VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI — A multi-county, high-speed chase, that ended when the driver of the suspect vehicle slid off the road and into a utility pole, resulted in a 22-year-old Detroit woman being airlifted from the scene in critical condition.
The driver, a 24-year-old male from Detroit, suffered three broken ribs and was treated and released from Lakeland St. Joseph Hospital, according to a news release from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
He is currently being lodged at the Van Buren County Jail on several felony and misdemeanor charges and had an outstanding warrant from Wayne County, the release states.
Van Buren County sheriff’s deputies were first alerted to the pursuit at around 8:45 a.m. Feb. 15 after receiving a radio transmission from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office that Berrien deputies had been pursuing a vehicle headed toward Van Buren County, the release states.
The suspect vehicle, a 2019 gray Chrysler 300, was first spotted by police, traveling at an excessive amount of speed, headed east on I-94, near mile maker 17, the release states.
Officers from the Baroda-Lake Police Department attempted to stop the vehicle, but were unsuccessful. The officers eventually lost sight of the vehicle, but a Berrien County unit located it shortly thereafter, the release states.
The suspect vehicle continued to flee police in Berrien County and eventually entered into Van Buren County on County Road 362 and then turned north on County Road 687 in Hartford Township, the release states.
The suspect then lost control of his vehicle in the 6700 block of County Road 687, due to excessive speeds and the icy road conditions, the release states.
The suspect vehicle left the roadway striking a 90-foot-tall aluminum utility pole, causing significant damage to the passenger side of the car.
The driver is being held at the jail on his outstanding warrant, fleeing and eluding, driving while on a suspended license and causing serious injury in a traffic crash, the release states.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office is continuing the crash investigation along with the assistance of the Michigan State Police, the release states. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, Baroda-Lake Police Department, Watervliet Police Department, Hartford Police Department and Pokagon Tribal Police all assisted in the pursuit.
West Michigan Air Care, the Hartford Fire Department and Pride Care Ambulance Service also assisted, according to the release.
