SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS -- As long as they stay healthy, two Central New York couples who have spent nearly a month in two different quarantines are days away from getting to come home.
The couples’ vacation was cut short last month after COVID-19, a deadly coronavirus, broke out on the Diamond Princess cruise ship
Cheryl and Paul Molesky, of Syracuse, and Pete and Cindy Molesky, of Rome, spent close to 14 days confined to their cabin aboard the Diamond Princess, moored in Yokohama Bay in Japan. Of the close to 4,000 people who were on the ship, three have died and over 690 people have been sickened by COVID-19, reported the Japan Times.
After two close to weeks quarantined in Japan, the couples -- along with over 300 other Americans -- were flown back to the United States by the federal government. They were then placed in a new quarantine on the Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.
Nine days into their second quarantine, both couples got the results of their second test for COVID-19: They have tested negative for the coronavirus.
“We’re feeling fine!” Cheryl Molesky told Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. “All 4 of us.”
As their quarantine comes closer to ending, she said they are all getting “anxious and excited” to go home.
Cheryl and Paul Molesky have kept a YouTube video diary during their time in both quarantines to lift their spirits and keep their loved ones updated.
On Sunday, day seven of their 14-day quarantine in Texas, the couple posted a video to give people a “silly look” at their frightening circumstances.
Their unwritten quarantine rules included saying thank you to everyone -- albeit while donning masks -- and refraining from drinking hot tea or taking a hot shower before their daily temperature-taking time.
The couple commented on serious news out of Texas: Six people on the Lackland Air Force Base have tested positive for COVID-19, according to Texas Public Radio. Five of the sickened people were passengers on the Diamond Princess.
“Fortunately, they all have minor or zero symptoms!” the Moleskys wrote on YouTube. “We wish them and their families the very best.”
Over 80,200 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed across the world, the World Health Organization reported Tuesday morning. So far, 2,700 people have died.
While cases have been reported in 34 countries, China has been the hardest hit: There have been 77,780 cases of COVID-19 confirmed, so far, in China, reported the WHO.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have warned Americans to brace themselves for the likelihood that COVID-19 will spread to the United States.
“It’s not so much of a question of if this will happen in this country any more but a question of when this will happen,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told The New York Times on Tuesday. “We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad."
