Local hip-hop artist Kade Trammell was up next at DD Sky Club's open mic night on Tuesday when he heard seven to 10 gunshots ring out from the back of the packed club.
Trammell, 20, and his two friends dropped to the floor. When he stood up, he saw bodies.
"We got really scared, we ran for our ... lives," he said. "Everybody starting running for their lives after the gunshots."
Three people were killed and one was wounded around 9:45 p.m. when at least two gunmen opened fire at the Midtown club, Houston police said. The victims had not been identified by Wednesday morning. The gunmen remained at large and no description was available.
Trammell, who performs under the name 07 finesse, has been attending Tuesday night open mic shows for more than a year and performed last week. DD Sky Club is a new venue for the mic night, he said.
On Tuesday, the club was mostly packed with the regular crowd of local rap artists, Trammell said. But he saw a few faces he did not recognize, including a new DJ.
Trammell said he left the club on the verge of a panic attack, crying and barely able to talk.
"We got so scared we ran out the club and we tried leaving as fast as we could," he said. "We did not want to die."
