More than 2,500 pieces of military cargo were recently moved through the Port of Corpus Christi as the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division U.S. Army returned stateside after nine months in Germany. The Port of Corpus Christi is a federally designated strategic military port and moves thousands of pieces of U.S. Department of Defense cargo a year.

“Corpus Christi enjoys a long and rich tradition of supporting the American warfighter at home and abroad,” said Sean Strawbridge, chief executive officer for the Port of Corpus Christi. “The South Texas Coastal Bend has been a home to the U.S military for decades, including Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi, Naval Air Station-Kingsville, and the Corpus Christi Army Depot. We are proud to continue this commitment with the 842nd Transportation Battalion.”

The movement of military cargo and equipment through the Port of Corpus Christi is a coordinated effort with the U.S. Transportation Command, U.S. Army 842nd Transportation Battalion, U.S. Coast Guard, Texas Department of Public Safety, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the International Longshoremen’s Association.

The most recent cargo included six vessels, nearly 200 commercial trucks, and more than 600 railcars for unit transport to Fort Hood.

“Working to ensure our military is in a perpetual state of readiness is a mission the Port of Corpus Christi constantly strives to fulfill,” said Charles W. Zahn, Port of Corpus Christi Commission chairman. “We always aim to see to it that our military is able to efficiently and effectively transport what they need to be prepared for any threats that may arise that challenge the stability of our nation or the rest of the world.”

The Port of Corpus Christi is the third-largest port in the United States in terms of tonnage. It is the leading oil export port in the nation.
