The Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene of a hi-rise fire early Friday morning in Tamaqua.
The coroner’s office, which only responds to deaths, couldn’t immediately provide more details about the incident other than confirming its presence.
The fire was reported at 6:16 a.m. in the 16-story structure at 222 E. Broad St., a county dispatcher confirmed.
There were a few injuries, including one person who was flown to an area hospital, the dispatcher said. A landing zone was set up at the high school, dispatches said.
Firefighters rescued several people, WFMZ Channel 69 News reported. Residents on lower floors sheltered in place, the television station reported on its website.
The fire on the sixteenth floor was reported knocked down about 6:50 a.m. and out a short time later, dispatches said.
The 117-unit building was refurbished in 2017, according to the Alliance for Building Communities Inc. which owns and manages the property.
Lehigh County dispatched ambulances to assist, but they were almost immediately recalled, a dispatch supervisor said.
