The Port of Long Beach broke another cargo record in November, the fourth straight month it has done so.
The numbers are attributed to retailers making a final push for holiday goods and ordering personal protective equipment in the ongoing response to the resurgent coronavirus outbreak.
The port reported 783,523 20-foot equivalent units — the standard measurement used, known as TEUs — of container cargo in November. That was a 30.6% jump over November 2019.
Imports were up 30.5% — to 382,677 TEUs — and exports were down 5.2%, or 117,283 TEUs.
Empty containers that were shipped back overseas rose 55%, to 283,563 TEUs.
The pandemic’s stay-at-home orders have driving online shopping and the COVID-19 surge also has led to rising purchases of PPEs.
Cargo numbers in both the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have broken records in the latter part of 2020. That was in contrast to the year’s earlier slowdown of cargo first sparked by factory shutdowns in China and then America.
While the overall economic outlook remains uncertain, said Mario Cordero, executive director of the Port of Long Beach, dockworkers were moving “an incredible amount of cargo during the last half of 2020.”
The uptick in cargo has led at times to an overflow of containers at both ports along with reports of congestion and some delays.
“We’re dealing with the surge in containers by partnering with stakeholders, utilizing a temporary storage yard and prioritizing dual transaction truck trips that balance in-bound and out-bound cargo flows,” Cordero said.
This marks the end of what has usually been the peak shipping season in which retailers prepare for the holidays and an increase in online spending.
The Port of Long Beach had 87 container ship calls in November, with 17 of those being unscheduled vessels that made up for voyages canceled earlier in the year.
The port has moved 7.3 million TEUs during the first 11 months of the year, 4.7% up from the same period in 2019.
November cargo numbers for the Port of Los Angeles will be released on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
