Coast Guard helps Vista Star back to port - WDIO

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

Dozens of passengers aboard the tourist boat, wearing life jackets, watched as other vessels nudged the ship and people on shore helped pull the Vista Star into place behind the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. About 32 passengers disembarked from the vessel shortly before 12:30 p.m.

Petty Officer Trevor Matelski, from Coast Guard Station Duluth, said they received a report that the boat was disabled out of the Duluth entry.

"We went over there to make sure everyone was safe. We were going to leave it to commercial towing to take care of it. They were doing a stern tow taking them through the Duluth entry, when they started drifting towards the wall. So we stepped in, and did a side tow, and assisted them safely under the lift bridge with the help of another vessel. All three of us moored them up safely," Matelski said.

Vista's assistant general manager, Colleen Smith, said in a statement, "We had to drop anchor and call the Coast Guard for assistance to be towed back into our dock.  Our crew is trained for emergency situations like this on a monthly basis and did great handling the situation.  Everyone on board left smiling, and we are hoping to be back up and running for the holiday weekend."

The Vista Star is part of the Vista Fleet, which offers tours of the Twin Ports area.

Port of Savannah calls 10% container volume drop “better than expected” - DC Velocity

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

The Port of Savannah said today that a drop of nearly 10% for its container volume in May was “better than expected” in relation to the staggering impact of the coronavirus pandemic on both production and demand.

And in a glimmer of optimism, the port said it continues to see a reduction in voided sailings—the term for cancelled containership trips—with vessels arriving via the Panama Canal carrying greater than average loads, and with exports holding up well.

By the numbers, the port handled 337,359 twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) in May, a decrease of 9.7% or 36,000 TEUs compared to the same month a year ago, according to the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA). For the fiscal year to date through May 2020, GPA's container trade was slightly behind its comparable 2019 performance, at 4.1 million TEUs, a decrease of 18,670 or 0.5%. Total cargo for the period from July 2019 through May 2020 reached 34.7 million tons, an increase of nearly 350,000 or 1%.

Despite the slump, the port is continuing to invest in infrastructure expansion, GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch said in a release. That expansion is led by its Mason Mega Rail project, a plan that has been in the works for more than four years and is designed to expand GPA’s service to the Southeast and Midwestern U.S.

The GPA has now put into operation the first nine of 18 planned tracks, and will commission its first two of eight planned rail-mounted gantry cranes by July 1. Spanning nine tracks, the cranes speed the transition of containers between trains and trucks, serving the Class I railroads Norfolk Southern and CSX. When complete, the Mason Mega Rail project will double annual rail capacity at Garden City Terminal to 2 million TEUs, increasing the number of working tracks from 8 to 18, Lynch said.

It could take weeks for Aurora police to release information on officers who posed at scene of Elijah McClain arrest - The Denver Post

McClain Family

Elijah McClain

It could take weeks for the Aurora Police Department to release its investigation into officers who posed for photos near the spot where the same department violently arrested Elijah McClain last year, leading to his death.

Interim police Chief Vanessa Wilson promised Monday night that she would release the entire investigation upon its conclusion. The investigation was completed Monday night, but the department is waiting until the entire disciplinary process is finished before releasing more information.

If any of the officers involved decide to appeal the decision, it could takes weeks or months before police share the information with the public.

“Nothing is final yet, and that’s why we haven’t released anything,” Detective Faith Goodrich, an Aurora police spokeswoman, said.

Wilson met Tuesday morning with the department’s internal Conduct Review Board, which recommends what discipline should be taken. Goodrich would not say what discipline was recommended or whether Wilson had made a final decision. After the officers are advised of the discipline, they have time to choose whether to accept or appeal it.

The earliest the information would likely be released is later this week, Goodrich said. She did not know what information, if any, the department would release should the officers appeal the discipline. In a previous case, the department withheld all information except the disciplinary decision and the officer’s name pending the appeals process.

The department opened an investigation Thursday into the photos, which have been reported by CBS4 to show officers pretending to use carotid chokeholds on each other. Aurora police used the same chokehold on 23-year-old McClain while detaining him on Aug. 24 before a paramedic injected him with the heavy sedative ketamine. McClain, accused of no crime, died in a local hospital several days later after being declared brain dead.

Goodrich said the photos were reported by another Aurora police officer.

McClain’s death has garnered international attention over the past two weeks following weeks of protests around the world against police brutality and the killings of Black people by law enforcement. Hundreds gathered Saturday in Aurora to protest McClain’s death and honor his life, though many of the largely peaceful protesters were pushed off of the municipal center lawn by Aurora police.

“It’s not that we don’t want to release that information but if it interferes with the civil service appeals the decision could be overturned,” Goodrich said.

Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman said Tuesday he was “deeply concerned” over the investigation, but he won’t comment until the internal review is complete.

The investigation is finished, though police say they won’t release the photos or other information about the case because doing so could jeopardize the appeals process.

The public still does not know what caused Wilson to fire Officer Levi Huffine in February. The department said Huffine was guilty of “severe misconduct” but refused to say what he did, where the incident occurred or when it happened, citing an ongoing appeal by Huffine.

Huffine’s appeal is scheduled for late September — more than seven months after he was fired.

The department’s practice of withholding records until the appeals process is complete differs from that used by the Denver Police Department. The Denver Department of Public Safety regularly releases information about cases once a disciplinary decision has been made, regardless of whether the officer appeals that decision.

A state law passed in 2019 aimed at increasing transparency into police discipline does not require agencies to release internal affairs documents until after the appeals process is complete.

Aurora police leadership are scheduled to appear before the City Council at a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to explain their response to the protests Saturday, though the discussion will now likely include the internal affairs case as well.

How The Food Lens Guided Boston's Restaurant Scene as the Coronavirus Hit - NBC10 Boston

The Food Lens, a digital guide to restaurants and bars in Boston, was founded in 2017 by Molly Ford and Sarah Jesup, Boston University classmates who traveled the world together compiling Google Docs of their favorite places.

"The Boston food scene, it's kind of like the little sister to New York, like we don't get enough love and attention here for how many amazing chefs and restaurants are in Boston and how much the food scene has changed," Ford said.

But that food scene is changing drastically now that the coronavirus pandemic forced restaurants to close its dining rooms for three months. The website had to adapt as well, as the hosts of The Food Lens' podcast told us for our own podcast on food amid the coronavirus crisis, "The Dish I Miss."

During the shutdown, The Food Lens immediately went from writing about the best places to go out to eat and drink in Boston to reporting on what's open for takeout and delivery, as well as interviewing chefs and restaurant insiders about how the virus changed their lives.

Meanwhile, there were changes at "The Food Lens Podcast," hosted by Ford and Catherine Smart, a former Boston Globe food writer, current cast member on Christopher Kimball's "Milk Street TV" and co-founder and CEO of the food startup Not Just Co. The show had started with candid interviews with restaurant industry insiders, but when the pandemic hit, the hosts ended up feeling helpless.

"This is an industry that we care deeply about, that has provided us with a livelihood, like we just felt so helpless," Smart said.

The podcast is now in its fourth season and continues to interview food industry insiders, now about the restaurant scene opening back up.

To listen to the full conversation about The Food Lens' journey, the dishes and restaurants they've missed the most during quarantine and their take on the future of the restaurant industry in Boston, click play on the episode above or on the podcast platform of your choice.

Elijah McClain Death Scene Photos and Aurora Cops Placed on Leave - Westword

Many Black Lives Matter protesters have called for defunding law enforcement agencies under the theory that they're too broken to reform — and the Aurora Police Department continues to provide arguments for this approach.

Aurora officers weren't criminally charged for in connection with their August 2019 encounter with Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old unarmed black man who died despite committing no crime; he was initially targeted for dancing to music while wearing a ski mask on his way home from a convenience store. Then, this weekend, after the incident had become a national outrage, APD squads used pepper spray to break up a performance by violinists paying tribute to McClain, who loved the instrument, sparking more negative headlines around the globe. And now, three cops with the department have been placed on administrative leave for allegedly reenacting the chokehold that preceded McClain's medical crisis, captured in photos taken at the spot where he died.

If Aurora cops are eventually fired for snapping offensive pics rather than killing an innocent black man, the irony will be visible from outer space.

The images, whose existence was first divulged by CBS4, have not yet been made public, but Interim Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson — a finalist to win the job permanently in the hunt for a replacement for Nick Metz, who retired at the end of 2019 — promises that they will be. In a statement released at 9:58 p.m. on June 29, she says:

Marijuana Deals Near You

Thursday afternoon, I was apprised of allegations reported to Internal Affairs by an Aurora Police Officer alleging multiple Aurora Police officers were depicted in photographs near the site where Elijah McClain died. All involved officers were immediately placed on administrative leave with pay in non-enforcement capacities.

I immediately ordered Internal Affairs to make this investigation their top priority. This accelerated investigation was completed this evening.

This investigation will be publicly released in its entirety promptly upon its conclusion. This will include reports, photographic evidence obtained, officer’s names, and my final determination which can rise to the level of termination.

The photos depict "the carotid restraint, which was used on McClain," according to CBS4. There's no word yet regarding when they were taken or whether Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt and Randy Roedema, the officers involved in the original incident, are seen in them.

Woodyard, Rosenblatt and Roedema were placed on administrative leave after McClain's death, then allowed to return to the streets after District Attorney Dave Young opted against criminal charges — a decision Young continues to defend. However, Woodyard, Rosenblatt and Roedema were assigned to non-enforcement duties last week in order to "protect" them, an Aurora police spokesperson said.

Prior to the June 27 protest, the Party for Socialism and Liberation in Denver, one of the sponsoring organizations, issued the following list of demands:

1. Immediately fire all three APD officers (Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt and Randy Roedema) and both paramedics who actively participated in Elijah's murder.

2. Reopen the case and file criminal charges against all three APD officers and the two paramedics who actively participated in Elijah's murder.

3. Provide immediate restitution to the McClain family, reflecting the incredible injustice committed against them. Do not drag it out any longer, forcing them to repeatedly defend the injustice of the cold-blooded murder of their child.

In a conversation with Westword about a protest over the May 1 police-shooting death of William DeBose, Lillian House, a spokesperson for the Party for Socialism and Liberation, explained the rationale for defunding the police.

"What we're fighting for is an entirely different system," she said. "We want to overthrow the system as it exists now, which has an oppressor class — and without the need to oppress people, there's no need for a police force as it exists today. Whether we'd have community policing is something else, but you couldn't call it police in the same sense as it is now. It would be a completely different institution."

If that happens in Aurora, the police department will deserve no small share of credit for contributing to its own demise. In the meantime, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser is actively investigating McClain's death at the behest of Governor Jared Polis, who ordered the probe last week.

Disney+ adds lost Luke Skywalker scene which Mark Hamill says is crucial for the character - RadioTimes

In a deleted scene now available to watch, the future Jedi wants to join the Empire…

Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope Starring Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, Peter Mayhew, David Prowse

The Star Wars saga is known for cutting or otherwise altering certain scenes in later editions – but what about the scenes that never made it to the screen in the first place, denied their place in movie history?

That was the status of the original introduction to Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, cut from A New Hope (or just Star Wars, if you’re particular about titles) but now available to watch on Disney Plus.

And Hamill has revealed that the scene, which sees Luke watch Darth Vader’s attack on Princess Leia’s ship from Tatootine before heading to Tosche Station (you know, for the power converters) is one he was pretty gutted to lose when the film was first released.

“There a couple of things that are good for the character,” told Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo on their Instagram live series Russo Bros. Pizza Film School.

“No. 1, he is ridiculed roundly by his peers. So he’s not particularly cool or popular. Koo Stark is the only other female actor in the movie… and she calls me ‘Wormie’. So I am not popular.

“And then I bump into Biggs Darklighter, played by Garrick Hagon, and I go ‘Wow!’ You can see we’re good friends. He’s dressed in an Imperial uniform and I’m going, ‘Wow! That’s so great! I can’t wait until I can get off the dump of a planet and join with you.’

“And he takes me outside and says, ‘Luke, as soon as I get the chance, I am going to jump ship and join the Rebels.'”

In other words, yes, Luke was ready to go wings up in a TIE Fighter and barbecue some Rebel Scum if it meant getting off Tatooine, changing his mind when he saw the true evil of the Empire in action. Or at least that would have been the narrative, if the scene hadn’t been cut.

“The only reason that is interesting to me is that Luke has no political persuasion,” Hamill explained.

“He thinks it’s great he is in the Empire! Luke wants to be in the Empire if it will get him off the farm! So he is completely pure in that he is not politically motivated in any way, shape or form.”

In other words, Luke had to get woke or go broke – and now fans can see that struggle in all its undeleted glory.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K now, as well as on Disney Plus, Sky Cinema Premiere and NOW TV.

You can sign up to Disney Plus for £5.99 a month or £59.99 a year.

Konecranes receives crane order from Port of South Louisiana - Port Technology International

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

Konecranes has announced that it has received an order for two Konecranes Gottwald Model 6 Portal Harbor Cranes from the Port of South Louisiana.

In a statement, Konecranes said the cranes will be delivered to the port’s public facility, Globalplex Intermodal Terminal (Globalplex), where they will be used to handle containerised and bulk cargo.

Discover Konecranes’ solutions for ports and terminals by exploring its AIS portal

The Port of South Louisiana is America’s largest tonnage sea gateway for international trade. With increased throughput tonnage and the need for efficiency, Globalplex, located in Reserve, Louisiana and on the east bank of the Mississippi River, saw the need for new, updated equipment.

Credit: Konecranes

Konecranes will be providing the required high-performance and extremely robust port equipment that would handle the large cargo volume and years of continuous use.

“Acquiring these cranes is an important addition to our port” said Paul Aucoin, Executive Director for the Port of South Louisiana.

“The Port of South Louisiana is committed to maintaining and expanding our infrastructure capabilities to keep the port competitive and efficient in the global market.”

Their two new cranes will be Konecranes Gottwald Portal Harbor Cranes in the G HSK 6548 B four-rope variant, with a maximum lifting capacity of 125 tonnes.

These flexible machines offer the potential for continuous-duty bulk material handling or heavy project cargo, but the order also includes a boom-top cable reel to operate electric spreaders for container handling. Included are smart crane features such as hoisting-height and working-range assistants and cargo-hold totalizer.

Furthermore, web reporting and remote desktop control utilize the latest technology that add ergonomics, efficiency and safety to crane operation and performance.

Mounted on customized portals, the cranes will use the existing rail infrastructure. In order to minimize downtime, the order includes a large spare part package so that maintenance and some repairs can be completed quickly by their own technicians.

“We’ve taken the time to build a good customer relationship, and you can see the results,” said Alan Garcia, Sales Manager, Americas, Konecranes Port Solutions.

“After two years working on this challenging project, it’s very satisfying to achieve what we set out to do. We hope to continue working with both Port of South Louisiana and Globalplex long into the future.”

Peep Show blackface scene removed from Netflix but remains on C4 - BBC News

A Peep Show scene in which Robert Webb's character Jez wears blackface make-up has been removed from Netflix.

But the scene from series two of the hit sitcom can still be seen on Channel 4's streaming service All 4.

Channel 4 said it didn't think "erasing our creative history is a quick fix for the issues affecting our society".

In the scene, which also features Jez's girlfriend Nancy (Rachel Blanchard), Jez says: "It just feels almost wrong. Are you sure this isn't racist?"

Nancy replies: "We're breaking a taboo, of course it feels wrong. We've got boundaries to smash, Jeremy."

The series originally ran from 2003 to 2015. A spokesperson for the channel said the programmes in its streaming archive span more than 30 years, and it is reviewing the way it handles old shows.

'A complex issue'

They said: "Many shows reflect the time they were made and some contain content which could now be regarded as inappropriate.

"It is a complex issue particularly when it relates to programmes that satirised, commented on or challenged a specific moment in our culture that is no longer relevant to audiences today.

"We understand the strong feelings provoked by some of this content but we do not believe that erasing our creative history is a quick fix for the issues affecting our society today.

"Channel 4 is committed to inclusion and diversity and opposes discrimination in any form and therefore, having reflected deeply on this subject, we are undertaking a review of the principles governing how we handle historic programmes across our platforms."

Netflix declined to comment. Many platforms are re-evaluating their offerings following mass protests against racism after the death of George Floyd in police custody.

Gone With The Wind was temporarily removed from HBO Max, but has now been reinstated alongside a disclaimer saying the Oscar-winning 1939 film "denies the horrors of slavery".

UKTV said it would do something similar with an episode of 1970s comedy Fawlty Towers, re-adding The Germans episode with a warning about "offensive content and language".

Meanwhile, 30 Rock's Tina Fey apologised for blackface appearing in several episodes of the hit sitcom and asked for them to be removed.

Matt Lucas and David Walliams apologised for their use of blackface after two of their series, Little Britain and Come Fly With Me, were removed from circulation.

Leigh Francis also apologised for using masks to dress up as black celebrities such as Trisha Goddard, Craig David and Melanie B on the Channel 4 show Bo Selecta.

And Ant and Dec have said sorry for impersonating people of colour on Saturday Night Takeaway.

The Beauty of the Impossible Nintendo Switch Port - PCMag.com

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com
The Witcher 3

I don’t think Sniper Elite 3 is a fantastic game. The parts that work are the ones that clearly received the most effort and attention: the countless opportunities for players to snipe Nazis from creative vantage points and watch the resulting slow-mo carnage. But that singular focus only serves to make the rest of the stealth game surrounding it seem that much more uninspired. It’s not something I would normally be interested in for very long.

However, because Sniper Elite 3 is on the Nintendo Switch, I’ve played far more of the game than I would have otherwise, taking potshots on the train during the morning commute (when I still had those) or in between weekend errands. The open-world North Africa levels may seem like a poor man’s Metal Gear Solid V, but that still looks nice and runs pretty smooth on the small screen. It’s just cooler and more impressive in this form.

With more publishers now quenching the Switch port thirst with modified versions of cutting-edge and technically demanding AAA console games, I’ve reached a conclusion: Just because a game may look worse on Nintendo Switch doesn’t mean it’s a worse version.

Wild Hunt

There's a kind of hardcore gamer condescension to the idea that you should only play The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (or any AAA port) on Switch if you have no other choice. It fails to consider that by just having a portable option, this version may best fit into some folks’ lives. Obviously, people are free to have whatever gaming preferences they like, but these days I praise Nintendo not just for its games, but because it keeps doing things that don't align with these increasingly rigid priorities about the One True Way To Play.

A video game culture that prioritizes graphics and raw quantitative technical specs above anything else is prone to ignoring other, more experiential benefits you may gain from giving up some of those specs. It’s the classic example of trading the strength of a gaming PC for the convenience of a console. The uniquely underpowered yet portable Switch makes this continuum even more extreme. Would you trade the dream of the most premium, yet isolated and time-consuming gaming experience possible for something more modest that fits into your busy life and lets you play more games on average? It's the same reason why Labo VR on Switch won me over, despite weak specs; it was something real people could theoretically use.

Everyone has different values and limits for what they’re willing to trade off. I don’t have a problem with ambitious ports of Burnout Paradise, Doom, Journey to the Savage Planet, Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, Wolfenstein, or 2K’s Bioshock, Borderlands, and XCOM collections on Switch. However, I found the poor, pre-patch performance in, say, Bloodstained, Mutant Year Zero, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, or The Outer Worlds on Switch too much to bear.

For another example, consider A Hat in Time (published by Humble, owned by the same company that owns PCMag). The crowdfunded 3D mascot platformer always seemed like a perfect fit for a system that literally has Mario on it. Because the game ran on Unreal Engine 3, as opposed to its more flexible successor Unreal Engine 4, the developers at Gears for Breakfast originally maintained that a Switch port was “impossible.” A similar problem plagued the Switch port of Rocket League at first.

It turns out that wasn’t the case. A Hat in Time is now on Switch and the game is better for it. Does it look quite as good? No. The game’s art style constantly threatens to tip over into generic if not for truly bizarre details like a planet of mobsters and a war between two bird movie studios. I experienced some hitches, as well. Still, compared to something like Yooka-Laylee, the scale and creativity of these sandboxes along with your hat-based (sorry, Cappy) platforming tools for playing in them are simply joyous. On Switch, in my case the Switch Lite, you can enjoy these big worlds in bite-sized pieces thanks to the formula Super Mario 64 already laid down almost 25 years ago.

Power Versus Flexibility

Someone else might feel differently about different examples. Some may also care more about the cost of physical cartridges keeping these ports of old games at higher prices than on competing platforms—the dreaded Switch tax. But for me, and surely others based on the Switch's success, the added ability of easy and frictionless quick portable play is more often than not a bigger material benefit than some extra technical fidelity. I rarely notice or care about those flaws unless I’m watching a (however fascinating) Digital Foundry video on frame rate and resolution. I'm not saying I don't also enjoy seamlessly switching to the TV and using a pro controller. I'm just saying being completely tethered to a TV is a compromise, too. Folks just aren't as used to realizing that.

An objective difference in graphical quality doesn’t mean an objective difference in overall quality if those drawbacks allow for a version in a form players may honestly enjoy more. I’m not playing Dragon Quest XI on Switch because I’m some poor soul with no other options. I work in an office surrounded by some of the beefiest PC gaming rigs on the market. I have the current most powerful console in the world, the Xbox One X, which now makes a Taco Bell noise

No, I genuinely prefer playing Dragon Quest XI on Switch because I just like the cool intimacy of holding a huge world anywhere in my hands. Handheld gaming has real, proven value. There's an entire new nifty retro machine, the Analogue Pocket, dedicated to celebrating the history of handheld play. So I appreciate the Switch bringing those strengths to games you wouldn't expect, even if it has to make some sacrifices along the way.

That's also why I love playing The Witcher III: Wild Hunt on the handheld. Having heard the highest praise for this game for years, my expectations were pretty steep. When I first started playing I couldn’t stop hearing Geralt as Solid Snake and noticing all the gameplay systems these later Assassin’s Creed RPGs ripped off. I also couldn’t stop admiring the exquisite character writing, deep action role-playing mechanics, shockingly fleshed-out Gwent card game side mode, and lush open fantasy worlds to explore for hours and hours. Yes, lush worlds to explore, even on Switch where it’s an uglier yet clearly recognizable (and nicely stable) version of the same massive game.

You can see how The Witcher slots in nicely with similar expansive fantasy epics in the Switch’s portfolio like Skyrim, Xenoblade, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The appeal of portable play that publishers and players alike saw in those games applies to The Witcher as well, even if Geralt’s luscious white hair is a little blurrier when it bounces as you watch him get out of the tub. It’s details like those that make the gigantic file size of this (and basically every game mentioned in this article) worth it. A later update even lets you transfer your save file between Switch and PC, so there's truly nothing to lose.

Another prominent AAA Switch port, Overwatch, is a bit of a trickier proposition. And not just because buying the popular hero shooter means tacitly supporting Blizzard’s past controversial decisions surrounding China. Overwatch is a twitchy multiplayer shooter that requires a constant online connection. So, you can’t whip it out on a bus. While I haven’t yet experienced any technical issues while playing the game, other writers have, including entire colorful character models going missing in the middle of a match. Hopefully patches have helped. Plus, esports players more hardcore than me are more likely to care about wonkier voice chat and the bump down to 30 FPS, even if the added motion controls makes shooting more precise compared to a controller.

Despite those caveats, the Switch has made me more motivated to casually play Overwatch for the first time since launch three years ago, and not just because I wound up liking some of the new characters I missed out on, like the cowgirl and the hamster. As the Wii U proved, a handheld device has its positives even when you can’t exactly take the device anywhere. Off-TV play on the GamePad to me was the biggest selling point of the doomed system, because I often found it more comfortable to play in bed or lying down on a couch as opposed to sitting at attention in front of a TV. The Switch obviously has far more freedom than the Wii U. So, even with its internet requirements, Overwatch also gains a subjective but real qualitative gameplay benefit from being on Switch. I reject the idea that it’s inherently inferior across the board.

Any Port in a Storm

I understand why some people prefer that their Switch games have no differences compared to versions on other systems. That's the ideal situation. Obviously, Nintendo first-party exclusives don’t have this issue. Those Switch ports without compromises do exist, typically in the smaller indie space. The brilliant, brain-contorting, lo-fi murder puzzle game Return of the Obra Dinn on Switch is the same acclaimed game that launched on PC last year, now on a handheld. Another smooth translation is Ruiner, a slick little top-down shooter oozing with dirty, futuristic cyberpunk production value in its moody city and junkyard battlegrounds.

It's also totally valid that some people would just rather not play certain games on Switch when there are alternatives they consider superior, especially if they have zero interest in portable play. The upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will make the gulf in power even more difficult to deal with unless Nintendo releases an enhanced Switch of its own. Ports may dry up. Overwatch 2 is coming to Switch but Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red’s Witcher follow-up, probably won’t.

Still, even when parity isn’t possible, I just want to tell the developers (and contractors like Iron Galaxy, Panic Button, and Virtuous) attempting the impossible that their efforts are worthwhile. They aren't just making a worse product to cash in on a trend. For players like me, sometimes shrinking down a game can have big potential new benefits.

Port 251 now open in Rehoboth Beach - CapeGazette.com

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

A restaurant owner has never been as excited about a delivery as Joe Maggio was when he realized the two kegs being delivered to Port 251, his new Rehoboth Beach restaurant, were the Italian sparkling cocktail Sera Luce Venetian Spritz.

“We’re going to be the only one in town with that on the menu,” said Maggio excitedly. “We’re all about the bubbles here.”

Port 251 is a joint venture between Maggio and Tony Sacco, who are both local realtors. Maggio said he was in Florence, Italy, last summer for an engagement party when, he said, he was struck by the idea of opening an aperitivo bar in Rehoboth.

“This was something we needed in Rehoboth,” he said.

Port 251 is is located on the triangular lot at the intersection of Rehoboth and Lake avenues. Maggio, who previously owned Aqua on Baltimore Avenue, said he’s been eyeing the location for the new restaurant for 15 years.

This is Sacco’s first time owning a restaurant, but he said he’s been interested in partnering with Maggio for some time. He said he almost did about a decade ago, but he and husband William Greene were going through the process of adopting a son, and family was more important.

“I’m at a different stage in my life and I’ve got more time to devote,” said Sacco. “This seemed like a great adventure to take part in.”

Maggio said the idea behind the restaurant is to present diners with tapas from around the world, using as much locally sourced, seasonal produce as possible. It’s like going into a city port and trying the food, he said of the menu, which includes vegan options.

Like many new businesses, the coronavirus changed the opening plans for Port 251. Sacco said there was a grand opening scheduled for April, but he said, having a grand opening when takeout was the only option didn’t seem appropriate.

“Instead, we get to open it during Pride Month,” said Sacco, of the proudly gay-owned restaurant. “We’ve just been rolling with the punches.”

For the time being, Maggio said Port 251 will be serving aperitivos from 3 to 8 p.m., seven days a week. He said beginning in July, hours will be extended to 1 a.m., and there will be a dinner menu introduced.

“It’ll be a place where people can come get a small bite to eat and a drink before going out to dinner, or they can stay for dinner,” said Maggio. “This is going to have a social atmosphere.”

For more information on Port 251, 251 Rehoboth Ave., call 302-278-7069 or go to the restaurant’s Facebook page.

New T-Shirts Celebrates Bay Area's Gay Nightlife Scene - Bay News 9

TAMPA, Fla. — Pride Month may be ending this week, but a special celebration of the Bay area's historic LGBTQ nightlife scene is just beginning.

What You Need To Know

  • T-Shirt collection features logos, names of popular gay bars in the 70s, 80s

  • Collection celebrates El Goya Bar, The Engine Room, The Wedgewood Inn

  • Order t-shirts from the collection at thewowbiz.com

  • More Entertainment stories

The center of downtown Ybor City is home to more than just great food, busy streets, and roosters.

It's also home to an important landmark of the area's LGBTQ history.

At the corner of 7th Avenue and 15th Street, is the home of the former El Goya.

“When this bar opened as El Goya, it put Tampa on the map of being accepting of gays as well,” said Art Smith, founder and designer of The Wow Biz.

“As you were coming of age in the gay world back in the 70s and 80s, you didn’t have the social atmosphere that you have now," Smith explained. "So in order to meet other people and feel accepted and not have people look at you strangely because you were hugging someone of the same gender, these were our homes. These were the center of our social life."

El Goya and dozens of other bars and clubs just like it here in Tampa Bay and around the country may no longer exist physically. But it’s what they left behind that’s fueled the passion for Smith’s latest design project.

“This kind of helps revive those memories- you see the logos, you see the designs,” said Smith.

Logos we haven’t seen in 30, 40, 50 years are now front and center on these "throwback" t-shirts Smith is making to commemorate history.

“It’s an important thing to have that history available for people, because young people don’t realize what we went through in those days,” said Robert Pope, former owner of The Engine Room and The Wedgewood Inn.

Pope looks at photos of his bars with fond memories, but some not so fond ones also.

He says his bars were constantly raided in the 70s for the simple fact that they were homosexual establishments.

When asked why Pope continued to operate his businesses under such difficult circumstances, Pope has a simple, straightforward answer.

“Because the gay community deserved to be treated like everybody else,” said Pope.

It’s a fight still being fought today, and that fight is part of what drives Smith's t-shirt project.

“It is, just like any other history project, people like to remember where they came from. Whether it’s grandma’s spinning wheel that she used to do her yarn projects on, or it’s a cast iron skillet from your childhood, or it’s a piece of furniture your mother used to have in the living room," he explained. "People like to have things to remind them of their history, and in the gay world there isn’t a lot of that."

Except this time, it doesn’t have to be a secret.

“To me, that’s a big part of how we got to have gay marriage, how we got to have more protections under the law, is because there were 50 or 100 years of struggle step-by-step, and these bars play a part in that struggle,” said Smith. “It’s a big part of history that many people don’t hear about.”

Check out the t-shirt designs at thewowbiz.com.

Why A Deleted Luke Skywalker Scene Still Bothers Mark Hamill To This Day - CinemaBlend

While Mark Hamill understands why this scene was cut from the A New Hope, as he sees it, Luke Skywalker being introduced in this way was more organic than what we got in the finalized version of A New Hope. Sure, the movie does a decent job of establishing Luke’s life as a farm boy on a desert planet, but by taking out Luke observing the space battle and interacting with his friends, you get less of an idea of where his headspace is at before C-3PO and R2-D2 enter his life and inadvertently push him into taking his first steps into a larger world.

‘Port cargo volume to contract 5-8% in FY21’ - The Hindu

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

The outbreak of COVID-19 and the extended lockdowns have adversely impacted the Indian port sector and cargo volumes would see a contraction of 5 to 8% in FY21, ICRA Ratings said in a report.

Though the sector remained operational during this period, the adverse impact on domestic economic activity as well as slowdown in global trade has led to a reduction in cargo volumes at major ports, it said.

Similar to the 22% decline in April 2020, May 2020 also saw a 22% decline in throughput. While, the decline was across major cargo categories, POL, thermal coal and container segments witnessed a significant contraction, it added.

Ankit Patel, vice-president and co-head, ICRA Ratings, said: “The recovery in the port sector will be contingent on the pace of recovery of the domestic industrial activity and the global economy.” “Further, factors like changes in global supply chain pattern during the recovery phase will also have an impact on the cargo profile. Of late, anti-China sentiment has also been building up momentum, which could also be a headwind for the trade growth.” he added.

ICRA said full-year outlook for the sector remains negative and recovery among the cargo segments should be relatively better for essential products such as POL and thermal coal, while for segments like coking coal and containers, recovery may be long drawn.

While the general cargo throughput may witness 5-8% contraction for FY21, the container segment may witness a decline of 12-15% during the same period, ICRA said.

It said due to the invocation of force majeure clauses at major ports, the project implementation of Sagarmala and other port projects may witness delays by at least six to 12 months.

Further, since the projects are mainly driven by the private sector, given the steep economic contraction, many discretionary capex plans may be further postponed.

On the credit profile of port companies, K. Ravichandran, senior VP and group head, ICRA Ratings, said “The credit profile of port sector companies is expected to witness pressure in the near to medium term, due to the impact of COVID-19 outbreak and the subsequent lockdown imposed.”

“Further, entities that have recently commenced operations or concluded debt-funded capacity expansions or have concentrated cargo profile like containers could come under severe pressure,” he said.

“Nonetheless, well diversified players (cargo-wise) and SPVs promoted by stronger sponsors should have higher financial flexibility to weather this downturn and their debt servicing is unlikely to be materially impacted,” he added.

Wind port can be economic driver for region that needs one | Opinion - nj.com

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

By Christina M. Renna

Earlier this month, Gov. Phil Murphy and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) unveiled an exciting, new plan to build a “wind port” in southern New Jersey.

Once completed, the port would be the nation’s first purpose-built port to manufacture and ship offshore wind-energy components. This would position the state, and specifically its location in Salem County, to become the East Coast hub of the wind power industry, one of the fastest growing in the United States.

The Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey (CCSNJ), on behalf of the state’s seven southernmost counties, applauds this outstanding economic opportunity for the region.

Not only would the port help New Jersey meet the Murphy administration’s ambitious clean-energy goals, it can also support up to 1,500 permanent, high-quality manufacturing, assembly, and operations jobs. Incredibly, port planners expect to generate up to approximately $500 million of new economic activity every year.

This project comes to South Jersey at a critical time. Salem County’s unemployment rate has risen from a pre-pandemic level of 5.3% to a recent 15.6% percent, with no indication when this upward trend will end. However, Salem County’s employment and economic issues did not start with the pandemic. Prior to COVID-19, the county lagged in all measurable economic indicators since the 2008 recession. There has never been a community that needed such a substantial and important economic development project.

The port would be situated on the eastern shore of the Delaware River in Lower Alloways Creek Township, adjacent to PSEG’s Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Station. PSEG has historically driven job opportunities as the largest employer in Salem County, so it is no surprise they are a partner in this landmark project. The state is lucky to have a partner in PSEG that is well-versed in project development and able to support such an ambitious undertaking.

The CCSNJ is proud to join a loud chorus of supportive business, labor and elected officials from both sides of the political aisle who understand the need for critical development projects, opportunities for the wind industry to grow in New Jersey and, more importantly, the direct correlation the port can have on economic growth, quality of life and environmental protection.

Savannah Ranks As Top US Port For Ag Exports - Southeast Produce Weekly

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

The Port of Savannah’s proximity to major producers, direct access via road and rail, broad global network and responsiveness to customer needs have recently made it the top port in the nation for the export of containerized agricultural goods.

“Agriculture is a major driver for Georgia’s economy, contributing $74 billion in annual economic benefit and nearly 400,000 jobs across the state,” Gov. Brian Kemp said. “As this country’s No. 1 port for the export of agricultural products, Savannah provides vital support for the state and nation, helping our farmers reach overseas buyers efficiently.”

In 2019, agriculture accounted for 60% of Savannah’s exports, or more than 843,000 twenty-foot equivalent container units. Forest products such as wood pulp, paper and logs made up the largest category of goods, followed by clay, cotton, poultry and peanuts.

For the fiscal year to date (July 2019-May 2020), total loaded exports have increased by 15,500 twenty-foot equivalent container units to 1.33 million TEUs.

“The production of raw material and agricultural goods, along with their supply chains, have remained strong throughout the pandemic,” Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch said. “The powerful commitment by the agricultural sector mirrors that of GPA’s employees, the International Longshoremen’s Association and the rest of our maritime logistics community.”

During the pandemic, GPA has focused on ensuring both chassis and empty containers are available to support the movement of export commodities. Through its association with the South Atlantic Chassis Pool II and the completion of a new on-terminal chassis yard, the Port of Savannah provides customers with access to the largest chassis pool in the Southeast. In addition, GPA’s team has focused on cargo owners and other contacts to ensure a reliable supply of containers.

On-terminal projects to expand export capacity have continued throughout the crisis, including the Mason Mega Rail, with the first nine of 18 new working tracks complete and two new rail-mounted gantry cranes slated to begin work in July.

GPA’s inland terminal, the Appalachian Regional Port, has seen increased volumes and export commodities coming from northwest Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. At the Port of Savannah, GPA has increased its on-time performance of vessel operations to achieve its best performance in three years.

“GPA’s laser focus on the seamless flow of export commodities and the impressive growth at the ARP have created new avenues for American farmers to serve international customers,” GPA Board Chairman Will McKnight said.

On June 24, Lynch addressed a webinar of more than 125 ag exporters, members of the Agriculture Transportation Coalition, which advocates on transportation policy as it impacts U.S. farmers. The largest organization of its kind, AgTC members include agriculture exporters and importers, freight forwarders, agriculture trade associations, and the state departments of agriculture.

“For our members, the cost-effective movement of goods is a key factor in the profitability of farm and processor operations,” Executive Director of AgTC Peter Friedmann said. “Working with the leadership of the nation’s international gateways, such as Port of Savannah, serves mutual interests of the port and ag exporters in growing cargo volumes. We look forward to expanding these relationships, and appreciate Mr. Lynch’s most effective dialogue with our members this week.”

Lynch was joined for the question and answer portion of the webinar by GPA Chief Operating Officer Ed McCarthy and Chief Commercial Officer Cliff Pyron.

“We were pleased to have such a productive discussion with the AgTC members,” Lynch said. “Savannah’s longtime service to commodity exporters and extensive on-terminal infrastructure for refrigerated goods makes GPA a strong partner for the agricultural community.”
