The Port of Beaumont’s is planning a new project that will help handle growing cargo volume and truck traffic.

A $1.57 million grant by the Texas Department of Transportation as part of the Port Access Program, will allow the port to build a new truck-queuing area capable of holding 27 trucks and adds more areas that will allow trucks to easily pull-in or exit without blocking the street.

The Beaumont port reported an 87% increase in cargo volume from 2017 to 2019. That includes an increased the number of trucks moving in and out of its property.

Sade Chick, the port’s manager of corporate affairs, said the project will help improve logistics in and around the port as it continues to see growth in truck cargos like wind turbine components, material for industrial projects and military equipment.

“In short, we have seen a significant increase in cargo volume (even this year) and the truck queuing area is going to reduce congestion on city streets and in the port,” she said in a message to the Enterprise.

The space will also include a dog run with a green space that will allow truckers to stretch their legs before taking off again..

The Port Access Grant Program is a matching grant system that aims to create infrastructure improvements by pooling the resources of state transportation authorities and ports.

So far, $102.3 million in grants has been given to 13 ports over the last six years and an additional $40.7 million for projects has been generated by those recipients.

The state estimates that projects completed over the past six years have helped improve the economic impact port’s contribute to their regions.

Port Director Chris Fischer said this latest project will have similar impacts for Beaumont, making it more attractive to private and public clients that need an efficient option for sending and receiving their cargo.

“By having a designated area for trucks to be staged, our response time will be quicker, it will mitigate congestion at the Port's main gate, trucks will be removed from city streets, and drivers will have a space to decompress while they wait,” Fisher said in a statement.

“The Port Access Program is a tremendous asset that helps keep Texas ports competitive and we are grateful to TxDOT for the work they have done to ensure the program is sustainable.”
