Herald backs locals covering locals to support music scene - Boston Herald

The coronavirus has had a devastating impact on certain people’s livelihoods. Bartenders and chefs, cab drivers and massage therapists, hotel housekeepers and, of course, musicians. The intense drop in record sales over the past decade has made musicians dependent on touring. Now the bottom has dropped out of touring.

Riffing on an idea Sasha Alcott of When Particles Collide had, I enlisted Alcott, Ali McGuirk and Jenee Halstead to help celebrate the local music scene and make musicians some much needed cash. Today on their social media accounts, When Particles Collide, McGuirk and Halstead will each debut a performance covering a song by a fellow artist. By tagging the artist they pay tribute to, the hope is those artists will find another local artist to cover and tag. The goal is to create a chain of amazing performances and offer real support to our scene.

The Boston Herald will help amplify the performances by sharing the posts. You can help by digging into the posts and finding the artists’ websites — in each post, the artist will provide a few links to sites you can use to support their work.

To provide a little insight into our artists’ covers, I asked them to explain just how they selected their songs.

When Particles Collide on Ghost of Paul Revere’s ‘Montreal’

“We wanted to pay tribute to this band not only because we’re also from Maine, but because they, like us, are a full-time band making their living from touring,” Alcott said.

“More importantly, these guys are our good friends. It may seem odd that an indie rock band like WPC is good friends with an Americana band like The Ghost, but music brings people together in wonderful and unexpected ways. In 2013 we met Griffin, Sean and Max because both bands had won an online competition for bands and musicians in Maine. When The Ghost released their first full length album, ‘Believe’ in 2014, we performed two songs with them at their Port City Music Hall show. When we released our album ‘This Town’ in 2015 The Ghost came up on stage during our record release show to sing some harmonies with us.” (whenparticlescollide.com)

Jenee Halstead on Susan Cattaneo’s ‘The Hammer & the Heart’

“It is one of my favorite songs of all time and I have always wanted to cover it,” Halstead said. “There are two challenges, however. The song is quite difficult and emotional, so you really have to get into it to pull it off and it makes me cry every time I play it. I gave it a college try. Susan is an incredible Boston-based, but nationally renowned, songwriter and one of my co-writing partners. I love her work. This song haunts me.” (jeneehalstead.com)

Ali McGuirk on Lula Wiles’ ‘Shaking As It Turns’

“Lula Wiles play their asses off and use their platform to promote ideas I deeply believe in,” McGuirk said.

“For so many people on this planet, the chaos, grief and daily uncertainty caused by a broken, violently hegemonic, neo-liberal, white supremacist and hetero-normative social system is not a new experience. COVID is forcing all of us to face our own internal and external demons and with songs like this, we are better equipped to understand the world around us, empower ourselves and be in solidarity.” (Ali McGuirk’s Kickstarter is at http://kck.st/2ILGeVW) #
