A Middleborough man was arraigned Friday morning on charges that he fatally stabbed his parents at their home and he was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Ryan C. True, 21, was arraigned on two counts of murder in Wareham District Court. He pleaded not guilty and, after undergoing a mental health evaluation by the court’s clinician, was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for further evaluation.
The bodies of Renee True, 55, and David True, 52, were found Thursday morning inside their home at 3 Highland St.
Prosecutors said True lived with his parents at the home. Police had responded to the address around 6:30 a.m. Thursday to check on the well-being of David True, who hadn’t shown up for work.
When police and firefighters gained access to the home, they encountered a “brutal and very bloody scene,” prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said the body of David True was discovered under a comforter in an office on the first floor, and the body of Renee True found under a comforter on the floor of an upstairs bedroom.
True’s half-brother, Douglas Hughes III, told police, according to prosecutors, that True had called him and said “something bad happened” to their parents and that he was the only one who left the house alive. Hughes told police that he and True have the same mother.
According to a police report filed in court, True told his half-brother that on Wednesday evening he was playing video games when his father, who was drunk, and came into his room to harass him. True said he “had enough and did what he had to do,” according to the report, and that he understood if Hughes “would not forgive him.”
After finding the bodies Thursday morning, police called True, who was a couple streets away in his mother’s Kia Sorento, and asked him to meet officers at the home.
True agreed, and police instructed him to stop at the beginning of Highland Street and put his hands up, which he did, and he was placed under arrest. Police said True had bandages on one hand and what appeared to be bloodstains on his clothing, and a knife in his pants pocket. Police also found gloves, a roll of black duct tape, a flashlight, and two large suitcases in the car.
True later consented to an interview and told police that at around 5 p.m. Wednesday he and his father got into an altercation. He pulled out a knife and stabbed his father multiple times, he told police. True told police that a short time later his mother entered the house and he stabbed her. He left the home Thursday morning in his mother’s Kia, the police report stated.
Hughes told police that True had been diagnosed with autism as a child and that his mother and stepfather “were having a tough time with him,” according to the police report. Hughes also said True was “in denial of his mental health issues and refused to take medication,” the report stated.
True told police that he graduated from Pilgrim Academy in Plymouth in 2018. On its website Pilgrim Academy is described as a “small, structured, therapeutic school for students in grades 5-12 experiencing significant social, emotional and/or behavioral difficulties.”
According to town assessor records, the single-family Cape-style home at 3 Highland St. was purchased by David and Renee True in 2002.
David True was employed by MCE Dirtworks Inc., a paving and excavation company based in Easton, the company said on Facebook.
“David True was truly one of the best men we have had the privilege of knowing. His charisma and passion for his work were contagious; a true leader,” a company statement said. “He will be sorely missed by all of us here and by anyone lucky enough to call him their friend.”
Renee True was a school bus driver for the town. The Middleborough Public Schools minivan bus assigned to her was in the driveway when police arrived on Thursday, according to prosecutors.
