Venom: Let There Be Carnage is, unquestionably, the campy and absurd sequel we hoped it would be when its trailer debuted. The sequel, directed by Andy Serkis, takes the manic energy on display in the first film’s most well-known sequence and extends it to a whole movie, bringing with it the silver screen debut of Cletus Kassidy/Carnage (Woody Harrelson), one of the best Spider-Man villains. But the thing that will get people talking the most is the film’s post-credit sequence.

It can be easy to overhype these kinds of things, but the post-credits tag is a massive event, with truly huge repercussions. If you’re looking to stay unspoiled, look away now. Otherwise, we’re going to dive in and break down what exactly is happening here and what it means for the future of the Venom franchise.

After the film, Eddie (Tom Hardy) and Venom are on the lam, hiding out in a hotel. As the two watch television, Venom asks Eddie if he’d like to learn more about his species, to which Eddie agrees. The symbiote begins, but then something happens, and the two end up in a seemingly different hotel room with a familiar face on the tube instead. In a fashion similar to the post-credits tag of Spider-Man: Far From Home, JK Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson rants about the death of Mysterio, eventually showing Tom Holland’s Peter Parker on screen. Welcome to the MCU, Eddie and Venom!

How is this possible? You may remember back in 2019 where there was a disagreement between Marvel and Sony about the future of Spider-Man. Eventually, the problem resolved itself (with a drunken assist from Holland), and a deal was formed to keep Spidey under Marvel and Kevin Feige’s umbrella. During these negotiations, it’s probable one of the parties brought up the idea of bringing more of Sony’s Spider-Man properties (including Jared Leto’s Morbius, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter, and Olivia Wilde’s unknown—but most likely—Spider-Woman project) into the MCU. Scenes in the Morbius trailer even implied this, with a graffiti’d poster of Spider-Man and an inexplicable appearance of Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes (a.k.a. Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming). Oh, and there’s the fact we’re getting a bunch of Sony villains (and probably a few Spider-Men!) in No Way Home. The post-credits tag of Let There Be Carnage is the opening salvo of a much larger plan as the Marvel Multiverse continues to take shape. The lingering question is just how did Eddie and Venom arrive?

The answer to that question lies within the events of Loki. It’s important to remember the current timeline of MCU events: WandaVision comes a few weeks after Avengers: Endgame, The Falcon & The Winter Soldier is a few months after WandaVision, Shang-Chi is post-Falcon, Eternals and Far From Home are around the same time (about nine months after Endgame). The only missing piece is Loki.

Time moves differently in the Time Variance Authority, but it’s likely the show’s conclusion—the breaking of the timeline—aligns with the end of Far From Home, allowing for the multiverse to spill into the MCU. We’ll probably get some clarity in No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but for now, we’ll just have to sit with this juicy teaser. As for those who wondered how Marvel would continue to delight and surprise its fans in the wake of Endgame’s conclusion, ponder no longer. It turns out the answer is to go even bigger, as the effects of the Marvel Multiverse are just beginning.

Port of Seattle fires police chief after investigation - Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) — The Port of Seattle has fired its police chief, who had been the subject of a lengthy investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct.

The Seattle Times reports Chief Rod Covey’s termination was announced via email on Thursday.

“The investigation concluded that Chief Covey violated the Port’s Code of Conduct and Human Resources policies,” according to the email, sent by Port Executive Director Steve Metruck. “Port leadership determined that termination was the appropriate discipline. The investigation did not involve any police enforcement activity or interaction with members of the public.”

Covey had been on paid administrative leave since June 2020, when the investigation began. Mike Villa, who has been serving as acting chief of police during that time, will continue in the acting role until a replacment is found.

The Port has declined to comment on the substance of the allegations against Covey, but Port police Officer Yandle Moss said in a lawsuit last summer that Covey had been placed on leave after Moss, who is Black, filed an internal complaint accusing Covey of racial discrimination. Moss, whose suit in King County Superior Court revolved around the Port’s alleged refusal to produce documents related to its investigation of his complaint, settled with the Port in February.

Covey did not immediately respond to questions from the newspaper.

“When you try to touch one thing by itself, you find it hitched to everything in the universe.”

This quote by the Scottish-American naturalist John Muir is often referred to by Rudy Mancke, the University of South Carolina’s naturalist-in-residence and the former host of South Carolina ETV’s long-running series NatureScene. Though the two men were born more than 100 years and an ocean apart, the parallels between their life paths connect them across the ages through a deep love and appreciation for natural spaces.

Like John Muir, Rudy has spent a lifetime exploring and embracing nature, recognizing that everything is connected to everything else. And, also like Muir, Rudy has devoted much of his career to traveling the world as an advocate for the importance of natural places.

Rudy’s professional path emerged in a natural way as he immersed himself in nature and books, learning as much as possible. With his childhood love of the natural world shaping the man he would become, Rudy has taken on the roles of biology and geology teacher, Army medic, museum curator, television and radio host, and USC’s first naturalist-in-residence. Looking back, Rudy says that he never imagined where life would take him.

“I didn’t plan this path. Back in the days when I was coming along, I never thought about finding a job. And I never ever went to college wanting to prepare for a job. The only reason I went to college was that I knew I couldn’t learn about everything I wanted to learn about on my own.”

Now, at age 75, almost every surface of Rudy’s office on the campus of the University of South Carolina is covered with books and natural artifacts, including seedpods, snakeskins, rocks, animal skeletons, and seashells, collected over a lifetime of natural exploration and discovery.

“I recognize the healing properties of being in nature, especially when the man-made world begins to feel overwhelming,” says Rudy. “When everything else is discombobulated, just take a little short walk — I’ve done this all my life — and that’s what I did on television programs for about 25 years. A national series visiting all 50 states, as well as Canada, Costa Rica, Russia, and Ukraine, and all they are is just walks in the woods. And just that is good. But if you know the names of things and the relationships between them, it helps you realize you’re a part of something bigger than yourself.”

Rudy grew up in Spartanburg as the oldest of four children, developing his love for the natural world at a very young age. “I had woods close to me, and so I would spend a lot of time there,” he says. “My mom’s mother was pretty good with medicinal and edible plants, so those stories came to me. And my parents saw me open dead animals — I wasn’t squeamish about blood and gore. I learned a lot of anatomy that way. I liked the whole sphere, and I was insatiable. My parents and teachers encouraged me.”

After Pandemic Pause, Cruise Ship Sailings Return to Port of San Diego

On Oct. 1, the Disney Wonder and Grand Princess will be the first sailings out of San Diego’s B Street Cruise Terminal since the pandemic forced shutdowns in spring 2020

After a lengthy pandemic-related pause, cruise ships – with passengers on board – will once again start sailing in and out of the Port of San Diego Friday, which hopefully brings a boost to local tourism.

On Oct. 1, the Port of San Diego said the Disney Wonder and Grand Princess will be the first sailing out of downtown San Diego’s B Street Cruise Terminal since the pandemic forced industry shutdowns in spring 2020.

The Disney Wonder will set sail on a 4-day cruise from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and back. The Grand Princess began sailing in Los Angeles on Thursday and will make a port stop in San Diego on Friday. The cruise ship will then head to Ensenada and back to Los Angeles, the Port of San Diego said.

These first sailings will be among more than 100 cruise calls that the Port of San Diego anticipates will happen through May 2022. The cruise liners expected to sail in and out of San Diego’s Embarcadero include Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and the Disney Cruise Line.

While these sailings are critical to the cruise line industry’s ongoing recovery from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, getting these ships sailing again is also good for the local economy and tourism.

According to the Port, when a ship like the Disney Wonder home ports in San Diego – meaning it starts and ends along the Embarcadero – it has the potential to bring about $2 million into the local economy. And when a cruise stops into San Diego even for the day, like the Grand Princess, the passengers coming off that ship can bring about $600,000 to the local economy.

“They get off the ship and they do everything we love them to do,” said Julie Coker, president and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority. “They eat in our restaurants, they shop at our local retailers, they support all of the small businesses here in San Diego.”

“But then it also gives them an opportunity to see San Diego on that one day stop and, oftentimes, they will then book future trips to come back to San Diego and spend more time here,” Coker added.

According to the Port, San Diego is California’s third busiest port, just behind Long Beach and Los Angeles. It’s also the gateway to the Mexican Riviera, plus the path for major cruising destinations like Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and the Pacific Coast. Since the start of the pandemic, the Port if San Diego said 173 local passenger cruises have been canceled.

Over the past year and a half, cruise liners have sometimes docked at the Port of San Diego, but not for actual cruises. Holland America’s Koningsdam, for instance, has docked to refuel and restock supplies.

COVID-19 Safety for Cruises in San Diego

As the pandemic continues, the Port said safety while resuming cruising is top of mind. The Port of San Diego said it is working with cruise lines, plus local, state and federal agencies on COVID safety measures to minimize community spread and exposure to the virus on cruise ships.

Some of those safety protocols include that all crew members and travelers age 12+ must be fully vaccinated. In some cases, medical exemptions could be allowed, but the Port said Celebrity Cruises, Holland America and Princess “must maintain that at least 95% of all guests are vaccinated.”

Meanwhile, Disney Cruise Line plans on testing all guests for COVID-19 on embarkation days, the Port said.

All unvaccinated guests must show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test between three days and 24 hours before embarking on a cruise.

Some other safety measures, according to the Port of San Diego:

• All persons must complete a health screening form in which they declare their vaccination status, negative COVID test result and attest that they’re not feeling ill or showing symptoms of COVID-19
• Face masks must be worn by all while inside the cruise ship terminal
• Whenever possible inside cruise ship terminals, passengers should keep social distance from other travelers who are not part of their party
• The cruise lines are staggering passenger screenings and check-ins, to prevent crowds
• The Port will fully clean and disinfect the terminals after each embarkation and disembarkation, and other things like Plexiglass barriers and hand sanitizer stations have been installed in high-traffic areas

Before traveling on a cruise, passengers should also read up on their cruise liner’s COVID-19 safety protocols.

NBC 7 reached out to Grand Princess about the cruise stopping in San Diego Friday. A representative for the cruise line said capacity is reduced on this sailing, at between 60 and 75%. After this sailing, the company plans to add “5 points or so with each voyage.”

NBC 7 also reached out to Disney Cruise Line about Oct. 1 Disney Wonder trip out of San Diego.

A rep said the cruise line is resuming sailing on a “gradual, phased approach,” which may also mean some modifications to itineraries from time to time.

'No Time To Die' Hints Q Is Gay in Landmark LGBTQ+ Scene - Newsweek

No Time to Die features a scene that seems to confirm Ben Whishaw's Q is gay, making his character the first ally of James Bond (played by Daniel Craig) to be out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Though the 007 franchise has previously had characters that were coded gay or were LGBTQ+ in the Ian Fleming books, these were nearly all villains.

In the new Bond movie (**spoilers ahead**), Bond and Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) make a surprise visit to Q's apartment to launch a covert mission without the knowledge of M (Ralph Fiennes).

Clearly not anticipating them showing up unannounced, Q is setting out a romantic dinner for two, only for his plans to be ruined by Bond and Moneypenny trying to save the world. As they barge into his home, he complains an unnamed "he" is set to arrive in "20 minutes," and that it this is the "first time" he's meeting his mystery guest. He also adds, "can't a guy have a nice night to himself for once?"

Though it is never said, the implication is clear: Q has been on the ol' dating apps, and is about to have a first date with a new man.

This scene is the latest from a blockbuster movie to introduce LGBTQ+ characters into previously very heterosexual worlds. Avengers: Endgame hit the headlines for a scene in which a man mourns the loss of his male partner during "The Blip," for example, while the more recent Jungle Cruise features a scene in which Jack Whitehall's character comes out.

While some have praised these scenes, others have criticised them for being minor moments that are frustratingly coy, that avoid speaking plainly about characters' gay lives.

Meanwhile, some viewers have pointed out that these films should seek to integrate their characters' sexualities throughout the film, rather than talk about them in short clips that seem to be designed so they can easily be cut out in countries with anti-gay laws and sentiments.

This is what happened, for example, with the Russian dub of Avengers: Endgame, which altered the script to say he met another man for dinner, rather than for a date. As No Time to Die has only been released in a few countries so far, however, it remains to be seen whether the film will edit this scene in less tolerant territories.

Though this Q scene may only be a minor moment, it is a landmark in a franchise that has previously had gay villains, with their homosexuality coded as part of what makes them so villainous.

For example, in the novel Diamonds are Forever, Felix Leiter suspects that sadistic killers Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd are gay – something the movie leans into by having them hold hands and say that one character is attractive "for a lady." In the movie, however, these things are portrayed as just another depraved part of their personality, on a par with their many cold-blooded murders.

The novel Goldfinger features the homophobic trope that Pussy Galore only became a lesbian after being sexually abused by a man. In the movie, meanwhile, she is coded lesbian, but it is implied that Bond is able to turn her straight with his male prowess.

Though this Q scene in No Time to Die suffers from the same problems as other modern blockbusters that overpromise and underdeliver on LGBTQ+ content, it does speak for the efforts the franchise has made to be more progressive.

The makers of Skyfall, for example, have spoken about having to fight to keep in a scene in which Bond flirts with Silva (Javier Bardem) and hints at a previous gay experience. Long time Bond producer Barbara Broccoli said in recent documentary Being James Bond, "I remember we were told to cut that line by the studio. We said, 'No, no, no.' We resisted."

Whishaw, who came out himself in 2013, has previously played gay characters like Norman Scott in A Very English Scandal and Danny Holt in London Spy. In 2019, The Sun reported that Whishaw was lobbying the Bond team to include a gay character – though this should be treated with some scepticism, as filming had already begun on the film when the report came out.

More recently, he has hit headlines for advocating for a gay actor to play Bond. "I really believe that we should be working towards a world where anyone can play anything," he told Attitude, "and it would be really thrilling if it didn't matter about someone's sexuality to take on a role like this."

No Time to Die is released in the U.S. on October 8.
