An online tool initiated by the Port of Los Angeles to help stakeholders keep track of cargo movements in real time has received the “Gamechanger” award from the American Society of Civil Engineers.
That group recognizes infrastructure modernization projects throughout the United States.
The Port Optimizer, a digital portal providing real-time, data-driven information, recently received the honor for improving the performance and predictability of the supply chain.
“The efficiency of our nation’s ports is essential for delivering goods in a timely manner and keeping the economy moving,” said Jean-Louis Briaud, ASCE president, in a written news release. “While many of our efforts to prevent backlogs at these facilities (are) focused on dredging and the design of intermodal connectors, software can play a major role in keeping track of containers.”
The Port Optimizer was developed in partnership with Wabtec Corp. and is a cloud-based information portal. It digitizes maritime shipping data for cargo owners and supply chain stakeholders.
“Harnessing the power of data to improve cargo efficiency continues to be a priority for the Port of Los Angeles,” said port Executive Director Gene Seroka, “and our Port Optimizer is at the center of that effort.”
The ASCE designates an infrastructure project as a “Gamechanger” for several reasons, including innovative technologies, unique funding breakthroughs and planning methods.
Operating under the Port Optimizer banner on the port’s website — portoflosangeles.org — are apps that provide real-time data on inbound cargo, truck turn times and empty container returns.
