TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A townhouse in west Topeka caught fire early Tuesday after it was struck by lightning, authorities said.
The lightning strike was reported around 5:43 a.m. at a residence at 7400 S.W. 22nd Court.
Initial reports indicate an occupant of the house called 911 to report the smell of smoke after the house had been hit by a lightning strike.
Topeka Fire Department Battalion Chief Bruce Andruss said crews arrived to find some flames and smoke coming from the attic.
Crews were able to enter the house and gain access to the attic area, where they put out the fire.
At least two firefighters were on top of the two-story residence as they worked to ensure all the hot spots were out.
Light smoke could be seen coming from the residence for nearly an hour after the lightning strike was reported.
A large hole on the south side of the home’s roof could be seen. It was apparently the result of the lightning strike.
Several neighbors gathered outside their homes to watch as fire crews responded to the scene.
Several said the lightning strike resulted in an extremely loud noise. One woman said it was the loudest thing she’d ever heard.
No injuries were reported.
An estimated dollar loss associated with the blaze wasn’t immediately available.
