MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- More than 1,000 employees of Miller Coors in Milwaukee have been allowed to go home after a gunman opened fire on coworkers, killing five before killing himself.
In a Wednesday evening news conference, Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said officials are not ready to identify the victims while some family members are still to arrive from out of town.
Police are continuing their investigation and recovery of the bodies of the victims, Morales said. The scene has been secured and all employees have now been allowed to go home.
"We're a family here at Molson Coors and this was unthinkable to most of us," said Molson Coors CEO Gavin Hattersley
The shooter died from an apparent self-inflicted wound, according to Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales.
Hattersley posted a statement on Twitter saying the shooter was an active brewery employee. Officials confirmed the five people killed were also employees.
"This is an unspeakable tragedy for our city," said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.
More than 1,000 employees were working at the MillerCoors campus on the city's west side when the shooting occurred.
At an earlier news conference, Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, a Milwaukee native, said he had personal apprehension at finding out the names of the dead. "We have a duty to act. We have to be more responsible as a city, as a state, as a nation and stop these preventable tragedies from happening."
Gov. Tony Evers asked for a brief moment of silence before saying the tragedy's breadth enveloped the entire state of Wisconsin.
"The hearts of the people of Wisconsin go out to the folk who were needlessly murdered at MolsonCoors this afternoon," the governor said. "The First Lady and I will be praying tonight together for the lives that have been lost."
Morales said he hoped to provide additional details later in the night.
