Bomb squad called to scene of July standoff, firefighters find man injured in boarded-up house - Salt Lake Tribune

A man was injured at a South Jordan house that was the scene of a July standoff that resulted in the owner’s arrest for allegedly stockpiling explosives.

Ryan Lynn McManigal was charged in July with attempted murder and felony use of a weapon of mass destruction. Officers reportedly found 20 pounds of explosives in the home. His home has been boarded-up since his arrest, according to South Jordan Fire Department Deputy Chief Ryan Lessner.

Lessner said firefighters were called to McManigal’s home at 4 p.m. this afternoon for reports of a structure fire. They didn’t find a fire, but did find a man with significant injuries to his lower legs, Lessner said. The injured man was transported to University of Utah Hospital. Lessner said he didn’t know who the man was or why he was in the house.

The two houses adjacent to McManigal’s house were evacuated and a bomb squad was brought to the scene. Lessner said police and the bomb squad are investigating how the man found at the house was injured and making sure nothing in the house poses a future threat. Lessner said he is not concerned about danger to residents. However, officials will remain on scene throughout the night, he said.

From port to fort: 841st Transportation Battalion | News - Berkeley Independent

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

Joint Base Charleston has a variety of different missions executed by every military branch. The 841st Transportation Battalion is one Army unit that works closely with Joint Base Charleston to support the warfighter and help deliver cargo to wherever it needs to go.

Specifically for this mission, U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Will Twigg, a reservist assigned to the 841st Transportation Battalion, verifies equipment as it comes off the cargo vessel and ensures that it is staged in the appropriate areas for easy port clearance.

“We’re the ones that are doing the tallying and receiving of tally sheets which allows us to reconcile the accounts, and make sure that all documentation is in order to execute a download or upload,” said Twigg.

Port clearance is the final phase in which the 841st TB has 10 business days to get the cargo cleared from Joint Base Charleston’s Naval Weapons Station TC dock.

In June, the battalion alone moved over 4,000 pieces of cargo in 30 days.

“It’s a phenomenal amount of work that was put in by not only military green suitors, but also by Department of the Army civilian employees that work very hard here,” said Twigg.

It is essential that all the work done by the battalion is efficient and orderly. For U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Blake Interdonato, a reservist assigned to the 841st Transportation Battalion, this rings true.

“We deliver the best product that we can to that unit,” said Interdonato. “If something does not get booked correctly or logged where it’s supposed to go, that piece of equipment goes from being $2,000 to move, maybe could go upwards to $10,000 to get that one piece of equipment to its proper destination.”

The battalion plays a crucial role in delivering equipment and cargo from any eastern sea port.

“It’s a huge responsibility,” said Interdonato. “We take that responsibility very seriously and we come to work every day to give it our best.”

The 841st TB is just one mission partner here that strengthens Joint Base Charleston’s sea capabilities.

“Our mission set is to move cargo from the port to the fort, and the fort to the port to support the warfighter,” said Twigg.

Goodwill signs agreement with Port of Wilmington operator for temp jobs with the potential to become permanent positions - delawarebusinessnow.com

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

GT USA Wilmington the marine terminal owner/operator at the Port of Wilmington, entered into an agreement with Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County to provide temporary staffing services for placing up to 100 laborers, warehouse logistics and clerical workers at the Port of Wilmington, beginning November 1.

The staff will support the union membership in moving cargo through the port during peak periods.

Under the agreement, Goodwill Staffing Services, a program of Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County, is partnering with GT USA Wilmington to provide the local community workforce exposure to the port and the potential to join the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) union ranks should they reach sufficient qualifying hours.

Eric Casey, CEO, GT USA Wilmington said “GT USA Wilmington is linking with Goodwill to ensure we avoid any labor shortages going into a busy fruit season. It is our hope that this partnership will provide the right people for these temporary jobs, which we believe will be a roadmap towards union membership, strengthening the ILA and its growth. It will hopefully provide a pool of workers downstream to be pulled upstream into the ranks of the union.

Casey continued, “GT USA Wilmington has already begun permitting processes to commence construction in Edgemoor – a new semi-automated container terminal. This project is expected to make a major improvement in the local economy of Delaware by increasing the amount of cargo flowing through the region. This develops a need to start developing talent with our union partners and third-party groups, to create a pipeline of skilled workers able to fill the union roles this development will demand.”

Since taking over operations at the Port, GT USA Wilmington has invested in equipment, and IT systems, reconfigured and optimized the existing facilities to allow for new growth. GTUSAW is in the process of almost doubling container storage facilities as well as increasing refrigerated cargo warehouse space to over 1 million square feet

“Our team is excited to partner with GT USA Wilmington to meet their current and projected temporary employment needs, while directly advancing the employment of Delawareans,” shared Colleen Morrone, CEO of Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County. “Since 1921 our Goodwill has served the Delaware community through job training and placement programs, securing employment and a path to self-sufficiency for thousands of our neighbors. As we embark upon the first of our next 100 years, we’re well positioned to provide GT USA Wilmington and the ILA with a skilled and digitally literate temporary workforce, and also support their long-term job training needs as their operations expand in the Port of Wilmington and in Edgemoor, Delaware.”

Assailant in Lyon shoots priest, flees scene, French police source says - Haaretz.com

A Greek Orthodox priest was shot and injured on Saturday at a church in the centre of the French city of Lyon by an assailant who then fled, a police source and witnesses said.

The priest was fired on twice at around 4 P.M. (1500 GMT) as he was closing the church, and he was being treated on site for life-threatening injuries, the source said.

Witnesses said the church was Greek Orthodox. Another police source said the priest was of Greek nationality, and had been able to tell emergency services as they arrived that he had not recognised his assailant.

The incident came two days after a man shouting "Allahu Akbar!" (God is Greatest) beheaded a woman and killed two other people in a church in Nice. Two weeks ago, a schoolteacher in a Paris suburb was beheaded by an 18-year-old attacker who was apparently incensed by the teacher showing a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad during a class.

While the motive for Saturday's attack was not known, government ministers had warned that there could be other Islamist militant attacks. President Emmanuel Macron has deployed thousands of soldiers to protect sites such as places of worship and schools.

Prime Minister Jean Castex, who was visiting Rouen, said he was heading back to Paris to assess the situation.

The Nice attack took place on the day Muslims celebrate the Prophet Mohammad's birthday. Many Muslims around the world have been angered about France's defence of the right to publish cartoons depicting the Prophet.

A third person has been taken into police custody in connection with that attack, a police source said on Saturday. The suspected assailant was shot by police and remained in critical condition in hospital.

Port: How to get your news without Twitter or Facebook - The Dickinson Press

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

Those are the words of Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, spoken at a recent congressional hearing featuring the heads of internet giants Google, Facebook, and Twitter. It was that last company's CEO, Jack Dorsey, who was the target of Cruz's ire.

Whatever your opinion of Cruz, or congressional kabuki theater generally, he has a point.

Twitter, specifically, decided for its millions and millions of readers that a recent New York Post story about the questionable business dealings of presidential candidate Joe Biden's family shouldn't be read. Twitter and Facebook went to extraordinary lengths to suppress the story, claiming variously that it wasn't reliable or based on hacked information.

Since when do we need these tech giants to protect us from journalism?

Newsletter signup for email alerts

We never asked them to do that, but they're doing it anyway, and as for Cruz's who-put-you-in-charge inquiry, the answer is us.

We gave them this power.

But we can take it back. Those tech giants may stand astride vast swaths of the internet, making them seem almost unavoidable at times, but it is possible to access news and information about the word without relying on their algorithms or editorial choices to effectively censor what we see.

As you might imagine, I read a lot of news, but I don't get it from Facebook or Twitter. I don't pay much attention to those platforms at all.

I use a technology called RSS feeds to follow the topics and publications I'm interested in. I subscribe to these free feeds, and they bring all the news I want to read to one convenient place for me without any filtering.

You can do it too. It requires a little setting up, but letting Facebook and Twitter do that work for us is how we got into this mess.

The first thing you need to do is find a feed reader. You have a lot of choices. Most of them are cloud-based these days, meaning you log into a website through a browser and read your news that way. I use a service called Feedly, myself, but you can explore others to see what works for you.

Once you have your reader picked out, you start curating a list of sources you'd like to read. They aren't advertised well, but most news-style websites publish an RSS feed.

Our company, Forum Communications, publishes them, and you can find the link at the bottom of our pages. Or you can punch the URL of the news site you want to follow into a reader like Feedly and they'll find the RSS link for you.

Once you have your list of sources created, start reading, confident that the only person involved in filtering what you're reading is you.

The Fladgate Partnership Announces: 1994 Vintage Port Special-Edition Set - wineindustryadvisor.com

Taylor Fladgate and Fonseca Re-Release 100-Point 1994 Classic Vintage Ports
Just In Time for the Holidays

NEW YORK– October 27, 2020  As one of the ultimate gift options for this holiday season, The Fladgate Partnership is excited to offer a special edition giftbox of re-released Taylor Fladgate 1994 Classic Vintage Port and Fonseca 1994 Classic Vintage Port. These Ports, which were stored and aged in their respective cellars for 25 years, received a perfect 100-points score and shared the number-one position on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list in 1997. Only 300 giftboxes of this special set (375ml each; SRP: $299) will be available in the U.S. beginning this November.

This rare two-bottle set makes for a 100-point gift for the wine collector in your life. According to Adrian Bridge, CEO of The Fladgate Partnership, “1994 was a textbook year in the vineyard, with low yields and moderate temperatures throughout the season, which made incredible Port with a freshness of fruit that was in character with the 1963s and 1912s.”

TAYLOR FLADGATE 1994 VINTAGE PORT

(20.5% ABV, 375ml)

The Taylor Fladgate 1994 Vintage Port is a deep crimson and displays some maturity on the rim. The explosive fruitiness of early youth is now more restrained as the wine begins to settle into maturity, but the nose is still driven by impressive, focused blackberry and blackcurrant aromas set off by the classic Taylor Fladgate scent of violets. This Vintage Port is full-bodied with a well-structured palate, delivering rich blackberry and cassis flavors with spicy, fig, licorice flavors, evolving on the long and sumptuous finish.

FONSECA 1994 VINTAGE PORT

(20.5% ABV, 375ml)

The Fonseca Vintage 1994 Port is a dark red with dense blackcurrant fruit, an incredible balance of fine fruit and first hints of bottle maturity. On the palate it is very full, with lots of fine tannins that carry loads of fresh blackcurrant fruit. It still holds its youth today – a testament of how extraordinary this vintage is, and the capacity it has to continue to age for the rest of this century.

Port of San Diego says 'too soon' to know when cruises will return - 10News

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the CDC has issued guidance for the cruise ship industry to reopen during the pandemic, the Port of San Diego says it's too soon to tell when the industry would restart locally.

Friday, the CDC urged a "phased approach" to reopening the industry that has been largely shuttered since April following a no-sail order due to the pandemic.

Adam Deaton, Port of San Diego cruise business representative, told ABC 10News that the port will have to coordinate with cruise companies on what their next steps will be.

"It is too soon to say how soon sailing could resume in San Diego. Our next steps will be to coordinate with Holland America and Carnival on their plans, as they are the first few cruises on our schedule. Currently, our first scheduled cruise is Dec. 19 with Holland America’s Koningsdam. If any cruise lines request to conduct test sailings in San Diego, we will coordinate with all relevant federal, state and local agencies," Deaton said.

RELATED: CDC offers framework for cruise lines to start sailing again

According to the Port of San Diego, 70 cruises have been canceled during the 2020-21 season. There are currently 77 calls still on schedule for the port.

The CDC says its guidance applies to ships that can carry at least 250 passengers in U.S. waters and operators must demonstrate adherence to testing, quarantine, and isolation, as well as social distancing for passengers and crew members.

Cruise operators would also need to be able to test passengers and crew members on a regular basis. Mock or test voyages may be used to test cruise operators' ability to successfully apply the precautions.

Official: Rifle shell casings found at Breonna Taylor scene - ABC News

The Kentucky attorney general’s office says two long-rifle shell casings were found in and near Breonna Taylor's apartment after a police drug raid that left her dead

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Two long-rifle shell casings were found in and near Breonna Taylor's Louisville apartment after a botched police drug raid that ended in Taylor's death, Kentucky's attorney general said.

It's the first time these specific shell casings have been mentioned by authorities investigating Taylor's death. One of the casings was found by Taylor's sister in her bedroom and the other was found in the parking lot outside the apartment, according to a court filing this week in a criminal case against the sole Louisville police officer charged in connection with the raid.

The FBI has both shell casings “for purposes of testing,” according to the court filing.

Taylor was fatally shot by police on March 13 after they used a narcotics warrant to break down her door. Officers fired 32 rounds after Taylor's boyfriend fired a shot that struck an officer.

The notice of the two shell casings was filed this week by Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s office as exculpatory evidence in fired Officer Brett Hankison's case. Exculpatory evidence is information that could be considered favorable to the defendant.

The one-page filing does not say why the shell casings would be favorable to Hankison's defense. Hankison was dismissed from the Louisville Metro Police Department in June for shooting blindly into the apartment, endangering Taylor's neighbors.

Cameron made no mention of the two long-rifle casings at a September news conference announcing the indictment against Hankison. Cameron said 32 shots were fired by officers at the scene, all from handguns. Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, fired one shot from his handgun, wounding Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly in the leg. Mattingly, and another officer, Myles Cosgrove, returned fire, striking Taylor five times. The shots fired by Hankison did not strike Taylor, according to Cameron.

Walker had previously filed a lawsuit against Louisville police. On Friday, Mattingly countersued for his injury during the raid.

Taylor's sister, who lived in the apartment with Taylor, found one of the long-rifle shell casings behind a storage chest in Taylor's bedroom, according to the court filing. The other was found in the parking lot by a man visiting the complex on March 13, hours after the early morning shooting, according to the filing.

Hankison's attorney, Stewart Matthews, told WDRB-TV in Louisville that he doesn't know where the shell casings came from.

“I don’t know that there is any importance” to them, he said.

In his counterclaim to Walker's lawsuit, Mattingly says he suffered “battery, assault and emotional distress” caused by Walker. Walker told investigators he fired his gun because he didn't know officers were at the door and he thought an intruder was breaking in.

“Mattingly was shot and nearly killed by Kenneth Walker," the officer's attorney, Kent Wicker, said in a news release. “He’s entitled to, and should use the legal process to seek a remedy for the injury that Walker has caused him.”

Mattingly's court filing asserts that he and Cosgrove are protected from being sued because they were performing “discretionary acts in good faith" as police officers. Mattingly asked that Walker's claim against him be dismissed.

Last week, Mattingly said in his first interview with the news media that Taylor “didn't deserve to die” in the raid.

In the counterclaim, Mattingly said when the door was breached, he saw “Walker standing, with gun raised, in a shooting position” and then he shot Mattingly in the thigh. After shooting, “Walker fell to the floor and hid, avoiding being hit by any bullet coming into the residence,” the counterclaim said.

“Tragically, Ms. Breonna Taylor, who had been standing by Walker, was struck by the return gunfire and died of her injuries,” it said.

Seattle's independent music scene limps along, barely. Will it survive the winter? - KUOW News and Information

2020 was going to be a big year for The Black Tones.

The band fronted by Seattle twins Cedric and Eva Walker planned a big tour in support of their debut recording, “Cobain and Cornbread,” inspired by the intersection of their Louisiana heritage and their Northwest upbringing.

“We were supposed do a lot of traveling,” says Eva Walker, the band’s guitarist and lead singer. “Including South by Southwest, our first time there.”

But the coronavirus pandemic put their dreams on hold, as it did for so many in Seattle’s music industry.

When Governor Jay Inslee put social gathering restrictions in place last March, the result was the closure of dozens of local nightclubs, and the immediate cancellation of more than 2,000 shows. Eight months later, with another virus surge, the music sector has no idea when it can reopen for live shows. Many worry it won’t be able to survive the pandemic intact.

Local club owner Denise Burnside vividly remembers her first reaction to the public gathering restrictions.

“Are you effing kidding me?”

Two years ago, Burnside and a partner opened the Clock-Out Lounge on south Beacon Hill, presenting local and touring musicians for a mainly neighborhood clientele.

“We had to close down and lay everybody off,” she says.

But Burnside counts herself among the fortunate club owners.

Clock-Out has a restaurant license, and once King County businesses were cleared for partial reopening in June, the club started serving a takeout menu. But Burnside says they’re only bringing in about 10% of the revenue they had at the beginning of the year.

Like so many small business owners, Burnside has limped along with the help of a federal loan and small grants. A recent survey by the Washington Nightlife and Music Association found that at least 60% of state nightclub owners don’t believe they can hang on past February without a significant infusion of cash. Most of those venues are in King County.

The pandemic is eviscerating a once-thriving multi-billion dollar local industry.

Which is why Cedric and Eva Walker have signed on as advisors to an ambitious new fundraising campaign. Keep Music Live looks to raise more than $10 million for local artists and venues, according to Cedric Walker.

“We’ve been trying to raise money privately,” he says, “but now we want to get the fans involved.”

Fans like Dow Constantine, the King County executive, who allocated almost $1 million dollars in his latest county budget proposal for the beleaguered music industry. While Constantine acknowledges the sector’s financial contributions, he says that’s not the only reason he took the unprecedented step of recommending emergency public funding for nightclubs.

“Yes, it employs people and generates tax revenue and all of that,” Constantine says, “but it provides an experience we don’t get other ways. That may sound flowery, but it’s a fact.”

Constantine has fond memories of Seattle’s lively club scene in the mid- 1990’s. Venues like the Crocodile Club , the OK Hotel, the Comet Tavern and many more, some of them still in existence, helped propel the success of Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. But the Seattle sound sound that drew thousands of aspiring musicians and fans to the area transcended “grunge.”

Everyone from Sir Mix-A-Lot to Sleater-Kinney got a boost from Seattle clubs; record labels like Sub Pop had global reach and helped transform the city from a remote working-class aerospace hub to the hippest place in the world.

And that transformation has contributed to the industry’s current problems. According to Constantine, local artists have been in a bind for several years due to the hot real estate market. Even though clubs have been shuttered for eight months, many are still paying tens of thousands of dollars in monthly rent.

“If a club goes out and a landlord has to look around for a new tenant,” Constantine asks, “are they going to try to find another club operating on a shoestring?”

Meanwhile, local musicians who depended on the clubs for their livelihoods have been trying to hang on to expensive apartments and rehearsal rooms. Nobody has kept a tally, but everyone has stories of friends who’ve relocated.

The Walker twins are fortunate to have day jobs that pay the bills, but they’re trying to maintain some of their music career’s forward momentum. Cedric Walker compares the impact of the pandemic closures to the Great Depression.

“Just like the stock market crash, wham!” he says.

The Black Tones have been doing some live streamed shows online, but Eva Walker says it’s a little bit like performing in a void. Plus, it’s not financially viable in the long run.

“When you fill up a venue with 1,000 people, maybe 2,000 at the Showbox, it’s a nice payday, right?” Walker says. “With these virtual things, you get maybe 30 people streaming in, you’re getting some donations, but it’s not sustainable.”

Plus, both Walker twins say, beyond the pandemic, the political climate in this election season, plus the racial justice uprising, have blunted their creative impulses.

“My creative brain is like, ‘let’s just go in survival mode right now,’” says Eva Walker.

Like so many artists, she hopes the people who’ve turned to music, movies and other online offerings will recognize the valuable role culture plays in times of crisis.

For King County Executive Dow Constantine, the arts have always been more than a frill. He wants lawmakers and business people to understand they’re as essential to our well-being as groceries and Amazon deliveries.

“It’s not a ‘nice-to-have,’ it’s a ‘must-have’,” Constantine says. “Economically and culturally.”

NYPD Searching For Suspect Allegedly Spotted Running From Scene After 17-Year-Old Derek Trucios Was Shot To Death In Brooklyn - CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A Brooklyn family is mourning the loss of their 17-year-old son after he was shot and killed Wednesday in what police believe was an attempted robbery.

CBS2’s John Dias spoke with the family of Derek Trucios, who just celebrated a birthday last week.

His mother was too distraught to speak on camera, but said she cherishes the final moments with her son, like when loved ones threw him a party six days ago in front of their Sunset Park home, three miles from the crime scene.

The family is from Mexico, but said Trucios was born in the United States. He was a junior at Sunset Park High School and wanted to become a doctor.

Police said Trucios and a 16-year-old friend were shot Wednesday near East 26th Street and Foster Avenue in Flatbush after getting into a struggle with a suspect who allegedly tried to rob them.

“It was really fast, pop pop pop pop pop pop pop,” Flatbush resident Kaossa Doumbe told CBS2.

A handgun was left behind on the sidewalk.

“It’s just outrageous and very saddening,” Doumbe added.

Trucios was shot in the face and stomach, and pronounced dead at the hospital. His friend was shot in the hand and is expected to be OK.

Watch John Dias’ Report:

“I was upstairs in my house and I heard two gunshots. So, I ran to the window and I looked outside. There was four guys struggling,” a neighbor told CBS2’s Alice Gainer.

“When I was running down the steps, I heard a couple more shots,” he said. “There was a guy laying on the floor. He was bleeding from the face and also from his stomach.”

The neighbor claims he saw a man run from the scene. That’s who police are looking for.

“A lot of screaming. A lot of pleas for help,” said another neighbor.

Meantime, others in the area are questioning their safety.

“It’s not cool at all. It’s a quiet neighborhood, but being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Flatbush resident Sharod Turner said.

The number of shootings in New York City has increased from 785 at this time last year to 1,577 this year.

Neighbors say enough is enough.

“When will it end? There’s too much blood that’s being shed in the city,” said Flatbush resident Peter Jones.

“Please don’t come back to this neighborhood because we’d like to stay peaceful and quiet,” said Kesha Terry.

At least one neighbor handed over surveillance video to police as the search for the suspect continues.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.

Set the Scene for Movie Night - PRNewswire

DALLAS, Oct. 29, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- It's getting dark earlier, the weather is turning cooler, and staying home is more popular than ever. For many homeowners, the changing season means it's time for a media room update. The first step to creating the perfect space for sports viewing and family movie time is to provide proper lighting. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), the key to media room enjoyment is to eliminate screen glare.

No matter how tasty the snacks and comfortable the seats, glare can ruin the watching experience. Lighting experts from the ALA, recommend layering the room's lighting to produce indirect light. Instead of one single light in the center of the room, using multiple types of lighting that can be separately controlled with a central control system is the best way to achieve optimal viewing conditions.

"One very effective type of lighting is to use recessed downlights on the perimeter of the space, but not above the screen or seating areas," says Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultant for ALA, and associate professor for the University of Kentucky School of Interior Design. "Downlights can be installed with Alzak black trims that become almost invisible when turned on, yet still provide general lighting in the space."

Another glare-reducing layer can be achieved with wall sconces that have an opaque front to only allow light to exit at the top or bottom. If the screen or monitor is located on a wall with shelving, linear LED tape lighting installed in cabinets or bookshelves could be an effective third layer. In this instance, the LED tape can be concealed under the shelves to provide a soft glow without showing the source of the lighting.

"Dimming the tape light around the screen will create a soft glow of light that will eliminate extreme contrast between the screen and the surrounding area and prevent eye fatigue," says Rey-Barreau.

If the thought of installing dimmers and other high-tech or "smart" controls sounds complicated or expensive, think again. Lighting control technology is now very affordable, allowing for many options for modulating and controlling the light level in individual rooms. A master lighting control system can be programmed to create "scenes," which are pre-programmed lighting levels for different situations that can be controlled with wall controls, hand-held controls, and/or a cellular phone.

Controlling light is also critical in the daytime. One easy method to achieve that control is to install motorized shades that coordinate with the lighting control system. The shades can be pre-programmed to be part of the various pre-set lighting scenes. In this instance, the shades can be programmed to close when activating a scene intended to provide lighting for watching the screen.

For more lighting tips, visit a local ALA-member showroom, go online to ALALighting.com, and signup to receive the monthly e-newsletter Bright Ideas. Find ALA on Facebook and Instagram.

Newburyport Community Members Come Together for “Hate Has No Port Here” Campaign - John Guilfoil Public Relations

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com
For immediate release

City Will Launch The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alliance

https://youtu.be/Or8YboAH6Zc

NEWBURYPORT — The City of Newburyport and the First Religious Society UU are pleased to announce the launch of the “Hate Has No Port Here” campaign, as well as the formation of a new city group focused on promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.

“Hate Has No Port Here” launched today with the debut of a video created by the First Religious Society UU, which features city and faith leaders, as well as members of the community, reaffirming the city’s commitment to being an inclusive community that stands together against racism.

The video includes Mayor Donna Holaday, State Rep. James Kelcourse, State Sen. Diana DiZoglio, City Council President Jared Eigerman, City Councilor Afroz Khan, Newburyport Chamber President Frank G. Cousins, Jr. and Ahavas Achim Congregational Leader Alex Matthews reading words of civil rights and other leaders advocating for equality for all.

Following a summer in which the city and country came face-to-face with racism in the days and weeks that followed the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police, the First Religious Society and community leaders banded together to condemn racism and reaffirm that Newburyport is a welcoming and inclusive community.

“In isolation, a single act of racism is unacceptable. What we have seen recently across the nation is a clear sign that our communities need to do more to condemn racism and hate and solidify our standing as safe havens from hate,” said Rev. Rebecca M. Bryan, Minister, First Religious Society, Unitarian Universalist. “In Newburyport, racism was on display when racial epithets were yelled at a black teenager on a downtown street corner, when a man yelled racial slurs at a Black woman and her daughter on the Rail Trail, and during too many other incidents locally and throughout the nation.”

The City of Newburyport will launch the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alliance, which will focus on racial equity issues in the community and carry out a thorough review of city policies, services and ordinances, as well as root out inequities in community systems. The group will develop clear recommendations for change, as well as a system for measuring success.

The Alliance will consist of local political, religious and business leaders, as well as community advocates and citizens.

“This combined effort by so many in our community serves as a reminder that we are strongest when we stand together and condemn the hateful words and actions of those who do not represent our shared values,” Mayor Holaday said. “I’m deeply proud of our city for taking this important step forward in confronting racism and hate in Newburyport.”

The “Hate Has No Port Here” campaign includes signs that residents and businesses can display to show their personal commitment to stamping out racism in Newburyport.

For more information about the campaign, contact Walsh by email at [email protected], or call 978-701-5352.

$3.5 Million Worth of Fake Viagra, Nike and Gucci Seized at Port of LA and Long Beach - NBC Southern California

blogjewishscene.blogspot.com

What to Know

  • Officials said the CBP seized 27,599 shipments of fake items in the 2019 fiscal year that could have made faux-brand dealers $1.5 billion.
  • It was a $100 million increase over the previous year.
  • The merchandise, which was seized last month, has a street value of about $3.5 million.

U.S. Customs officials announced a seizure of 25,000 fake Viagra pills Tuesday at the Los Angeles/Long Beach Seaport, along with more than 5,100 pieces of apparel knockoffs of a wide range of brands including Gucci and Nike, and nearly 930 counterfeit makeup and perfume items.

The merchandise, which was seized last month, has a street value of about $3.5 million, according to Customs and Border Protection officials.

"CBP is committed to detecting, intercepting and seizing contraband and dangerous imports arriving at our Greater Los Angeles Area ports of entry every day,'' said Carlos Martel, the agency's director of field operations in LA. "Not only do counterfeits damage the American economy, such goods can threaten the health and safety of consumers.''

Officers assigned to the seaport worked with import specialists from CBP's consumer products and mass merchandising, apparel, footwear and textiles, and pharmaceuticals, health and chemicals departments to take 31,072 counterfeit products off the market. The goods had arrived in a containerized cargo shipment from China, they said.

Among the clothing and footwear removed from the ship were fake Ferragamo, Moschino, Versace, Balenciaga, Nike Jordans and Air Max wares. There were also cosmetics items that violated MAC and Chanel trademarks, authorities said.

CBP officers and U.S. Homeland Security investigators turned the merchandise over to the Los Angeles Police Department's Anti-Piracy Unit for further investigation on Sept. 21.

"The best way consumers can protect themselves and avoid this type of fraud is to purchase items from legitimate sources only,'' said Donald Kusser, Los Angeles/Long Beach Seaport director. "Consumers should also know that the money they pay for fake products often funds transnational criminal organizations.''
