17-year-old artist captures Impressionist party scene in new downtown mural - Chico Enterprise-Record

OROVILLE – At the corner of Montgomery and Myers streets behind the black wrought iron fence, behind the construction equipment a new mural graces the wall of Miner’s Alley Brewing Company in Union Square.

At first glance the 11-by-11 foot painting of men and women enjoying a leisurely repast by a lake feels strikingly familiar, like something seen in an art book or museum.

The colors are vivid and rich. The bold broken brush strokes emphasize light and shadow. This use of color and brush strokes combined with the mural’s open composition and the attire of its subjects are reminiscent of works done by 19th Century French Impressionists.

“I wanted to create a party scene based on (Pierre-Auguste) Renoir’s ‘Luncheon of the Boating Party.’ For a mural this big that style was also practical because the surface which is cement has a lot of cracks and bumps so it would be hard to get really precise, hard, clean lines,” explained Forest Wong.

Wong, co-valedictorian of the Oroville High class of 2020, said it was her mom, Louisa Louie, who introduced her to painting.

“My mom draws and paints, and my grandpa paints. I’ve been doing art basically my whole life. It very much runs in our family,” said the 17-year-old.

Wong took to art and began studying it in school and at summer camps and workshops. In 2019, her “May the Forest be With You” painting won the Congressional Art Competition for District 1.

It wasn’t long after Wong’s parents, Brian Wong and Louisa Louie, who, along with extended family own Tong Fong Low restaurants in Oroville and Chico, purchased Miner’s Alley Brewing Company, that her mom started eyeing the courtyard-facing wall as a potential canvas for some of her daughter’s work.

“I saw that wall and I thought ‘why not do something with it?’ You know something that would showcase Forest’s work so people could appreciate her art,” said Louie.

To get started on her first mural project, Wong took a photo of the blank wall and uploaded it to her iPad so she could use a drawing program to design the image.

“It’s a pretty big space to work with and get the proportions right so I sketched it out first on my iPad,” said Wong.

Once that was done local artists and muralists Ted Hansen and Frank Wilson assisted with getting a base coat on the wall so Wong could get to work. Using acrylic paint and climbing up, down and around on scaffolding, Wong completed the mural in 18 days. Hansen and Wilson returned to apply the topcoat.

“When I was still painting people would come by or stop and check it out,” said Wong.

Louie added, “A lot of people, local artists especially came by, all cheering her on. We really appreciate it, the support from the community she got.”

With the mural complete and the remodeling of the restaurant’s interior, construction of the outside courtyard dining area and testing of new menu items underway daily, the family of local restaurateurs hopes to re-open Miner’s Alley Brewing Company under a new name, The Union, perhaps as early as this month, said Louie.

Wong will be leaving her hometown in the fall to attend Columbia University where she will study visual arts.
