Port of Tarragona
The Balears Wharf will double the number of cruise ships that can dock at the Port of Tarragona
Port of Tarragona has finished building the first connection between the southern breakwater and the caissons of the new Balears Wharf..
The connection will allow resources to reach the caissons from land. A second link from the northern breakwater is currently being built to enclose the wharf from both sides. Builders will use heavy machinery for this phase of the construction project, with material being transported by road from the El Llorito and Blanco quarries. The 11 foundations will be filled with concrete by lorry, while an extrados with a stone landfill is being built on the rear. A dredger is also filling the caissons from the sea, giving them the necessary weight for any future developments.
The Balears Wharf will increase Tarragona’s capacity to receive cruise guests, doubling the number of cruise ships that can dock simultaneously. The port is also currently studying the possibility of providing shore power connections to vessels docked at the wharf to reduce pollution and fuel use.
