NEWBURGH, N.Y. — A woman was found with several stab wounds early Thursday at the scene of a residential building fire, according to city police.

Police and firefighters responded to 24 Dubois St. in Newburgh about 12:30 a.m. for a report of a fire and stabbing victim, police said. They said officers encountered smoke in a second-floor hallway, so they left the building and let firefighters extinguish the blaze.

Officers then were told there was a stabbing victim on a rear fire escape, and they found a 47-year-old woman who had been stabbed in her abdomen and arms, police said.

Police said the woman was treated by emergency medical responders and taken to a nearby hospital, where she was listed in serious condition.

The woman’s name was not provided, and police did not say if they had any suspects in the stabbing.
