St. Louis County Undersheriff Dave Phillips told the News Tribune, "Considering the condition of the plane, it's nothing short of a miracle." Phillips told the News Tribune that a man and a woman were found 400 feet north of the crash site and that authorities were not aware of any other passengers on the plane.
Phillips told the News Tribune the call of the reported plane crash came in around 3 p.m. and by 4 p.m. authorities found the scene of the crash about two miles east of the airport. He told the News Tribune that emergency responders started to immediately put out a small fire at the scene near the convergence of Bodas and Clyde roads in Fayal Township.
Phillips also told the News Tribune the "extensive damage to the plane made it difficult to determine the number of passengers or their identities."
Phillips told the News Tribune he could not confirm the condition of the survivors or their identity.
Tower Municipal Airport manager John Burgess told the News Tribune that the PA-32 Saratoga, a small 6-passenger single-engine plane, took off from the airport between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
St. Louis County Rescue Squad, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department, Lakeland Fire Department, Fayal Fire Department, Gilbert Fire Department, Central Lakes Fire Department, Hibbing Ambulance, and Eveleth Ambulance are currently staging on Bodas Road, roughly 3 miles from the Eveleth-Virginia Municipal Airport.
