FW Publishing has named Mike Smith publisher of Nashville Scene, the largest of the company’s publishing brands. The downtown-based parent of the Scene also is promoting two team members: Jennifer Trsinar to publisher of Nfocus and Heather Cantrell Mullins to director of market strategy for Nashville Post.
Smith returns as publisher of the Scene after having left the role in 2015 to start Conjure Marketing & Experiences, a sponsorship and brand engagement firm that he will continue to own. He also will serve as the vice president of marketing for FW Publishing.
Smith has more than 20 years of media sales, marketing and events experience, and in his previous stint at the family of publications also helped grow Nfocus and launch the Scene event division that is now FW Events. In the Nashville community, he has co-created Nashville Fashion Week, served board stints with Nashville Repertory Theatre and Nashville CARES and held leadership roles in Leadership Nashville.
“This is an exciting time in the publishing business, particularly in a growing and vibrant market like Nashville, and our publications deserve dedicated and vibrant leaders to take advantage of the opportunities here,” says Frank Daniels III, president of FW Publishing. “The chance to bring Mike back to the Scene is a real coup for us. He brings a capacity for hard work, strong community connections and a Rolodex of resources.
"The Nashville Scene's print readership is strong," says Smith. "Add in our online, social media and event audiences and the Scene counts nearly 1 million people in its monthly audience. My role is to ensure we're providing exciting and effective tools for advertisers to use in reaching that audience while supporting our writers and editors, who will continue to report on the most relevant and vital topics and challenges that make our city such a rich place to live and play."
“We are equally excited to recognize the growth and success of two members of the FW Publishing team with the opportunity to expand their leadership roles,” Daniels says. “Jennifer, in her role as director of market strategy for the Post and Nfocus, has worked closely with editor Nancy Floyd and has been integral to the magazine’s growth. Heather’s work as director of business development with our partners and clients at the Post has been essential to its success.”
Trsinar joined the Post team in 2015 as a senior account executive and worked her way up to director of market strategy for both it and Nfocus. Before joining the team, she spent seven years in the destination management business, selling the city of Nashville for corporate meetings and conventions. In 2010, she helped launch the Perfect Wedding Guide Magazine in the Nashville market. She is a founding member and served as VP of communications for the International Live Events Association and sat on the Make a Wish Young Leaders Board for four years, including as chair in 2017-2018.
Mullins has worked for the publications that comprise FW Publishing for 15 years. She started in sales with The City Paper and soon after began working with clients to place advertising in the Scene, Nfocus and the Post. She has over time served as marketing director and advertising director of the Post and helped lead its efforts to grow strategic partnerships in the business community.
