The Port of Los Angeles will hold a virtual meeting this week to provide an update on its Clean Truck Program.
Officials will go over the process for choosing concession agreements with trucking companies. The port currently has concession agreements with about 1,100 “Licensed Motor Carriers.” Those agreements must be replaced before they expire on Sept. 30.
All LMCs making regular calls at the port’s container terminals must have a pending or approved concession agreement with the Port of Los Angeles. The Port of Long Beach has a separately administered motor carrier registration program.
The Clean Truck Program was established in 2008 as part of the twin ports’ Clean Air Action Plan. Currently, the goal is to transition all harbor-serving trucks to zero emissions by 2035. There are challenges facing the ports, however: Electric trucks cost much more than diesel trucks, for example, rely on available battery supplies and charging stations, and need a long enough range for trips.
At the meeting, the Port of Los Angeles’ Environmental Management staff will provide program background and information about developing the next round of the port’s Concession Agreement policy.
The meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, via Zoom. It will include an open discussion and an opportunity for folks to ask questions.
