Law enforcement officers inspect fire extinguishers.
Law enforcement officers from the Shanghai transportation commission have begun an across-the-board inspection of dangerous goods at Shanghai Port.
The inspection was launched in the wake of the warehouse blast at the port of Beirut, Lebanon, which has so far taken 150 lives and injured over 5,000.
The inspection, which will last till the end of this month, will cover 21 ports for dangerous goods within the range of Shanghai Port, as well as 44 operation areas and 39 companies.
On Friday, law enforcement officers, together with inspectors from the management of the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park, inspected Shanghai Vopak.
This company, based in Jinshan District, provides port warehousing and logistics services for businesses at the industry park and nearby including Secco and Basf. It has an annual throughput of over 8 million tons of goods and has 78 storage tanks.
The inspectors checked safety measures implemented in port operations, contingency plans, reserve appliances and materials to combat typhoons and floods, and firefighting equipment.
During the inspection, law enforcement officers and inspectors found that one of the six fire extinguishers was out of date. They asked the company to rectify the problem and ensure there were regular checks.
