Multiple fire agencies along with the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office are on-scene at an oil well fire in Bennett that could potentially blow at any minute.
Officials have established a one mile perimeter from fire at an oil site operated by Crestone Peak Resource in the 3400 block of East Quincy Avenue in Watkins.
Quincy Avenue is closed at Watkins Road, while Watkins Road is also closed three miles north of Quincy Avenue.
Crews from Bennet-Watkins Fire, South Metro Fire Rescue, Wildland Fire Team, Hazmat and the sheriff's office bomb squad are currently on standby as the situation is too dangerous to attack the blaze, said Ginger Delgado, a public information officer for the sheriff's office.
"(Crews) are monitoring it very closely, but at this point, but this fire could blow up at any time," Delgado said during an afternoon media briefing.
First responders responded to a report of a fire at the oil well about 1:45 p.m. and smoke could be seen from much of the south and eastern metro.
Jason Oates, vice president of government affairs and public relations for Crystal and Peak Resources said it is unclear what caused the fire, but the 45 or 46 people on-scene at its ignition evacuated safely.
"When they identified this was a hazard and this incident started, all the training and things we do every day to be prepared for these unplanned circumstances kicked in," Oates said.
An investigation into the incident will be performed and should reveal what caused the incident, Oates said.
Operations at the site will be shut down indefinitely even after the fire is put out to assure everything on the site is in proper working conditions.
Authorities are urging people to stay away from the area.
