Capitol Hill’s Kakigori Dessert Cafe Opens, Joining Seattle Shave Ice Scene - Eater Seattle

Welcome back to Eater News, a semi-regular round-up of mini news bites. Have info to share? Email intel to seattle@eater.com.

New Capitol Hill Kakigori and Bingsoo Shop Joins the Shave Ice Party

Elaborately-decorated heaps of shave ice — a dessert beloved around the globe — can often hit the spot on a hot summer’s day. Now, there’s a new entry to the local scene: Kakigori Dessert Cafe has opened in on East Madison Street (up the road from the Capitol Hill Trader Joe’s), serving up a variety of the frozen treats for takeout. On the menu at the shop from the family that owns Thai by Day in Edmonds are mango and Thai sticky rice kakigori, sweet corn bingsoo, and black sesame bingsoo with red bean paste. There are also some toasts topped with soft serve ice cream, as well as some coffee drinks. It joins a growing shave ice scene in Seattle with the likes of Milkie Milkie and Snowy Village drawing fans, and Mike’s Shave Ice serving Hawaiian twists.

Pop-up-Turned-Restaurant Local Tide Opens In Fremont Thursday

In the works for over a year, the new seafood-focused restaurant Local Tide opens at the Ceder Speedster building in Fremont Thursday with crab rolls, shrimp toasts, and rockfish banh mi. Owner Victor Steinbrueck — who started the venture as a pop-up in Pike Place Market three years ago — hopes to stand out from the crowded Seattle seafood pack through intense quality control and attention to detail, such as cracking the crabs onsite and sourcing ingredients from local vendors he trusts. Steinbrueck tells Eater Seattle he will start by doing takeout-only for now, with the hopes of opening up the slick dining room down the line. “We have no choice but to continue adapting,” he says.

Acclaimed Indian Restaurant Nirmal’s Plans Eastside Delivery Expansion

Eastsiders who crave the well-crafted dishes at Indian destination Nirmal’s soon won’t have to make the long trek over to Pioneer Square. Owner Oliver Bangera tells Eater Seattle that he plans to open up a new commercial kitchen in Factoria, so that he can expand the restaurant’s customer base (Nirmal’s is currently open for takeout and delivery service within just a few miles of the restaurant). The goal eventually is to open up a fast-casual restaurant in Bellevue called Khushi (as announced earlier this year) — those plans are still moving forward after some lease renegotiations, but the opening will be delayed due to COVID-19 until next year. In the meantime, the new kitchen will hopefully “create a few more jobs and reach a few more customers,” says Bangera.
