Oct. 24, 2020 — The Port of Siuslaw Board of Commissioners met on Oct. 21 for its regular meeting. The most significant agenda item was the selection of an individual to fill the current vacancy on the commission.
In addition, Commissioner Craig Zolezzi’s suggestion last month to upgrade the video capabilities of the port, to allow for face to face communications, has been acted upon and all commissioners were visible at this month’s meeting.
Three candidates were under consideration for the open position, which was vacated by Craig Brandt in August: Ron Caputo, Robert Ward and Doug Barrett. The Port determined that all three applicants were qualified for the Position 2 opening.
“These are tough choices,” Zolezzi said before the vote. “Personally, I don’t know any of the candidates, but I do know that the commissioners that are currently serving work well together. I’d like to make sure whomever we bring into that fold is able to work well with us. Collectively, we have a pretty good mix and that’s important to me.”
There was little discussion of the candidates, as the qualifications and experience of the three was distributed and discussed at last month’s meeting, then tabled to allow for further consideration by commissioners.
The motion to nominate Robert Ward was made by Commissioner Bill Meyer, followed by commissioner approval. However, there was a sole dissenting vote from Zolezzi.
The choice was lauded by Meyer, who is familiar with Ward, and feels he will be a good addition to the port commission.
“I’m totally confident, working with Rob over the years and seeing the way he deals with situations and individual, he will be a good fit with the commission,” Meyer said.
After Ward’s selection, Port Manager David Huntington administered the Oath of Office and Ward began his tenure as a Port of Siuslaw Commissioner.
One of the issues that has been part of commission discussions over the past few years is a 40-acre, commercially-zoned plot of land at the Pacific View Industrial Park, which is for sale. Unfortunately, the market for this type of property has been limited and commissioners are exploring options to market and sell the land. There is currently no active real estate agent selling the property.
In an attempt to spur interest in the industrial property, Chairman Terry Duman introduced Rob Quandt, an experienced drone pilot, that has been photographing and videotaping properties in order to assist property owners in selling their land.
Quandt was on hand to make an initial presentation to the commission.
While commissioners were interested in pursuing the possibility of working with him, they felt the need to retain an agent of record before moving forward with an agreement.
Huntington, after pointing out the need to hire an agent of record, mentioned another opportunity to promote the Port of Siuslaw.
“We do belong to the South Coast Development Council, and they have offered to promote it for us,” he said. “What they do is try to track living-wage jobs and bring industry to the area. They are planning on doing some drone footage for us and some other properties in the Florence area.”
Commissioners agreed to move forward with retaining an agent to oversee the sale of the Pacific View property, while maintaining contact with drone operator Quandt.
Reports from staff showed there continues to be a high use rate at the Port Campground of 84 percent, with moorage at 63 percent capacity for the month of September. Checks were printed and distributed in the amount of $42,476.
