I think my film is way softer. The women are the center of the film and the brains of the operation, while the guys just strut around. I’ve made a lot of movies with the women at the center. I don’t think I have that kind of misogyny in me, and it’s not my sensibility. There were things in the book and the movie that didn’t resonate with me. I liked that these were two guys who were interested in women, and in their primitive way try to understand them, they fail to understand the mystery and power that makes a woman. That’s what interested me. They’re never rough with the women in my movie, but in Going Places, they were.
The Jesus makes numerous sexual advances on his sidekick Petey. Is that more about lust for life than carnal lust?
Yeah—they’re friends, and a lot of boys’ experiences growing up involve exploration. I thought it was interesting to have one guy more comfortable with it than the other. You don’t see it that much in American movies, whether it’s bisexual, homosexual, or heterosexual. It’s natural, and the way I grew up. Also, The Jesus was in prison for a long time [laughs]. Nowadays, people are very sensitive to certain things, and you have to be careful. Even if I think it’s funny. I’ve always seen the movie as a love story between three people.
Was this the first time, maybe since shooting Lebowski, that you’ve become The Jesus? Do you ever drop quotes at parties?
People have asked me for years, and it really bothered me. I’ve gotten love letters from ladies, guys, and prisoners, so I figured I’d make this movie and get it over with [laughs]. It’s just a fun character, and a guy who imagines himself much greater than he really is, like Don Quixote. The Dude was like a less ambitious Quixote, but The Jesus sees himself as a masterpiece. Everything he does is a masterpiece in his own mind, despite the fact that everything he does backfires. The Jesus is a good reminder that we need to enjoy the moment and the little things. There’s a trainer at my gym named Otto who is always happy. He loves to dance and laugh, and people go to the gym just to be near him. His vibe is infectious. I showed him the movie and he was dying laughing.
I saw a bit of Easy Rider’s bikers in The Jesus and Petey, in the sense that they have no place in modern society.
Definitely! It’s a road movie, and they have no destination. They’re anti-bourgeois guys, yet stupid enough to steal a car for a joyride and then return it. They live on the margins of society, and form their own family and morality. It has the crazy energy of a silent movie, like Buster Keaton running from a boulder. I like things that are rebellious. If you just follow along with everything all the time, you wind up hypnotized by a lot of numb nuts.
Were Tautou, Cannavale, and Sarandon game for anything you threw at them, or did the threesome sex scenes take some convincing?
I’m a pretty gentle guy and a team player. We go through everything together and make sure everybody is comfortable. A lot of it is mostly choreography and making sure you’re not hurting the person. Audrey is hilarious in the threesome scene, and it’s something you don’t usually see. Susan is someone I’ve worked with so many times, so it was just choreography. I’m a gentleman, and if you ask any of the ladies that I’ve worked with on many movies, hopefully they’ll say that. I see myself that way. And if you’re gonna show your butt, I’m gonna show my butt. We’re all a team, and it can’t be exploitive. But, I think sexuality in a lot of movies these days is stunted. I don’t think that’s good or healthy. I’ve never had an intimacy coach before, but I understand why they’re necessary.
