Mexico’s general port and maritime commerce coordination entity has identified at least two business opportunities for the ports near Yucatán state capital Mérida, where port authorities work on infrastructure projects valued at 3.5bn pesos (US$162mn).
The opportunities are related to the construction of the US$7.5bn Maya train, communications and transportations ministry SCT said in a statement on September 6. One of the 1,500km rail line’s main stations will be operating by 2022 in Mérida and three more throughout Yucatán.
The train project could bring opportunities for tourism, including a new maritime cruise route between Progreso port, 35km from Mérida, and Veracruz port in Veracruz state.
And Maya train works have potential to spur basalt stone handling, used for the foundation of the railway, at the region’s ports, the ministry said.
Port authority API Progreso, managing Yucatán’s most important maritime trade point, Progreso port, has started two projects related to these opportunities.
The first involves increasing operational capacity at the Yucalpetén fishing port, 4km from Progreso port, so it can handle up to 3Mt of basalt stone along with the ports of Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo.
The second project involves expanding Progreso port’s commercial area with infrastructure projects to increase capacity during the next three decades with an estimated investment of 3.5bn pesos, according to SCT.
Works include a 5,500m3 commercial zone for tourism, adding 60ha to the cargo area through dredging and filling, and expanding the maneuvering space for ships from 450m to 600m.
Progreso port has seven specialized oil, container, and cruise terminals and is Mexico’s biggest trade link to the Caribbean, according to the state government.
Identifying the opportunities follows transport and communications minister Jorge Arganis Díaz Leal’s visit to the state and the recent incorporation of the maritime commerce coordination entity into the portfolio of ports minister Rosa Icela Rodríguez.

NEW PLANS
The federal government opened the country’s first sea road on July 1, connecting the ports of Progreso, Veracruz and Tampico (Nayarit state) and Guatemala’s Santo Tomás de Castilla port, according to the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s second government report.
SCT modified the three Mexican ports’ master infrastructure plans, possibly leading to the new business opportunities.
The government also authorized operators to charge maximum fees for infrastructure use, the government report said.
