The Port of Hamburg could play a major role in Germany's national hydrogen strategy. Photo: HHM Michael LindnerA German port is being backed as a future hydrogen hub as the German government gears up to implement a new national hydrogen strategy.
The Authority for Economy and Innovation (BWI) in Hamburg said the Port of Hamburg “has ideal prerequisites to become a hydrogen hub”.
Speaking exclusively to Port Strategy, BWI explained: “It is home to several large industrial companies, which have a high demand for green hydrogen and will become key drivers for a green hydrogen economy.”
In June, Germany adopted a national hydrogen strategy with 'green' sustainable hydrogen prioritised for investment to aid decarbonisation. Germany's government acknowledges that "only hydrogen produced on the basis of renewable energies ('green' hydrogen) is sustainable in the long term" and aims to creation of 10GW of domestic electrolysis capacity for green hydrogen made in Germany by 2040 at the latest. The government said that the majority of the green hydrogen demand will have to be imported.
The country will focus the use of hydrogen on shipping, aviation, heavy goods transport and industry.
BWI stated: “Despite excellent conditions to produce green hydrogen in Hamburg and Northern Germany, there will always be a need to import green hydrogen. These imports will necessarily run through ports and this will become a win-win situation because supply and demand for green hydrogen focus in one location.
“The creation of such a hydrogen hub will also allow the transport sector to use hydrogen, either through fuel cells or as synthetic fuels. Since a port is by definition a logistics hub, we can combine the most promising applications for hydrogen (industry and transport) in the Port of Hamburg.
“The North German Hydrogen Strategy established this concept already in November 2019 but it was confirmed further by the German National Hydrogen Strategy and the European Hydrogen Strategy.”
