Richmond: Driver hit and killed 4-year-old, then fled crash scene - East Bay Times

Richmond police are looking for a driver who hit and killed a young child with an SUV Friday afternoon, then fled the crash scene.

The child’s parents had been walking with the 4-year-old in the 2200 block of Coalinga Avenue around 5 p.m. Friday when the collision happened, according to police.

The person who hit the child didn’t stop, continuing to drive west on Coalinga Avenue away from 23rd Street, police said.

The child was taken by helicopter to a hospital but died late Friday night, Richmond police Lt. Matt Stonebraker said.

Police shared surveillance camera photos of the vehicle they are now looking for: a green Ford Explorer, which is a distinctive two-door model made between 1994 and 2000.

“There are probably not a lot in the area,” Stonebraker said as police continued their search for the car Saturday morning.

The car also has aftermarket wheels, police said, as well as a white rectangular sticker in a rear window on the passenger side. It also likely has some minor damage to its front end, according to police.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Richmond police at 510-233-1214.
