Three years after opening its taproom in the Westside, Santa Monica Brew Works is about to hit a major growth spurt with a bigger taproom, a dog-friendly patio, a new restaurant and more beer.
“I’m excited. I’m a little bit nervous as I should be, you should always be a little bit nervous when you take on bigger things, but (there’s) a great feeling of satisfaction,” co-founder Scott Francis said as he sat in the office at Santa Monica Brew Works’ 14,500-square-foot facility. He plans to more than double that space in size by early next year.
The ambitious plans for the brewery, which is known for beers such as its 310 California Blonde Ale, the Inclined IPA, PCH Golden Chocolate Porter and the Xtra Pale Ale, call for creating a nearly 35,000-square-foot facility by moving into the recently vacated space next door to the brewery that once housed a pharmaceutical research facility.
It’s a space Francis has had his eye on ever since opening Santa Monica Brew Works in 2014.
“When we first looked at the building I remember saying ‘Wouldn’t it be great if one day we had the whole building?’ and six years years later, here we are,” he said.
The 112-seat, 200-person capacity taproom, which opened in 2016 and is often packed with the after work crowds on weekdays and a mix of locals and tourists on the weekends, will expand with 63 additional seats and the capacity to hold 350 people. There will be a second bar added as well as a restaurant counter serving pub food including burgers, pizza, salads and vegan dishes.
Francis is shooting for a June opening for the new taproom and restaurant.
But before that, by the middle of March, a 75-seat dog-friendly beer garden will open on the weekends in the space in front of the brewery.
The growth also means that the brewery, which sells its beer at more than 1,000 locations including major grocery chains such as Ralph’s, Vons and Costco as well as sports facilities like Dodger Stadium and Staples Center, will expand its production capability from 14,000 barrels per year to nearly 30,000 barrels per year.
And if for some crazy reason beer isn’t your thing, the brewery also plans on serving wine and kombucha.
Francis said the aim is for the entire expansion to be completed by early January 2021 and the brewery will remain open during construction.
“It will be the same enjoyable close-knit community place where people meet as it was before, only we’ll be able to hold more people,” he said.
