As an American with Mexican and African roots, Ebony Bailey identifies as “Blaxican.”

Bailey is a filmmaker currently living in Mexico City, where she says her Black skin often brings unwanted attention.

"On one hand, it is jarring when people point and ask me to touch my hair," she said. "But on the other hand, I'm just so used to it, because I've always been used to being different and being the only Black person here."

Bailey made a film about the growing number of Black migrants in Tijuana called “Life Between Borders."

In a new episode of KPBS' border podcast "Port of Entry," Bailey talks about that film and her other work focusing on the mixing of cultures and the beauty that often comes from it.

Bailey is featured as part of “Border Voices,” a series of shorter episodes spotlighting people who identify as transborder, fronterizx or simply have an interesting relationship with the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Port of Entry” will be back with a new season of cross-border stories soon.

FEATURED PODCAST

Border people often inhabit this in-between place. From KPBS and PRX, “Port of Entry” tells personal stories from this place — stories of love, hope, struggle and survival from border crossers, fronterizxs and other people whose lives are shaped by the wall.
