New digital portal helps track cargo in real time for Port of Long Beach stakeholders - Long Beach Press Telegram

Surging cargo movement and the digital revolution have led shipping ports to move quickly in recent years to online “dashboards” that track ships and other cargo movers in real time.

The most recent entry is the WAVE — Weekly Advance Volume Estimate — report at the Port of Long Beach.

The portal is designed to keep trucking companies, chassis providers and other stakeholders on top of the goods movement and vessel calls that continue multiplying.

“Ports throughout the nation are moving toward a digital transformation and, in a word, visibility,” said Mario Cordero, executive director of the Port of Long Beach.

At the neighboring Port of Los Angeles, the Port Optimizer keeps tabs on cargo movements in a similar way.

“In the nation’s largest port complex,” Cordero said, “it is absolutely paramount that we have reliability, visibility and predictability of cargo movements.”

The portal is updated each Monday on the port’s website — polb.com — and the weekly report provides information on vessel calls several weeks ahead, cargo container volume and estimates of traffic to come.

The crunch has been especially felt in recent months as cargo volumes have surged at both parts, leading to some delays in getting containers unloaded and ready to move out to warehouses and retail destinations.

Unscheduled vessels arriving at the port, making up for a slew of cancelations earlier in 2020, has also added stress to the supply chain, Cordero said. Out of the 94 vessels that arrived at the port in October 18 were unscheduled; 17 out of the 87 vessels in November were also unscheduled.

“We’re working with our container operations,” Cordero said, “to make sure we maximize the movement of cargo.”

Among other measures taken at the port has been setting aside 40 acres for the STOR  Yard — Short Term Overflow Resource Yard — at Pier S to help streamline and facilitate cargo movements.

“It’s proven to be very beneficial to the (supply chain) stress we’re seeing,” Cordero said, describing it as a staging area for loaded and empty containers.
