Savannah Port Terminal Railroad (SAPT), a Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) subsidiary, will now serve the Mason Mega Rail Terminal, broadening its long-term rail services agreement with the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA).
SAPT has provided rail services to the Port of Savannah for 23 years. Those include rail intermodal and merchandise service, railcar switching and yardmaster services, and interchange with CSX and Norfolk Southern (NS), as well as track inspection and maintenance.
With the new Mason Mega Rail Terminal service, SAPT will add 15 track-miles to its operations, currently running over 18 track-miles inside the Port. The terminal, slated for completion later this year, “will have the ability to build and receive six 10,000-foot trains simultaneously and cut transit times to the Midwest by 24 hours,” according to G&W.
The expanded agreement with GPA “is especially significant as rail container capacity at the Port, which already has the country’s largest and fastest-growing container terminal, is expected to double to 2 million TEUs (20-foot-equivalent container units) per year with the completion of the Mason Mega Rail project,” the short line holding company reported.
“We are confident in the ability of Genesee & Wyoming’s SAPT railroad to consistently provide the safe, efficient rail services needed to match our growth trajectory,” GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch said. “With the near completion of Garden City Terminal’s Mason Mega Rail project, intermodal trade via the Port of Savannah is expected to play an increasing role in our business.”
