DOJ: Two dead at scene of Jefferson County shootout, house fire - WKOW

JEFFERSON COUNTY (WKOW) -- Two people were found dead at the scene of a Tuesday evening shoot out and house fire in Jefferson County, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was called to go to the home in the town of Sumner June 16 for a possible burglary.

When the deputy arrived, he found two people laying on the driveway, later determined to be dead.

The deputy took fire from the residence and returned fire, according to a news release.

After the shootout just after 5:45 p.m., the deputy noticed black smoke coming from the residence -- which led to a massive fire at the home. Officials still haven't said what might have sparked that fire.

At this time, law enforcement believes the incident was targeted and not a random act.

The home that went up in flames is owned by a 90-year old man who died less than two weeks ago. One week ago, his children and other potential heirs filed as interested persons in a Jefferson County court case to determine the division of his property.

For much of Tuesday, law enforcement personnel were at the Fort Atkinson home that belongs to 68-year-old Kevin Anderson, the man now sought by authorities in connection to the case.

Sources with knowledge of this investigation tell 27 News a large deployment of law enforcement personnel were also at Lake Ripley Lanes in Cambridge Wednesday morning in connection to the Fort Atkinson events. The bowling center's owner has yet to respond to requests for comment from WKOW-TV.

Witnesses shared images and video of the fire at the home located near the area of Klement Road, County Highway A and Hwy. 106 in the town of Sumner, which hugs the northern shore of Lake Koshkonong.

Viewer images from Dustin Lehman show the home completely engulfed.
