The Port of Los Angeles recently became the first Western Hemisphere port to process 10 million containers in a 12‑month period.
When the port closes its 2020-21 fiscal year on June 30, it expects to have processed more than 10.8 million 20-foot equivalent units in the timespan. A pandemic-induced consumer buying surge that began last summer, along with the restocking of retailer shelves and e-commerce warehouses across the country, have fueled a rapid rise in imports, port officials said in a news release.
Over the past 12 months, port terminals have worked an average of 15 container ships each day, up from a pre-pandemic average of 10 ships per day.
Meanwhile, the port plans to hold a virtual public meeting today to seek comments on a revised draft environmental impact report for the Southern California International Gateway (SCIG) project. On May 19, the port released the draft report for a 45-day period of public review and comment, which ends July 9.
The SCIG is a proposed BNSF Railway Co. intermodal facility that's designed to help eliminate truck trips from area freeways and provide environmental benefits. It would be located on an existing industrial site within four miles of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, with direct access to the Alameda Corridor.
