
Today, the Burns Harbor port is home to 30 companies, including three steel mills and 15 steel-related companies on its nearly 600 acres. It handles 9,000 rail cars, 75 ships, 350,000 trucks, 376 barges and 200 Great Lakes vessels a year, according to port officials. It accounts for 30,000 jobs and contributes $4.6 billion in economic activity to the local economy each year, port officials said.
