The construction of Balears Wharf at the Port of Tarragona is 40% complete and the Mar del Aneto floating dock has fulfilled its function, following the launch and placement of the eleventh and final caisson from near Catalunya Wharf.
The process took three months to complete, and involved a workforce of up to 60 people and more than three million kilos of steel. Tugs, boatmen and mooring services assisted in the operation, described as having ‘gone smoothly’ by Carles Segura, director, infrastructures and conservation, Port of Tarragona, with one caisson laid weekly.
Welcoming cruise ships
Balears Wharf, which is expected to begin operating in mid-2021, will have a surface area of four hectares and 700 mtr. It will facilitate even the largest cruise ships and enable several vessels to dock simultaneously, so says the Port.
