ALBERT LEA — Cleanup of a Saturday train derailment continued Sunday near Goose Lake in Albert Lea.
About 20 cars of a Union Pacific train with about 50 cars went off the track Saturday afternoon. Officials confirmed Saturday that some of the cars were leaking hydrochloric acid.
The Rochester Fire Department was called to the scene to assist with special equipment for hazardous materials.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office contacted the Rochester Fire Department to assist at the site of the crash. RFD’s Chemical Assessment Team unit responded from Fire Station 4. They conducted atmospheric and environmental monitoring to help other authorities on the scene respond and made recommendations on any risks to the public from chemical plumes.
RFD crews were done at the scene and back at their respective stations by 9 p.m.
