‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’: New post-credit scene, explained - Deseret News

Warning: This article includes minor spoilers for the fifth episode of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

Make sure you stay past the credits for Episode 5 of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” — there’s a pretty important scene waiting for you.

Episode 5 of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” — called “Truth” — ends on a pretty monumental note. Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) trains himself on how to use the Captain America shield, which he took back from John Walker (Wyatt Russell), who had used the shield to kill someone in Episode 4.

Wilson trains with the shield out in his lawn, learning how to throw it, catch it and do fancy fighting moves with it. All signs point toward him adopting the shield. All of this is underlined when he opens a briefcase and stares down at it before the episode cuts to black. We’re not shown what’s in the briefcase, but I would suspect it’s a new Captain America suit for Wilson.

Anyway, the credits roll until we see Walker again. And he seems to be building a shield of his own. He’s throwing together scraps of metal in the shape of a shield. And he adds the stars of himself and his fallen friend, Lamar, onto the shield.

What the ending scene means

This is a clear sign that Walker isn’t going away quietly. Walker assumed the role of Captain America and embraced it to his full extent since he held the shield. During this latest episode, Walker seemed obsessed with getting the shield back and becoming Captain America again.

So what does this mean for Walker? It appears he will be fully embracing his role as U.S. Agent — a name for the character who appeared in the comic books. U.S. Agent performed a number of government missions in the Marvel comics.

However, Walker identified as U.S. Agent while working for the Avengers in the comics. So he was a good guy. But Walker seems to be a villain at this point in the show, which suggests he might be assuming the identity of Super-Patriot instead.

Who is Super-Patriot?

The role of Super-Patriot might make more sense for Walker at this point in the show. Per Marvel’s fan database, Walker’s Super-Patriot had a lot of negative feelings against Captain America.

“He became the Super-Patriot, arguing that he stood for America’s ‘true ideals’ and began to publicly discredit Captain America. Three ‘Bold Urban Commandos’, fellow recruits from the Federation, assisted him by staging attacks and intimidating others..

“After a fight with Captain America at a rally in Central Park, Walker killed a terrorist named Warhead who threatened to detonate a nuclear weapon in Washington, D.C.”

It makes more sense that Walker would become the Super-Patriot since the finale seems to be setting up a confrontation between Sam, Bucky and the Flag Smashers (a villainous rebellion group) in New York City. There’s a good chance we’d see Sam as Captain America face off with John Walker as Super-Patriot in Central Park.

No matter what happens, it looks like we’re being set up for a final confrontation between Walker and Wilson — all for the sake of the Captain America shield.
