NEW FAIRFIELD — A local woman is facing charges after police say she crashed an SUV down an embankment Tuesday evening and left the scene.
The crash happened on Shortwoods Road around 9:30 p.m., when a 55-year-old New Fairfield woman was heading south in a 2015 Ford Escape and failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway.
Police said the SUV went down an embankment off the right hand shoulder and got stuck between two trees.
“The operator evaded the scene of the incident and was driven home by a family member prior to (police) arrival,” according to a state police accident information summary.
Police later found the woman at her home — less than a mile from the accident scene — and charged her with evading responsibility, failure to maintain lanes and traveling too fast for conditions.
The SUV was towed from the scene with disabling damage and the driver is scheduled to appear at state Superior Court in Danbury on Dec. 1.
