic citation, next to "contributed to accident," the docket states, "No."

State police are still investigating the crash.

The citation docket lists the Mazda as a CX-5, which is a crossover SUV.

Lifetime’s upcoming holiday movie is set to have the network’s first-ever sex scene for a Christmas film. One of the best-known producers of holiday content, Lifetime has made hundreds of Christmas films over the years. This year, one of the network’s new movies includes A Cowboy Christmas Romance.

10 Movies Where the First 10 Minutes Is Better Than the Rest of the Movie - MovieWeb

Sometimes it seems as though filmmakers take the concept for a movie to a studio only to show them the first 10 minutes. Which was enough of a taste to get the studio to green light, but as a misdirection. Why? Because some movies feel like all the thoughtful creative effort went into crafting the first chunk of the first act, and then there was no juice left for the remainder.

These are the movies that peak not just in the first act, but in the first 10 minutes. Now, that's not to say these films are poor, but their effectiveness does experience a rather rapid decline. From slasher sequels and original superhero films to Hanna Barbera adaptations and less original superhero film, these are the films that peak from the outset.

10 Scream 3 (2000)

Scream 3
Scream 3
Release Date
February 3, 2000
Director
Wes Craven
Cast
Liev Schreiber, Beth Toussaint, Roger Jackson, Kelly Rutherford, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox
Main Genre
Horror

Widely considered the nadir of the Ghostface saga, Scream 3 is certainly comparatively weak. But it's not so bad, even if it does peak in the beginning. The narrative follows Sidney Prescott as she leaves self-imposed isolation to help her pals face down what may very well be the deadliest killer yet. A killer with a connection to Sid's own past.

Why the Opening Scene Stands Out

After Columbine, many fingers were pointed at Scream and Scream 2. They were both box office smashes and they both showed flesh-and-blood humans killing flesh-and-blood humans. In other words, a strong connection was seen where there wasn't really one at all. The price of that? Scream 3 was neutered. Ehren Kruger, replacing Kevin Williamson as screenwriter, did his best, but at the end of the day, if Scream 3 is more funny than scary, which is not what Scream should be.

But the opening scene, where Ghostface toys with Cotton Weary on the phone before ultimately killing him and his girlfriend, feels like it could have just as easily come from the more effective Scream 2.

Cast

Main Genre

The opening of this ghost movie is memorably bloody, but everything that follows is absolutely dreadful. Ghost Ship follows a salvage crew as they discover a mysterious vessel in the middle of the Bering Sea. After finding no one aboard, they see an opportunity to steal what's there and bail. Too bad the ghosts have other plans.

Why the Opening Scene Stands Out

Once the film shows the audience how the titular ship became a ghost ship (a steel rope breaking and bisecting everyone aboard), there's nothing of merit to the film. It's a group of recognizable actors barely playing characters walking around a drafty, cobweb-covered set meant to look like a ship.

Main Genre
Adventure

A box office hit with a few cases of spot-on casting (particularly when it comes to Matthew Lillard), Scooby-Doo is nonetheless a misguided affair. The narrative follows Mystery Inc. after they've been shown up and forced to shutter. But, now they've been called to a peculiar island for a new mystery, and it could be the very case to bump them back up to the spotlight.

Why the Opening Scene Stands Out

The opening scene of Scooby-Doo is essentially as close as a live-action film can get to recreating an episode of the original show, with them unmasking a supposed ghost who, of course, immediately claims he would have gotten away with his crimes were it not for the kids of Mystery Inc. But, once the gang gets to the island (and especially once Scrappy-Doo gets involved), the ship sinks fast.

J.J Abrams took over the M:I franchise for a round with Mission: Impossible III, a fairly forgettable entry that's mostly bolstered by a tremendous performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman. The plot follows Ethan Hunt as he loses a partner and throws away everything he loves to go on a vendetta of a mission.

Why the Opening Scene Stands Out

The opening scene, where Ethan rescues Lindsey (played wonderfully, and briefly, by Keri Russell) only to have a microchip in her head explode is about as memorable as M:I gets save for the Burj Khalifa hang in Ghost Protocol. Unfortunately, while not weak per se, the rest of the film just kind of plods along until the unceremonious resolution.

Director
Peter Berg
Cast
Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman, Jae Head, Eddie Marsan, David Mattey
Rating
PG-13

Peter Berg's Hancock follows a superhero whose attitude really isn't so super. Hancock has little issue with leaving lots of collateral damage and doing nothing to help clean up the same way he has little issue with open intoxication before noon. But, now that Hancock's saved some PR big-wig, he finds himself wrapped up in a campaign to improve his image.

Why the Opening Scene Stands Out

Hancock had a killer premise, Will Smith when he was still basically at his peak, Charlize Theron, and a budget. Yet, one would be forgiven for forgetting every scene save for the first (when Hancock drunkenly quasi-saves the day only to cause more damage than he prevented) and all the ridiculous stuff in the third act between Hancock and Theron's character.

5 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull reintroduces audiences to the title character after an extended hiatus. This time, instead of seeking the Ark of the Covenant or the Holy Grail, Indy's been dragged into finding a mysterious skull with entirely unknown origins.

Why the Opening Scene Stands Out

Crystal Skull is one of those highly-anticipated films that not only let down fans, it was nonsensical. But the first stretch of runtime, taking place at a nuclear weapon test site, is pretty much classic Indy (save for the fridge and CGI groundhog). There's the whip, betrayal, the title character's confidence...it's all there. Too bad it just grows increasingly silly from there.

Gavin Hood's X-Men Origins: Wolverine shows audiences the early days of Logan, AKA Wolverine. Recruited by a shadowy organization alongside his brother to fight in war after war, Wolverine eventually realizes he needs to throw away his dog tags if he wants any hope for a normal life.

Why the Opening Scene Stands Out

The opening montage, which shows Wolverine and Sabretooth fighting in the Revolutionary War, WWII, etc. via stylistic flourishes and snappy editing, is certainly memorable. It instills hope that the movie will be equally stylish and actually devote runtime to the complexities of the brothers' relationship. It largely fails to do so from then on out.

Pixar's Up tells the story of the elderly Carl Fredericsen, who has lived a relatively small but happy life. After losing his spouse, Fredericsen teams up with an adventurous kid to go out and live a little. How? Strap balloons to his home and float to South America.

Why the Opening Scene Stands Out

Just one of several Disney movies to explore serious real-life issues, Up is the biggest heart-breaker of them all. And, to be fair, the movie doesn't exactly go wrong after the gut-wrenching, elongated opening (which effectively shows a man's entire life, right up to the death of his wife). It's just that the film can never get back to that level of emotional poignance again.

Spectre, Daniel Craig's fourth adventure as 007, shows the dismantling of Bond's life by an unknown, shady organization. Or, rather, the head of it, who may be just as involved in Bond's past as he is his present.

Why the Opening Scene Stands Out

Spectre was a known bear to make, just see Craig's regrettable and 'ungrateful' comments after its release. But the 24th Bond film, director Sam Mendes second and probably final after Skyfall, has its merits. And most of them come in the opening scene, set during a massive Day of the Dead festival in the middle of Mexico City. Bond listens in on a meeting only to be discovered, setting off a firefight that concludes with Bond fighting a helicopter pilot as the whirlybird swirls over thousands of pedestrians.

Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder will likely always be seen as one of MCU Phase Four's weakest films, but some of its plot points are major. The story concerns the God of Thunder's teaming up with Valkyrie and his love, Jane Foster (now the Mighty Thor), to take on his greatest threat yet. Namely, Gorr the God Butcher (a scene-stealing Christian Bale), who is on a deadly quest of revenge that, hopefully, can be diverted or stopped altogether.

There's also Foster's illness to contend with...not to mention the fact that her using Mjölnir is only expediting the deadly process.

Why the Opening Scene Stands Out

Ever since Thor: Love and Thunder was released, MCU fans have been asking what went wrong. After all, Thor: Ragnarok was such a phenomenal course correction for the franchise and director Waititi's return certainly seemed like a step in the right direction. But Love and Thunder is a bit too much Waititi. His silly lovability gets a lot of mileage if it's done in moderation and paired with strong storytelling, which Ragnarok had.

And so to do Love and Thunder's Gorr scenes...there just aren't nearly enough of them. But he sure does make a strong first impression, losing his daughter while begging the gods for safety, only to meet his god and get laughter in return. It's devastating, and the viewer understands why Gorr picks up the sword.

Elon Musk visits scene of kibbutz massacre with Benjamin Netanyahu - The Guardian

Elon Musk has joined the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in visiting a kibbutz that was attacked by Hamas on 7 October, after criticism of his endorsement of an antisemitic post on X.

The owner of X, the site formerly known as Twitter, has been criticised for supporting a post on his platform that falsely claimed Jewish people were stoking hatred against white people. High-profile advertisers have also suspended spending on the site after a report that ads were appearing next to pro-Nazi content.

On Monday Musk, the world’s richest man, and Netanyahu toured Kfar Aza, a kibbutz that Hamas militants attacked on 7 October as part of its assault that killed 1,200 people, triggering an Israeli military offensive in Gaza.

Video released by Netanyahu’s office showed Musk, wearing a protective vest, taking photos or videos of the devastation in Kfar Aza where dozens of people were killed. “It was jarring to see the scene of the massacre,” Musk later said in an X Spaces conversation with Netanyahu. Musk said he was troubled by video and photos that the prime minister showed him of the killings of civilians, including children.

They spoke broadly about the conflict, the protests it has generated, Hamas, the Middle East and more but did not touch on antisemitism online nor on Musk’s controversial post.

Hearing Netanyahu describe the destruction of Hamas, which Israel has set as a war goal, as necessary for any prospective peace with the Palestinians, Musk sounded his general agreement. “Those that are intent on murder must be neutralised,” he said. “The propaganda must stop that is training people to be murderers in the future. And then, making Gaza prosperous. And if that happens, I think it will be a good future.”

Netanyahu replied: “I hope you will be involved. And the fact that you came here, I think, speaks volumes to your commitment to try to secure a better future.”

Musk later met with Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, who said that the tech mogul has “a huge role to play” to combat antisemitism, which his social media platform is accused of spreading.

“I think we need to fight it together because on the platforms which you lead, unfortunately, there’s a harbouring of a lot of … antisemitism,” Herzog said.

Musk faced widespread condemnation, including from the White House, after he agreed with a post on X on 15 November that read: “Jewish communties [sic] have been pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them.” Musk responded on X with: “You have said the actual truth.”

Israel’s communications minister, Shlomo Karhi, posted on X on Monday about a deal his ministry had reached with Musk’s Starlink satellite internet company. Musk had proposed deploying Starlink in Gaza for use by “internationally recognised aid organisations”.

“As a result of this significant agreement, Starlink satellite units can only be operated in Israel with the approval of the Israeli Ministry of Communications, including the Gaza Strip,” Karhi wrote, without providing further details.

Reuters and Associated Press contributed to this article.

Scream 3
