A Mobile music hall will host an online fund-raising concert Sunday to benefit local acts and event workers who’ve seen their incomes wither due to widespread event cancellations.
Band Together will be streamed live from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. It’s presented by Soul Kitchen Music Hall in conjunction with Sound Associates Inc. and WZEW-FM 92.1. Featured acts are the Red Clay Strays, Kristy Lee, Abe Partridge, Deluna and Ryan Dyer. As she announced the show Thursday morning on WZEW, Soul Kitchen co-owner Maggie Smith Eynon explained that the general shutdown related to the coronavirus outbreak has hit the local live music scene hard.
The busy spring season is normally “a big opportunity for everyone downtown to make enough money to keep them going over the summer,” she said.
Soul Kitchen, the biggest venue in downtown Mobile short of the Saenger Theatre and the Mobile Civic Center Theater, has very few regular employees but might employ as many as 50 for a big concert. The situation is similar at Sound Associates, which provides lighting, staging, staffing and other services for concerts and similar special events.
“The time is now,” Eynon said. “These people need money now. Not a month from now.” She’s shooting for a telethon-style fundraising goal of $10,000, with more concerts to follow. The beneficiaries will include “musicians, engineers, technicians, venue employees and production crews.”
“I want to make it clear that Sound Associates and Soul Kitchen will take no money for this,” she said. At least one of Sunday’s acts also has turned down money for the event, she said.
Band Together shows strong possibility of snowballing into a series, Eynon said.
“We could have had 20 bands,” she said. “We’re going to try to make this a weekly thing until this is over.”
The current lineup skews to roots-rock, singer-songwriters, psychedelic rock and a touch of country. “The next one we want to do some hip-hop guys, some rockers,” Eynon said.
Plans call for Sunday’s concert to be streamed on YouTube and at WZEW’s website, Facebook page and app. Links for donations via have been posted at the Facebook page for the event, and Eynon said donations can be made now. The event also is open to sponsorships; interested parties can email maggie@soulkitchenmobile.com.
Donations aren’t mandatory to view the concert. Eynon suggested viewers think about the ticket price they might pay to attend such a show, and the tips they might give bartenders during such an event.
