President Donald Trump won our state in landslides each time he was on the national ballot. He has consistently enjoyed strong polling here.
Yet there is evidence, both here and nationally, that the Trump coalition is crumbling.
For evidence, look no further than the fact that North Dakota's entire congressional delegation — Rep. Kelly Armstrong first, followed by Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer — has announced they're voting to confirm the election of Joe Biden as America's 46th President.
They are not voting to back the conspiracy-addled and wholly unconstitutional effort, led by Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri, to undermine some of the non-Trump votes cast by states in the Electoral College.
It's the right decision.
The delegation is now getting slammed by the fringe cranks of both parties. Trump loyalists are attacking anyone who dares to question Dear Leader these days, and many of them seem to think Trumpists have the juice to defeat these men in their next elections.
They're delusional.
Meanwhile, certain left-wing loudmouths are nitpicking the move because let's face it, those demagogues aren't ever going to give a Republican credit for anything.
So it goes.
Setting aside for a moment the good news that the Cruz/Hawley effort will go down in deserving flames, let's consider the political implications. Trump's star has fallen in the last six months. His endless braying on Twitter, his increasingly bizarre behavior and willingness to associate himself with whoever will tell him what he wants to hear, even if it means imbeciles like Sidney Powell and Lin Wood, has cost him.
There's been much talk about what Trump's influence over politics will be once he leaves office. Earlier this year, it would have been reasonable to conclude that it would be significant. These days, it's clear that most Republicans are eager to see him go.
What better bellwether for this than the fact that the delegation representing North Dakota — again one of the Trumpiest of Trump states — turning their backs on Trump's efforts to keep himself in the White House.
To be clear, all three members of the delegation are still touting themselves as Trump supporters. They likely will for some time to come.
Actions speak louder than words. Our delegation decided that enough was enough. With Trump increasingly seeming like a deluded captain screaming at clouds as his ship slips underwater, it was about time.
