A Mount Prospect police officer was hospitalized Sunday after he was struck by a passing motorist while on the scene of a separate crash.
According to police, at 6:46 a.m., an officer in a fully marked police SUV with its emergency lights activated was blocking the eastbound lanes of Algonquin Road near Dempster Street while a traffic crash that had occurred earlier was being cleaned up.
At that time, police said a red Kia Sedona was traveling eastbound Algonquin when it struck the police SUV on the passenger side. The officer was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The driver, Hedelberto Garcia, 72, of the 1100 block of E. Algonquin, Arlington Heights, reportedly told police he was not able to see the police SUV due to the angle of the sun, which made it difficult to see.
Garcia, who was uninjured, was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The officer was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and released. The roadway was closed for approximately 40 minutes for the crash investigation and the police vehicle was towed from the scene.
