(Green Bay, Wis.) – For the second straight month, the Port of Green Bay continued to experience the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the struggling economy. For the month of August, 153,168 tons of cargo moved through the Port, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,606,865 tons. That’s down 19% from the same time a year ago.
While imports of foreign salt remain strong most other cargo categories are flat or down from a year ago when the Port of Green Bay saw its best numbers since 2007.
“While we got off to a strong start this shipping season, July and August have seen a significant slowdown,” said Dean Haen, Port Director. “Most cargos have been impacted as the economy languishes due primarily do the impact of COVID-19 around the world.”
August imports included more than 53,000 tones of cement and 50,000 tons of limestone (both domestic and foreign). Foreign salt imports totaled about 16,000 tons in August. For the 2020 shipping season, cement imports are up 22%, foreign salt imports are up 14% and total limestone imports are down 19%.
So far in 2020, 93 vessels have visited the Port of Green Bay, down 8% from the same time period a year ago.
