An 11-year-old boy riding his bicycle was injured after a driver struck him on a Brooklyn street early Monday evening.
The motorist, not identified, was arrested shortly after fled the scene. Initially, witnesses said, he stopped to check on the boy, but then got back into his Chrysler minivan and drove away before police arrived.
He was nabbed a block away by officers from the 70th Precinct, police say.
The crash occurred at 5:20 p.m. on Feb. 17, when the boy, with his 14-year-old brother were crossing Rugby Road and Ditmas Avenue with other bicyclists. The driver of the van allegedly ran a red light and struck the boy, witnesses said.
Firefighters stabilized the boy as his brothers huddled around him. The victim’s father also showed up from their nearby home.
The boy was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was expected to make a recovery. None of the boys were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
The driver was taken into custody shortly afterwards, with charges pending. Cops did not release his identity.
A witness who stayed with the boy was incredulous that the driver left.
“He did the right thing and stopped to check on the boy, but then, he left – I don’t know why,” the witness said.
