BALDWIN – Jim Warren has been liking what he’s seen of the fishing scene in Lake County.
“It’s going good,” he said on Thursday night. “We’ve done a lot of bass fishing and pike. Tyler (Clugston) is out fishing right now. He’s got a nice pike and a 2 1/2 -pound bass. He fishes on Mench Lake north of downtown Baldwin. It’s a community type lake. That’s all it is.”
Warren said they’ve been fishing after 7 p.m. to beat the heat and avoid having the sun in their eyes.
Wildlife has been very active, Warren has observed.
“I’ve seen a lot of deer,” he said. “On my trail cameras in the back, we’ve got two fawns, you can’t believe the little fawns we’ve got this year. There’s six of them. There’s different does back there and three bucks that are going to be six-pointers already.
“The bears, they’re just tearing everything up around here. There’s a bear who tips the dumpsters over. It’s a 2 1/2 by 5-yard dumpster. It has trail cams on it. It tips the dumpster right over. About three guys tip it back up the next day. They’re a powerful animal.”
As for baby turkeys, “I’ve seen a momma with two babies with her and that’s all the turkeys I’ve seen this year,” Warren said. “I don’t know if all that wet weather got them. You aren’t seeing any baby turkeys. People I talk to aren’t seeing any either.
“The year will be a bumper crop for deer. I haven’t heard anything about baiting or anything. They really don’t need it with all the deer I’ve seen up and down the road.”
