With the U.S. and global employment landscape in turmoil, Paul Hastings on Tuesday welcomed Jeffrey Webb, the national leader of Ropes & Gray’s labor and employment practice, as a new partner in Los Angeles.

“The current global pandemic has reinforced the importance of employment law advice for our clients around the world,” Seth Zachary, chairman of Paul Hastings, said in a statement. “Now more than ever, our clients are coming to us for advice on navigating workforce challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and we expect that to continue even as the crisis abates.”

Webb’s practice focuses on class, collective and representative actions involving discrimination, WARN Act, ERISA and other claims. He has defended whistleblower actions under Dodd Frank, the False Claims act and other statutes, according to Paul Hastings.

For Webb, who had been splitting his time at Ropes & Gray between Boston and San Francisco, the move also provides a desired new home base in LA.

“There is no better place to practice in LA,” he said in an interview. “Paul Hastings is the gold standard for employment work in California.”

Before his seven-year stay at Ropes & Gray, Webb was a prosecutor in Massachusetts, including running the state’s Fair Labor Division under Attorney General Martha Coakley. Earlier he was a partner at McDermott Will & Emery and spent two separate stints at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He was also a vice president of legal affairs at Fox Entertainment Group, where he advised Fox executives and led a team of in-house lawyers that litigated employment cases against the company’s film, TV and sports subsidiaries.

As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, industries continue to shed workers and states weigh reopening their economies, complications to balancing worker safety and economic output have come to the forefront.

“Employment lawyers have been very busy since this started,” Webb said. “Initially it was questions with how you handle sick employees, then it shifted to questions about terminations and concerns about layoffs. Now, people are starting to worry about the return to work and how you manage that. I expect lots of questions involving safety, the WARN Act and trade secrets.”

He said bringing employees back to work will take time and will raise a host of questions.

“The return is going to be gradual. And all these decisions companies are making about who is impacted and in what order could be viewed as discriminatory,” Webb said. “We will then see the lawsuits.”

Ropes & Gray, through a spokesperson, said it wishes Webb the best at his new firm.
